An adaptive parallel interference cancellation (PIC) receiver with pre and post diversity combining for the multi-carrier direct sequence code division multiple access (MC-DS-CDMA) system is presented and its performance investigated. By taking advantage of the combining techniques before and after the adaptive PIC stage, the diversity provided by the MC-DS-CDMA system can be exploited to improve further the bit error probability performance and increase the user/data capacity. Results show that this adaptive PIC receiver outperforms the conventional PIC receiver for MC-DS-CDMA systems. However, our studies reveal that this can only be achieved with the appropriate selection of the step size and the choice of initial weights, especially when the processing gain is low. Results also show that the advantage of using the adaptive PIC beyond the first stage of the multi-stage interference cancellation structure is only apparent when the level of MAI is high.

A joint detection-decoding (JDD) receiver performs multiuser detection and channel decoding jointly, where information about channel codes is utilized for multiuser detection. The performance of such a receiver is improved, but its complexity is also increased. In this paper, we propose a JDD receiver with reduced complexity, where parallel interference cancellation and convolutional codes are employed. We show its excellent performance via simulation.

This paper combines multiuser detection and multicarrier signaling technique for direct sequence code division multiple access system (DS/CDMA). These techniques are analyzed in multipath fading environment. The receiver provides a decorrelating detector for each carrier and the outputs of the correlators are combined with a maximal-ratio combiner. The system performance is evaluated over Nakagami fading channels in the presence of partial band interference with numerical method. The system performance of multiuser detection combining multi-carrier DS/CDMA with the conventional single-carrier decorrelating detector was also compared.

Multiuser detection is an effective method to suppress the multiple access interference (MAI) and improve the performance of direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) communication systems. Since the optimum decision boundary is nonlinear structure in the optimum multiuser detector can improve the performance of the receiver. The authors of this paper have proposed two nonlinear blind adaptive interference cancellation algorithms (the exact Newton and the approximate Newton) in one of their earlier works [Guo Linlin and Sadasivan,P.K., Sept. 2002]. In this paper, a complete performance analysis and characterization of the nonlinear schemes with respect to various asynchronous parameters are investigated in both synchronous and asynchronous DS-CDMA systems. The numerical results show that the adaptive blind multi-user detectors yield significant bit-error-rate (BER) improvement over the conventional matched filter detector in the presence of strong MAI. Further, the two nonlinear adaptive algorithms outperform the linear algorithm due to the nonlinear nature of the transmitted signals. Most attractively, the approximate Newton algorithm offers lower computational complexity, higher numerical stability and similar BER performance in comparison to the exact Newton algorithm.

A multistep linear prediction (MSLP) approach is presented for blind channel estimation for short-code DS-CDMA (direct sequence code division multiple access) signals in time-varying multipath channels using a receiver antenna array. The time-varying channel is assumed to be described by a complex exponential basis expansion model (CE-BEM). We first extend a recently proposed MSLP approach to blind channel estimation for time-varying SIMO (single-input multiple-output) systems, to time-varying MIMO systems in order to define a "signal" subspace. Then the knowledge of the spreading code of a desired user is exploited in conjunction with the signal subspace to estimate the time-varying channel of the desired user. Sufficient conditions for channel identifiability are investigated. An illustrative simulation example is provided.

In this paper, we propose a widely linear (WL) decision-feedback (DF) minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) receiver for direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) with binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation. Both theoretical considerations and simulations show that the novel receiver yields significant performance gains over both WL receivers without feedback and conventional DF receivers. In particular, the proposed WL DF-MMSE receiver achieves a high performance even in overloaded systems. For efficient adaptation of the filter coefficients a WL least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm and a WL recursive least-squares (RLS) algorithm are devised.

In this paper, an adaptive parallel interference cancellation (PIC) scheme is proposed for the asynchronous multicarrier direct sequence code division multiple access (MC-DS-CDM A) system. An adaptive MAI estimation algorithm is applied before the PIC stage to improve the accuracy of the MAI cancellation. The performance behaviour of our proposed detector is investigated and its analytic hit error probability is derived. The theoretical results agreed well with the simulations. It is shown that the adaptive PIC receiver outperforms the matched filter and the conventional PIC receiver for the MC-DS-CDMA system in a fading channel.

This paper introduces an efficient and improved design of chip waveforms to minimize the multiple access interference (MAI) in band-limited direct sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems. For the ease of implementation, the DS-CDMA system employs a time-limited chip waveform, whereas its band limitation is ensured by the low-pass filters at both the transmitter and the receiver ends. The design uses sinusoids to synthesize the time-limited chip waveform so that the portion of its spectrum across the specified bandwidth is as flat as possible. It is shown that using a simple series expansion (with only a few terms) the synthesized chip waveforms significantly outperforms the spreading/despreading waveforms previously proposed, particularly for large values of the chip duration-bandwidth product.

Utilization of wireless miniaturized electronic systems in medical diagnosis, environmental monitoring and other industrial applications has been made possible by emergence of system-on-chip technology. An important task in such a system is to convey information reliably on a multiple access based environment. Communication systems targeting miniaturized sensor networks are also characterized by their restricted power and area constraints. We describe a communication system based on direct sequence code division multiple access method.

In this paper, a novel blind minimum-output-energy (MOE) algorithm for adjustment of the unbiased widely linear (WL) minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) filters for multiple access interference (MAI) suppression for direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) is introduced and analyzed. We analyze the steady-state signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the convergence of the proposed blind WL stochastic gradient algorithm. Wherever possible comparisons with the linear blind MOE algorithm are made. Both analytical considerations and simulations show in good agreement the superiority of the novel WL adaptive algorithm. Nevertheless, it requires a lower computational complexity than its linear counterpart.
