An adaptive minimum symbol error rate (MSER) linear multiuser detector (MUD) is proposed for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems employing multilevel pulse-amplitude modulation (M-PAM) scheme. Based on kernel density estimation for approximating the symbol error rate (SER) from training data, a least mean squares (LMS) style stochastic gradient algorithm called the least SER (LSER) is developed for training linear MUDs. Computer simulation is used to investigate the performance of this LSER MUD.

We show that because of drastic differences in the fading statistics between ultra wide bandwidth (UWB) multicarrier and direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) approaches, DS easily scales to Gbps rates while multicarrier architectures have severe difficulty. Both DS-CDMA and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDM) are well understood and proven modulation techniques in conventional (narrowband) commercial technologies (e.g. DS-CDMA in cell phones; OFDM in IEEE 802.11a/g). The maturity of these approaches, however, is vastly different when applied to ultrawideband (UWB) systems. Already implemented and operating in silicon, DS-CDMA architectures have proven to be the most mature and scaleable for UWB on both a theoretical as well as implementation basis. Among the proposed approaches before the IEEE 802.15.3a standards committee, the DS-CDMA transmitted waveform (which is the "thing" being standardized) is uniquely capable of serving the broadest diversity of applications. It can, for example, allow very low-cost low-power transmit-only devices (even at Gbps rates) because it requires no FFT or DAC or DSP. At the same time, receivers can incorporate varying degrees of DSP to provide scaleable power/cost versus performance. We present performance comparisons of DS-CDMA [Document IEEE.15-03/153r10, July 2003] vs. the proposed multiband MB-OFDM architecture [Document IEEE 802.15-03/267r0, July 2003] for outage range in a variety of multipath environments. Moreover, we describe how DS-CDMA UWB architectures can support robust and flexible multiuser capabilities, protect against in-band interference, and provide high-resolution ranging capabilities for safety-of-life applications.

In this paper, the uplink of an asynchronous direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) system with multiple antennas at both the transmitter and the receiver is considered. We analyze the system performance over a spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channel with multiple access interference (MAI). Assuming perfect channel knowledge available at the transmitter, maximal ratio transmission (MRT) is employed to weight the transmitted signal optimally in terms of combating signal fading. Further, adaptive beamforming reception is adopted to suppress MAI and also to combat the fading. We examine the effect of varying the number of transmit and receive antennas on the diversity gain and interference suppression.

Spreading codes are an essential component of the operation of a direct sequence code division multiple access (DS- CDMA) system. The need for efficient assignment of spreading codes to transmitters can arise for two reasons. Firstly, if the number of codes available is less than the number of users, then the codes must be assigned to achieve satisfactory re-use distances. Secondly, if the correlation properties of code pairs differ from pair to pair, then assignment can be used to ensure that close users have the best correlation properties. Many code classes (e.g. Gold codes) do not display this variation from pair to pair, but others (particularly those designed for quasisynchronous operation) do. The variation can be exploited to improve the overall performance. In this paper an adaption to code assignment of the type of algorithm used for frequency assignment is described, and the potential benefits explored.

The blind multi-user detection of direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) communication signals is considered in this paper. We utilize a mean of statistical technique called independent component analysis (ICA), which uses the higher order spectrum (HOS) analysis to extract independent source signals from a mixture of signals. This is known as blind source separation (BSS). A slowly-fading CDMA signal model, where the data is expressed as a linear combination of the convoluted independent symbol sequences is considered in this paper. The symbols estimation and the multiple-access interference suppression are affected by transforming the blind multi-user detection problem to an equivalent BSS problem. The used ICA algorithm is the fast fixed-point independent component analysis (FPICA) algorithm. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the ICA approach in the blind detection of DS-CDMA signals.

Performance of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) and bit error rates (BERs) of the maximum ratio combining (MRC) multistage minimum-mean squared error (MMSE), minimum output energy (MOE), best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) and maximum likelihood (ML) receivers are analyzed for direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems in multipath Rayleigh fading channels, based on the common multistage structure we proposed previously (Sau-Hsuan Wu et al., Proc. IEEE Globecom, 2002, 2003; Proc. IEEE ICC, 2003). The SINRs of these receivers are proved to be monotonically increasing with the number of applied stages. The upper bound of output SINRs and its achievability conditions are also provided, which are shown to form the condition for the occurrence of BER floors of the multistage MRC MMSE/MOE/BLUE/ML multiuser receivers. A rule for selecting the number of stages is thus provided to take full advantage of the multistage structure of these receivers.

The use of spreading codes in a communication system provides inherent interference cancellation in the form of processing gain. This is not sufficient at times, since the quality of communications can degrade severely when the interfering signal has not been canceled effectively. Hence, additional interference mitigation schemes are necessary. In a cellular network employing direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) system, interferences originate from various sources, including the neighboring cells. This is called adjacent cell interferences. Since this interference is independent of the source-of-interest, this paper uses this fact by applying independent component analysis (ICA) to cancel this interference. ICA is used as a filter to eliminate this interference after which any conventional detection scheme can be used. Numerical experiments indicate the performance gains achieved when using this structure. Additionally, we have simulated a soft lower bound that demonstrates the loss of performance due to this interference.

A code-constrained inverse filter criterion based approach was recently presented by J.K. Tugnait and Tongtong Li (see IEEE Trans. Sig. Processing, ***-49, p.1300-9, 2001) for blind detection of a desired user in asynchronous short-code DS-CDMA (direct sequence code division multiple access) systems over multipath channels. The method proposed therein works well for low-to-moderate loading; however, it can converge to an undesired user under high loading. We augment this method with a binary hypothesis testing approach for extracted user identification (whether the desired user is acquired/extracted) and for successive user cancellation (if an undesired user is extracted, cancel its contribution and repeat). An illustrative simulation example is presented.

CDMA2000 is the American telecommunication standard for 3G. It is a wideband spread spectrum radio interface designed to provide high data rates and multimedia services to the wireless user. It has two modes of operation, 1X (DS-CDMA) and 3X (MC-CDMA). In this paper, we compare the forward link performance of the two modes for a satellite environment. In order to focus our comparison on the transmission technology (DS-CDMA, MC-CDMA), two services with similar data rates and the same coding scheme, are studied.

Parallel interference cancellation (PIC) detector is designed to subtract the multi-access interference (MAI), and hence, it has the potential to achieve further performance improvement for direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems. However, its performance depends on the accuracy of its data estimation. In the conventional PIC (CPIC) detector, the data estimation is based on the matched filter (MF), which results in poor performance. Moreover, in multi-cell environment, CPIC suffers from the interference from other cells. These disadvantages limit the potential of PIC. In this paper, a new PIC scheme is proposed and examined in detail, which uses blind adaptive minimum mean square error (MMSE) detectors instead of MFs for data estimation in each cancellation stage. Theoretical performance analyses as well as numerical simulations in varied situations reveal that the scheme has much improved performance over the CPIC. More importantly, it is immune to the near-far problem and is able to suppress the interference from other cells.
