An efficient motion vector composition algorithm for fast-forward playback in a video streaming system

Fast-forward playback enables viewers to scan through the video scene of interest efficiently. One approach to realize fast-forward playback is to employ a frame-skipping transcoder which transcodes only the frames required for playback at the desired fast speed. Various motion vector composition algorithms are used to compose the new motion vectors with reduced complexity. These algorithms do not work well for dropping a large number of frames, which is very common in fast-forward playback. In this paper, a new multiple-candidate vector selection algorithm (MCVS) is proposed to select a composed motion vector from a set of candidate motion vectors, which utilizes relevant areas in the target macroblock to ensure a reliable tracking process for motion vector composition. Experimental results show that the proposed MCVS can provide fast-forward playback through video transcoding with significant gain, in terms of rate-distortion performance, especially when a large speed-up factor is required. Developments in video compression and VLSI technologies are producing revolutionary changes in the television industry. Television signals worldwide are beginning to be compressed, encoded and transmitted using digital means. Using digital compression, encoding and transmission techniques has the advantage of better bandwidth utilization, flexibility and ease of integration with other digital data, and an overall higher quality of video at the receiver. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. Firstly, an introduction to video compression in the context of emerging digital television standards is provided. The important role played by International Standards, specifically MPEG, in the development of digital television systems is discussed. Secondly, current trends in the use of compression in the development of digital television for deployment in the United States and Europe, and the participation of Philips in these new applications, are discussed.

Altering split decisions of coding units for message embedding in HEVC

This paper proposes a novel message embedding solution based on modifying the split decisions of HEVC videos. The encoder starts by computing a mapping between the split decisions of a coding Unit (CU) and its features variables. This results in model weights that can be used to predict the split decisions. Message embedding is then carried out as a function of the predicted and true split decisions per CU. If the message bit to embed is '1' and the predicted and the true split decisions are different then the true split decision is modified to be identical to the predicted flag. Otherwise if the message bit is '0' and the predicted and the true split decisions are identical, then the true split flag is modified to become different than the predicted flag. We apply this embedding concept at two CU coding levels;32x32 and 16x16. To extract a message, the decoder starts by regenerating the model weights which are then used to predict split decisions and compare them against the true decisions received in the bit stream. Identical decisions indicate a message bit of '1' and non-identical split decisions indicate a message bit of '0'. In the experimental results we examine the prediction accuracy, the effect of the proposed solutions on message payload, the number of modified split decisions and the corresponding impact on video quality. Comparison with an existing solution reveals that the proposed solution is superior in terms in message payload whilst resulting in reduced video distortions.

Distributed video coding (DVC), now has become one of the fastest evolving coding techniques in the current signal processing world. It has its remarkable low complex yet powerful encoder which is essential for some applications in the consumer market. In this paper we propose a novel Wyner-Ziv architecture that splits a frame in to two sub frames and leave one as a Key sub frame while encoding the other as a WZ sub frame. The split key sub frame is encoded using a conventional coding scheme as in the other DVC techniques. At the decoder end the sub key frame is used to exploit the spatial and temporal correlations using an intra prediction technique and temporal motion search in order to generate the side information for the corresponding WZ sub frame. Simulation results show that over 1 dB PSNR gain can be obtained with the proposed algorithm over the results of the algorithm presented in the literature [7] at the same bit rate.

For MPEG-II and other hybrid MC/DPCM/DCT based video coding standards, it is very important to reconstruct the predicted frames based on the block motion information. In case of transmission over unreliable channels, error concealment methods are introduced to recover the lost or erroneous motion vectors. In this paper, a novel side motion estimation method is proposed to recover the lost motion vectors by selecting from a candidate motion vector set. The outer boundary of the lost block is used to perform motion estimation and the recovered motion vector is the one that minimises the squared error of the block boundary pixels between two consecutive frames. The method takes advantage of the same motion direction of most blocks and their boundaries. It releases the boundary pixel gray level continuity assumption of traditional boundary match/side match approaches so that better estimation result can be achieved. Overlapped block motion compensation is also incorporated in the proposed method to reduce the blocking artefacts. By reducing the number of motion vectors in the candidate set, the performance of the proposed algorithm can be further improved.

We propose a consensus-based distributed voltage control (DVC), which solves the problem of reactive power sharing in autonomous meshed inverter-based microgrids with inductive power lines. Opposed to other control strategies available thus far, the DVC does guarantee reactive power sharing in steady-state while only requiring distributed communication among inverters, i.e. no central computing nor communication unit is needed. Moreover, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for local exponential stability. In addition, the performance of the proposed control is compared to the usual voltage droop control [1] in a simulation example based on the CIGRE benchmark medium voltage distribution network.

This paper proposes the use of wavelet image transformation and polyphase downsampling in scalable video coding. A wavelet-based inter-frame coding solution using the syntax and framework of both MPEG-4 H.264/AVC and it is scalable extension, SVC. In the former codec, redundant slices are employed for coding the high frequency subbands of wavelet transformed imaged. While in the latter codec, the wavelet subbands are arranged into separate Coarse Grain Scalability (CGS) layers. Additionally, the paper proposes the use of a modified polyphase downsampling in applications of scalability and error resiliency. It is shown that the coding efficiency of the proposed solutions is comparable to single layer coding.

Single view distributed video coding (DVC) is a coding method that allows for the computational complexity of the system to be shifted from the encoder to the decoder. This property promotes the use of DVC in systems where processing power or energy use at the encoder is constrained. Examples include wireless devices and surveillance. This paper extends on a previously proposed multi-hypothesis non-binary LDPC coded system by introducing an additional motion extrapolated hypothesis at the decoder. By combining interpolation and extrapolation in the side information creation process, the decoder is given access to more information. The use of extrapolation specifically improves the performance of the system over larger GOP sizes.
