In this letter we introduce two space-time transmission schemes which allow full-rate and full-diversity noncoherent communications using two transmit antennas over fading frequency-selective channels. The first scheme operates in the frequency domain where it combines differential Alamouti space-time block-coding (STBC) with OFDM. The second scheme operates in the time domain and employs differential time-reversal STBC to guarantee blind channel identifiability without the need for temporal oversampling or multiple receive antennas.

In this paper, a Decode and Forward (DF) cooperative communication scheme, achieving full rate, is introduced. The scheme uses Minimum-Decoding complexity Quasi-Orthogonal space-time Block Code (MDC-QOSTBC), which uses a non-linear transmitter to obtain a linear decoding complexity at the receiver side. The transmitter has four transmitting antennas and the receiver uses more than four antennas to achieve a better performance. This technique acquires a differential full-diversity and linear complexity of the system in the first-hop. The channel used is a partiallycoherent relay channel (pCRC), where the first-hop is non-coherent and the second-hop is coherent. In the second hop, Generalized Selection Combining (GSC) technique is used to select and combine part of these relays. The relay nodes selection decision is based on instantaneous signal to noise ratio (ISNR).

LDPC based time-frequency double differential space-time coding for multi-antenna OFDM systems

differential space-time coding was proposed recently in the literature for multi-antenna systems, where neither the transmitter nor the receiver knows the fading coefficients. Among existing schemes, double differential space-time (DDST) coding is of special interest because it is applicable to continuous fast time-varying channels. However, it is less effective in fre- quency-selective fading channels. This paper’s authors derived a novel time-frequency double differential space-time (TF-DDST) coding scheme for multi-antenna orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in a time-varying fre- quency-selective fading environment, where double differential space-time coding is introduced into both time domain and fre- quency domain. Our proposed TF-DDST-OFDM system has a low-complexity non-coherent decoding scheme and is robust for time- and frequency-selective Rayleigh fading. In this paper, we also propose the use of state-of-the-art low-density parity-check (LDPC) code in serial concatenation with our TF-DDST scheme as a channel code. Simulations revealed that the LDPC based TF-DDST OFDM system has low decoding complexity and relatively better performance.

Cyclic algebras for noncoherent differential space-time coding

We investigate cyclic algebras for coding over the differential noncoherent channel. Cyclic algebras are an algebraic object that became popular for coherent space-time coding, since it naturally yields linear families of matrices with full diversity. coding for the differential noncoherent channel has a similar flavor in the sense that it asks for matrices that achieve full diversity, except that these matrices furthermore have to be unitary. In this work, we give a systematic way to find infinitely many unitary matrices inside cyclic algebras, which holds for all dimensions. We show how cyclic algebras generalize previous families of unitary matrices obtained using the representation of fixed-point-free groups. As an application of our technique, we present families of codes for three and four antennas that achieve high coding gain. In our transmission scheme, the relays do not waste power to transmit known information. This is achieved by combining the symbol vectors of both terminals at the relays into a single symbol vector without decoding the information symbols. Furthermore, in our scheme, the direct link between the communicating terminals can be easily incorporated to further improve the diversity gain. Simulations show a substantially improved performance in terms of bit error rate (BER) of the proposed technique as compared to the known techniques.

Bound-intersection detection for multiple-symbol differential unitary space-time modulation

This paper considers multiple-symbol differential detection (MSD) of differential unitary space-time modulation (DUSTM) over multiple-antenna systems. We derive a novel exact maximum-likelihood (ML) detector, called the bound-intersection detector (BID), using the extended Euclidean algorithm for single-symbol detection of diagonal constellations. While the ML search complexity is exponential in the number of transmit antennas and the data rate, our algorithm, particularly in high signal-to-noise ratio, achieves significant computational savings over the naive ML algorithm and the previous detector based on lattice reduction. We also develop four BID variants for MSD. The first two are ML and use branch-and-bound,the third one is suboptimal, which first uses BID to generate a candidate subset and then exhaustively searches over the reduced space, and the last one generalizes decision-feedback differential detection. Simulation results show that the BID and its MSD variants perform nearly ML, but do so with significantly reduced complexity.

Non-coherent distributed space-time coding techniques for two-way wireless relay networks

To overcome the overhead involved with channel estimation, several non-coherent distributed space-time coding (DSTC) strategies for two-way wireless relay networks (TWRNs) using the amplify-and-forward and the decode-and-forward protocol have been recently proposed that do not require channel state information (CSI) at any node to decode the information symbols. In this paper, novel differential DSTC strategies for TWRNs using the two- and three-phase protocol are proposed. In our transmission schemes, the relays do not waste power to transmit information known at the respective destination nodes. This is achieved by combining the symbols from both terminals received at the relays into a single symbol of the unaltered constellation. Furthermore, in our strategies, the direct link between the communicating terminals can be naturally incorporated to further improve the diversity gain. Simulations show a substantially improved performance in terms of bit error rate (BER) of the proposed strategies as compared to the existing strategies. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Iterative decoding of differentially space-time coded multiple descriptions of images

We consider transporting images over wireless fading channels rather than the on-off channels considered in most works related to multiple description (MD) coding. The new idea is to use iterative (turbo) decoding techniques developed for serially concatenated coding systems to improve the performance of the receiver in successive decoding iterations. We treat MD coding, realized by embedded image coding plus unequal error protection (e.g., product code structure), as the outer constituent code and use a differential space-time code as the inner constituent code. Experimental results show that our iterative scheme can effectively improve the system performance. Furthermore, most of the gain in PSNR is achieved with only one iteration in the low SNR range, e.g., 0-20 dB.

By introducing a space-time coding scheme based on amicable orthogonality, we develop a distributed differential space-time coding scheme with the amplify-and-forward （AF） method for wireless cooperative networks. The scheme requires no knowledge of the channel state information at both transmitters and receivers, and effectively decreases the realization complexity due to no channel estimation. Moreover, it has lower decoding complexity and higher coding advantage than the existing scheme, thus avoiding the shortcoming of exponential decoding complexity of some existing schemes. According to the pairwise error probability （PEP） analysis of the system, the power allocations of source and relay terminals are jointly optimized, and as a result, the PEP is minimized, which will provide a helpful guideline for system design. Numerical calculation and simulation results show that the developed scheme is superior to the existing scheme. Moreover, the scheme with optimal power allocation yields obvious performance improvement over that with equal power allocation.
