We describe a chip correlation MMSE receiver with multipath interference correlative timing (MICT) for downlink direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems. The receiver can be implemented easily, and analysis shows that the proposed method can obtain a chip correlation matrix that is about 50-times faster than the covariance matrix in W-CDMA systems, and the bit error rate (BER) performance of the receiver is the same as that of conventional maximum likelihood detectors (MLDs), operating under ideal conditions. Further, computer simulations showed that the BER performance maintained a good performance even in fast fading environments.

A dual mode multiuser detector is proposed. It dynamically switches its detection mode between matched filter and successive interference cancellation (SIC) detector, based on the channel characteristics. The main criterion of choosing the SIC detector is that it has minimum bit error rate (BER) among all nonlinear multiuser detectors. This detector reduces overall complexity while maintaining the same performance as the SIC detector. The switching mechanism is exploited by a performance-complexity tradeoff between the matched filter detector and SIC detector.

The European standard for 3rd generation mobile communication is wideband direct sequence code division multiple access (WCDMA), in which the same frequency spectrum is shared through all cells simultaneously, as opposed to TDMA. Thus in a WCDMA system all transmitted signals turn out to be disturbing factors to all other users in the system in the form of interference. Therefore the system capacity strongly depends on the interference level in the system. To suppress the amount of interference, fast and reliable interference controlling algorithms must be employed in next generation systems. In this paper it is shown that antenna arrays with steerable low sidelobes can reduce interference in WCDMA can increase the system capacity and array performance. Four performance metrics of array processing architectures are simulated in an interfering environment to demonstrate the advantage of low sidelobe beamforming over adaptive antennas.

This paper describes the direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) wireless transmitter design using field programmable gate array (FPGA), which has been adopted in many wireless access technologies. Four separate blocks have been designed using digital approach to form the transmitter circuit diagram using the oscillator, the PN-code generator, the parity check, and the BPSK modulator. The Synopsys software has been used for the design synthesis and simulation; the very high speed integrated circuit hardware description language (VHDL) program was used for coding and FPGA for compiling and downloading the simulation. The DS-CDMA wireless transmitter was designed to transmit with data rates up to 2 Mbps. The transmitted signals were carried with a 40 MHz carrier frequency.

In this paper, we present low-complexity adaptive frequency-domain equalization (FDK) for space-time block coding (STBC) direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) downlink system. The proposed scheme is powerful and computationally efficient, as the sophisticated matrix decomposition operations are not required in the processing and some block recursive processing, such as block least mean square (BLMS) algorithm and modified block recursive least squares (BRLS) algorithm can be easily incorporated for equalizer adaption. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of such adaptive FDE with regard to different Doppler shifts.

Compensating for near/far effects is critical for satisfactory performance of DS/CDMA systems. One solution for reducing near/far effect is multiuser detection. Various optimal and sub optimal methods have been investigated. Most of these methods, get too complex even for relatively simple system. We propose a switched mode detector which switches its detection mode between matched filter detector and successive interference cancellation (SIC) detector according to the channel conditions. This detector reduces overall complexity while maintaining the same performance as SIC detector. The switching mechanism is exploited by performance complexity tradeoff between matched filter detector and SIC detector.

This paper considers signature waveform design for downlink communications in a multicarrier direct sequence code division multiple access (MC-DS-CDMA) system. The design introduces a carefully chosen phase offset in each carrier to minimize the multiple access interference (MAI). With the proposed signature waveform design, a significant performance improvement over the existing MC-DS-CDMA systems is achieved.

This paper extends a previous work on direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) to multicarrier (MC) CDMA systems. New results on the error performance of a family of multiuser detectors for MC-CDMA are obtained using the replica method, which was originally developed in statistical physics. The central result is the "decoupling principle", namely, an MC-CDMA channel with frequency-selective fading followed by a generic multiuser detection front end can be decoupled into a bank of single-user fading channels in the large-system limit. Thus conditioned on one's fading coefficients, each user essentially experiences an equivalent single-user Gaussian channel with a degradation in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in lieu of multiaccess interference. A set of joint equations is identified that determine the degradation for each user, known as the multiuser efficiency. The result applies to arbitrary input distribution and SNRs, and to optimal multiuser detection, as well as various other suboptimal schemes.

An ant colony optimization (ACO) based multiuser detector assisted with a spatial diversity reception in direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) is proposed. This detector combines features of joint detection and collective intelligence of ants can offer almost the same bit (BER) performance as the optimum full-search-based multiuser detector does while it can greatly reduced the computational complexity. Furthermore, the near-far resistance of the ACO-based multiuser detector is also examined. The BER performance for k = 20 remains almost the same, even when the interfering users' energy is 10dB higher, than that of the desired user.

The performance of a multicarrier direct sequence code division multiple access (MC-DS-CDMA) system in the generalized Nakagami-m multipath fading channel is studied. A RAKE receiver is deployed for each subcarrier to provide path diversity with maximum ratio combining, MRC, applied. A closed form numerical integration is derived for the bit error rate, BER, system performance. Numerical results are obtained for different system parameters, e.g., the fading parameter, m, and the number of RAKE fingers. A comparison is made among different possible systems that might be employed to achieve the same number of resolvable paths for the fading channel.
