We present an iterative chip-level time domain equalizer (TEQ) for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) downlink with code multiplexed training symbols. For heavily loaded system, the multiple access interference (MAI) may be so severe that the pilot information offered by the training symbols are badly distorted. And this results in poorly converged equalizer coefficients. The proposed approach does not only utilize the training symbols, but also all the active and passive spreading codewords for TEQ adaptation. At each iteration, improved estimates of the transmitted data symbols are acquired and together with the pilot symbols, they are used to train the TEQ weights. Consequently, the signal-to-interference and noise (SINR) ratios of the effective training symbols is increased. Simulation results show that the proposed equalizer can achieve better bit-error rate performances than the generalized minimum mean squared error equalizer

In this paper we consider the uplink transmission within a DS-CDMA system employing CP-assisted (Cyclic Prefix) block transmission techniques combined with spatial multiplexing techniques that require multiple antennas at both the transmitter and the receiver. We present an efficient frequency-domain receiver structure with iterative MUD (Multiuser Detection). The performance of the proposed receiver can be close to the single-user matched filter bound, even for fully loaded systems and/or severely time-dispersive channels.

High speed packet access is the core technology of the next generation mobile communication systems. Turbo coded hybrid ARQ (HARQ) is known as one of the promising error control techniques. For direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA), frequency-domain equalization (FDE) based on minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion can replace the well known rake combining with much improved transmission performance. However, the insertion of guard interval (GI), which is required for conventional FDE, reduces the throughput. Recently, overlap FDE that requires no GI insertion was proposed for DS-CDMA. In this paper, we propose a novel space-time coding scheme for fast time-variant direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) channels. The proposed scheme employs multi-chip differential space-time block coding (MC-DSTBC) and robustness against fast fading is further improved by low-complexity decision-feedback differential detection (DF-DD). A detailed performance analysis of MC-DSTBC with DF-DD is provided. Both analytical and simulation results show in good agreement the excellent performance of the novel design in fast time-variant channels

We describe a powerline (PL) communication system that deploys wide band impulse modulation combined with direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) to obtain a form of orthogonal modulation, and to allow for user multiplexing. Several novel frequency domain (FD) detection algorithms are proposed. They all have the capability of canceling the inter-code interference (ICI) and the multiple access interference (MAI) that is generated by the frequency selective PL channel. Practical estimation of the channel, and mitigation of impulse noise is also addressed. When channel coding is used, we also show that iterative techniques with feedback from the decoder better the channel estimation and detection performance. Simulation results prove that the scheme achieves high data rates in a PL channel in the presence of impulsive noise and MAI.

Multi-carrier direct sequence code division multiple access (MC-DS-CDMA) systems can support multi-rate services with a great deal of flexibility by dynamically changing time-and frequency-domain spreading gains. However, in a frequency-selective fading channel, the multi-rate users using the time spreading codes with an ancestor-to-child relation, even with orthogonal frequency spreading codes, may still be affected by different quantities of multiple access interference (MAI). How to design an effective radio resource management strategy for the MC-DS-CDMA systems subject to different levels of MAIs becomes a new and important issue. In this paper, based on the error rate analysis in the physical layer, we observe and define a new performance metric, called the MAI coefficient, which can quantitatively predict the MAI effect imposed on a particular code in a multi-rate MC-DS-CDMA system. Furthermore, from the radio resource management perspective, we develop an interference avoidance code assignment scheme based on the MAI coefficient. By simulations and analysis, we demonstrate that the proposed interference avoidance code assignment method can effectively reduce the MAI in a multi-rate MC-DS-CDMA system, while maintaining very good call blocking rate performance.

The number of spreading sequences required for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems depends on the number of simultaneous users on the channel. The correlation properties of the sequences used affect the bit error rate of the system. Often a sequence family provides more sequences than are required and in many cases the selection of the employed sequences is a computationally intensive task. In this paper, a branch and bound algorithm is presented to optimise the subset of available sequences, given the required subset size. In contrast to previous approaches, the resulting subset is guaranteed to be optimal. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the improved performance of this algorithm over previous work

A RF receiver front-end for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) ultrawide band (UWB) wireless system is implemented in 0.18 mum CMOS technology. The receiver includes transmit-receive switch (T/R switch), a low noise amplifier (LNA) and a down-converting mixer. The front-end delivers an average power gain of 10 dB, and an IIP3 of -13 dBm at the wide bandwidth of 3 to 4.7 GHz. In the receive mode, the T/R switch exhibits an insertion loss of 1.45-2.3 dB, a 17-dBm power 1-dB compression point (P1dB), and a 26.2-20.1 dB isolation from 3 to 5 GHz. The wideband LNA achieves an average gain of 21 dB with plusmn2 dB flatness and a noise figure of 3.15-4.8 dB

This paper focuses on the channel capacity of direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) and time-hopping pulse position modulation (TH-PPM) for ultra-wide band (UWB) communication systems over multiple-access and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Based on Gaussian approximation for the multiple access interference, an expression of the signal-to-noise ratio is derived for the UWB system using 2nd derivative Gaussian pulse. The information theoretic capacity of the UWB system is expressed as a function of system parameters. Analytical and simulation results show that the capacity of DS-CDMA outperform the capacity of TH-PPM UWB system for high demand environment

In this paper we consider the use of CP-assisted (cyclic prefix) DS-CDMA schemes (direct sequence code division multiple access) in broadband wireless systems. We present an iterative, frequency-domain MUD (multiuser detection) receiver for the uplink transmission that combines IB-DFE (iterative block decision feedback equalization) principles with serial interference cancellation. It is shown that the performance proposed receiver can be close to the single-user MFB (matched filter bound), even for fully loaded systems, in severely time-dispersive channel and/or in the presence of strong interfering signals
