Structured approach to estimate the measurement uncertainty in digital signal elaboration algorithms

The problem of uncertainty analysis in digital signal processing algorithms is discussed, proposing a method based on a 'white box' approach. A theoretical uncertainty estimation is carried out first;its results are then confirmed by both simulation and experimental tests. The characteristics of the method are highlighted by means of a practical application to some common algorithms for measurements on periodic signals.

A new generation of multipurpose measurement equipment is transforming the role of computers in instrumentation. The new features involve mixed devices, such as analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters and digital signal processing techniques, that are able to substitute typical discrete instruments like multimeters and analyzers. signal-processing applications frequently use least-squares (LS) sine-fitting algorithms. Periodic signals may be interpreted as a sum of sine waves with multiple frequencies: the Fourier series. This paper describes an algorithm that is able to fit a multiharmonic acquired signal, determining the amplitude and phase of all harmonics. Simulation and experimental results are presented.

DSP-PML algorithm for open region DNG meta-material FDTD simulations

The digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms developed for digital filters and the perfectly matched layer (PML) formulations are incorporated with the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method to model open region double-negative (DNG) meta-material electromagnetic problems. In the proposed approach, the dielectric parameters of each FDTD unit cell are interpreted as an infinite impulse response digital filter which can be implemented efficiently using the transpose direct form II. A numerical example carried out in a two-dimensional domain is included to show the validity of the proposed formulation.

Sine-fitting algorithms are very accurate methods to estimate the parameters (amplitude, phase, frequency and DC component) of a digitized sinusoidal signal. In this paper, the standardized algorithms are improved, producing a new algorithm to estimate the sinewave parameters of two acquired sine signals sharing a common frequency. This new algorithm can be used for example in impedance measurements or in the accurate frequency characterization of linear systems by measuring its input and Output and varying the input signal frequency. Nonlinear signal processing with minimization of spectral distortion for embedded systems

Numerous digital signal processing algorithms originate from the implementation of analog circuits. This approach works well in the case of linear systems. However, there are many nonlinear signal processing methods which digital implementations are accompanied by undesirable spectral distortions. There is a great need to design alias-free and computational efficient algorithms for their microprocessor implementation dedicated to industrial applications. The scope of the paper is to propose an algorithm which employs the methods of analysis and synthesis of the signals in order to minimize the spectral distortion associated with the nonlinear processing of digital signals. The paper presents also the implementation of the proposed method using an inexpensive embedded system based on the ARM Cortex-A53 processor. © 2018

To accelerate the execution of most DSP(digital signal processing) algorithms such as FFT, FIR, Vector operations, while keeping the flexibility of the chip, a reconfigurable architecture (named ReDAr) for DSP is proposed and implemented, and finally will be applied to the Radar system of Automatic Navigation Equipment. By analyzing these algorithms, the structure of Reconfigurable processing Element (RPE), the Crossbar interconnect network, the Memory organization. the host controlling strategy, and the data sequencing scheme of the architecture are conceived. and parts of them, including the RPE, Crossbar. data sequencer, are reconfigurable. After configuration. it can be interconnected into a parallel and pipelined framework. closely matching the algorithms and like a dedicated hardware. By simulation. the performances of these algorithms mapped onto this architecture are comparative to algorithm-specific chips in market, and satisfy the requirement of the targeted application.

In this paper, a fixed-point quantization noise estimator aiming at digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms is presented. The estimator enables significant reduction in the computation time required to perform complex word-length optimizations while providing a high accuracy. Affine Arithmetic (AA) is used to provide a signal-to-Quantization Noise-Ratio (SQNR) estimation for differentiable non-linear algorithms with and without feedbacks. The estimation is based on the parameterization of the statistical properties of the noise at the output of fixed-point algorithms. This parameterization allows to relate the fixed-point formats of the signals with the output noise distribution by means of fast matrix operations. Thus, a fast estimation is achieved and the word-length optimization computation time is significantly reduced. The estimator is tested using a subset of non-linear algorithms such as vector operations, power computation IIR filter, adaptive filters, and channel equalizers. The Word-length optimization computation time is boosted by three orders of magnitude while keeping the average estimation error down to 6% for most cases.
