We investigate the design of complex-valued spreading sequences with respect to a combination of different correlation properties. The two classes of complex sequences considered are the Oppermann sequences, which offer a wide range of correlation properties, and the modified Walsh-Hadamard sequences, which have been shown to offer good correlation properties. Since the number of parameters for the optimization problem is large, especially for the modified Walsh-Hadamard sequences, it is difficult if not impossible to use global optimization methods for solving such problems. Thus, we propose to transform the problem with continuous variables to another problem with discrete variables. This problem can then be solved efficiently using a genetic algorithm. These types of algorithms have been successfully applied in various areas, such as neural networks; however, to the authors best knowledge, their use for the design of complex spreading sequences has been rather sparse.

In this work we investigate the performance of blind adaptive receivers for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems that employ stochastic gradient (SG) algorithms with variable step size mechanisms. Two low complexity variable step size mechanisms are proposed for constrained minimum variance (CMV) receivers that operate with SG algorithms and are also incorporated in the channel estimation algorithms. We examine the proposed adaptation techniques and compare them with recently reported approaches in frequency selective fading channels and nonstationary environments. Simulation experiments in a number of scenarios show that, although less complex, the proposed mechanisms for DS-CDMA receivers are superior to recently reported methods.

In this work we propose the blind adaptive decision feedback (DF) receivers for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems in frequency selective channels. Closed-form expressions for the design of blind DF DS-CDMA receivers are presented. Blind adaptive stochastic gradient (SG) and recursive least-squares (RLS) type algorithms are developed for use with the constrained minimum variance (CMV) and constrained constant modulus (CCM) receivers along with successive and parallel DF structures. Numerical results show significant performance gains for the proposed blind DF receivers.

We investigate a code-constrained constant modulus (CM) design criterion for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) in frequency selective channels. We propose a closed-form solution for linear receivers based on constrained optimisation techniques that combine multipath signals using multiple constraints which are treated as variables and are jointly optimised with the receiver. We develop a code-constrained constant modulus (CCM) recursive least squares (RLS) type algorithm for jointly estimating the parameters of the channel and the receiver in order to suppress multi-access and intersymbol interference. Simulation experiments are carried out for various scenarios and show that the proposed CCM-RLS algorithm outperforms previously reported methods.

We propose reduced-rank receivers based on adaptive interpolated finite impulse response (FIR) filters and adaptive interpolators for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems, and examine the novel structures in multipath fading channels. We describe the interpolated minimum mean squared error (MMSE) and the interpolated least squares (LS) for both receiver and interpolator to mitigate multiple access interference (MAI) and multiple-path propagation effects in a downlink scenario. Based on the interpolated MMSE and LS solutions, we present normalised least mean squares (NLMS) and recursive least squares (RLS) algorithms for both receiver and interpolator filters. Simulation experiments show that the proposed structures achieve a superior convergence performance to previously reported reduced-rank techniques and to the full-rank receiver.

In this paper, the novel adaptive single-user receivers with PN code tracking for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) in multipath environment are proposed. The coherent receiver estimate the desired signal and code delay to achieve code synchronization by least mean square (LMS) algorithm simultaneously. For noncoherent detection, we combine the decision-feedback differential detection with the coherent receiver to deal with the noncoherent MDPSK signals. In these two proposed schemes, an "error signal" is used to update the adaptive tap weights and the estimated code delay. Increase the number of feedback symbols can improve the performance of noncoherent receiver. Simulations confirm the good performance, including BER and timing tracking, of the proposed coherent and noncoherent receivers

Full-rate, full-diversity space-time codes can be applied in the framework of multiple-input multiple-output asynchronous direct-sequence code-division multiple access (MIMO-ACDMA) to increase the system capacity. First, the performance of these codes in this framework is investigated analytically assuming known channel fading coefficients. An upper bound on the pair-wise error probability is derived. It is shown that the determinant of an effective SINR matrix can serve as a metric to select chip waveforms. Next, different expurgated union bounds are derived to approximate the bit error rate (BER) at different SNR levels. Results show that a chip-level oversampling technique can effectively suppress the multiple-access interference (MAI) when used jointly with high-rate space-time codes.

In the mobile communication systems, many problems are raised due to the increase of the number of users. More efficient communication techniques must reflect the demand of users. The multicarrier direct sequence code division multiple access systems is an efficient method in solving both fading and interference. Thus, in this paper, we adopted the multicarrier direct sequence code division multiple access proposed by Milstein. To solve the multiple access interference efficiently, we must be able to use interference cancellation techniques. In this paper, we proposed blind interference cancellation that does not need the training sequence. The MCBMOE interference receiver is proposed to solve interference problem due to the multiuser access at MC DS-CDMA systems. The simulations show that proposed method has a good performance than the conventional methods.

Oversaturated synchronous CDMA system is proposed based on collaborative coding, where data bits of group of L + s users are jointly one-to-one mapped onto 2/sup L+s/ L-dimensional signal vectors. Instead of the unique signature per each user, the L-dimensional signature subspace is used to transmit bits of L + s users (s > 0). All signature subspaces are orthogonal to each other which simplifies the optimal receiver structure. With signal space dimension N, the number of users is K = N(1 + s/L). Preferable collaborative codes are found using the sphere packing theory for L = 2...5, s = 1, 2. Trade-off between oversaturation efficiency and energy loss/gain is evaluated against the conventional non-oversaturated orthogonal CDMA.

The interpolated constrained minimum variance (CMV) solutions for both receiver and interpolator are described for mitigating multiple access interference (MAI) and multiple-path propagation effects in a downlink scenario. Computationally efficient blind adaptive algorithms for both receiver and interpolator based upon the minimum variance (MV) performance criterion are then developed with appropriate constraints to mitigate MAI, intersymbol interference (ISI) and jointly estimate the channel.
