To satisfy the demand for communication capacity, the Mode Division Multiplexing (MDM) technique has been proposed as an emerging and promising technique. Silicon-based MDM system has attracted more attention due to the high contrast refractive index between silicon and silica. We have proposed a mode converter, which is significant to the MDM system. The direct binary search (DBS) algorithm and 3D full-vectorial finite difference time domain (3D-FV-FDTD) have been used to optimize the proposed mode converter. We have also fabricated the proposed mode converter with a compact footprint of 4.1 x 1.7 mu m(2). The measured insertion loss and crosstalk have been 0.43 dB and -15.97 dB at the working wavelength of 1550 nm, respectively. Meanwhile, the insertion loss and crosstalk of the fabricated mode converter have been lower than 2.27 dB and -13.28 dB with a broad bandwidth of 130 nm, respectively.

In this paper, we design a near-infrared 3D multifunctional metamaterial (3MM) to achieve several different functions based on modified direct binary search (DB S) algorithm. In order to demonstrate the versatility of 3MM, an optical absorber is obtained based on the inverse design technology. Besides, we also utilize it to achieve plasmon induced transparency (PIT) like effect. Finally, to prove the advantages of 3MM, we have designed the corresponding 2D metamaterial to realize the same functions based on the DBS algorithm for comparison. The comparison results show that the performance of 3MM is much better than the 2D metamaterial. Compared with previous works, our proposed 3MM not only demonstrates the advantages of 3D metamaterials in manipulating the absorption spectrums and PIT-like effects but also provides a general framework for other spectrum-related functions in various field, such as imaging, sensor, chemical analysis and so on.

Ultra-Compact Silicon-Based 1x8 Power Splitter Based on Digital Metamaterials

We present the design and experimental verification of an ultra-compact 1x8 power splitter utilizing digital metamaterials. Our splitter leverages the direct binary search algorithm to optimize the pixelated design space, ensuring symmetric and efficient power distribution across the eight output waveguides. This design achieves a notably small footprint, low insertion loss, and excellent uniformity performance at the communication wavelength of 1550 nm. To validate our approach, we fabricated a 1x8 power splitter on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform, featuring ultra-compact length and space of just 5.33 mu m and 56.12 mu m(2) respectively. This size represents a reduction of 1-2 orders of magnitude compared to previously reported values. Experimental results reveal an impressive insertion loss of 0.66 dB and a good uniformity of 0.42 dB at the center wavelength. Furthermore, the total loss remains below 1 dB across a wavelength range spanning from 1542.2 nm to 1553.5 nm. When compared to existing solutions, our designed splitter demonstrates superior performance in terms of size, insertion loss and uniformity. These attributes make this high-performance 1x8 power splitter a promising candidate for applications in large-scale on-chip optical networks and optical phased arrays.

direct-binary search method has been used for converting complex holograms into binary format. However, this algorithm is optimized to reconstruct monochromatic digital holograms and is accurate only in a narrow-depth range. In this paper, we proposed an advanced direct-binary search method to increase the depth of field of 3D scenes reconstructed in RGB by binary holograms.

Optical correlator-neural networks hybrid system for automatic angle measurement of two-dimensional objects

A new interpolation algorithm is proposed and demonstrated to perform automatic angle measurement of two-dimensional (2D) objects. The proposed algorithm works in conjunction with optical correlator neural network hybrid architecture (OCNN). The OCNN is trained with a combined algorithm of direct binary search and error back propagation. Input of the OCNN is presented with an image whose angle of rotation is to be measured, and output from the OCNN is fed into the proposed interpolation algorithm, which finally produces the rotation angle of the input image. Results of both computer simulation and experimental set-up are presented for an English alphabetic character as a 2D object. The experimental set-up consists of a real optical correlator using two spatial light modulators for both input and frequency plane representations and a PC based model of a single layer neural network. In this paper a novel method is proposed and demonstrated for automatic rotation angle measurement of a 2D object using a hybrid architecture, consisting of a 4f optical correlator with a binary phase only multiplexed matched filter and a single layer neural network. The hybrid set-up can be considered as a two-layer perceptron-like neural network;an optical correlator is the first layer and the standard single layer neural network is the second layer. The training scheme used to train the hybrid architecture is a combination of a direct binary search algorithm, to train the optical correlator, and an Error Back Propagation algorithm, to train the neural network. The aim is to perform the major information processing by the optical correlator with a small additional processing by the neural network stage. This allows the system to be used for real-time applications as optics has the inherent ability to process information in a parallel manner at high speed. The neural network stage gives an extra dimension of freedom so that complicated tasks like automatic rotation angle measurement can be achieved. Results of both computer simulation and experimental set-up are presented for rotation angle measurement of an English alphabetic character as a 2D object. The experimental set-up consists of a real optical correlator using two spatial light modulators for both input and frequency plane representations and a PC based model of a single layer network.

Multicriteria optimality for iterative encoding of computer-generated holograms

We propose a new multicriteria method for the determination of computer-generated holograms (CGH's). For this purpose, the direct binary search (DBS) algorithm for computing CGH's has been modified to converge on a new error function that defines the optimal trade-off among different criteria. This approach allows us to control the trade-off between the amplitude error and the diffraction efficiency and to provide a rigorous figure of merit. Comparisons among different encoding methods show that the best results are obtained with a modified version of the DBS method combined with the iterative Fourier transform algorithm.
