In a practical DS-CDMA (direct sequence code division multiple access) system, the desired user suffers from significant multiple access interference (MAI) resulting from the presence of other users in a time varying multipath channel. This problem is particularity limiting on the uplink (UL), where time asynchronous users transmit over independent fading channels. This paper presents a novel receiver architecture that is reconfigurable to optimize performance adaptively in a multiuser scenario under time varying frequency selective fading channels plus additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). the UMTS TDD (time division duplex) CDMA UL format is considered. System performance in terms of uncoded BER (bit error rate) and overall capacity are presented. The results demonstrate that the proposed architecture can greatly reduce the interference floor at the base station (BS) and thus significantly improve the performance and capacity.

This paper investigates the effect of chip waveform shaping on multiple access interference (MAI) in band-limited direct sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDAM) systems. In particular, it concentrates on the family of band-limited waveforms with zero interchip interference (ICI) and with arbitrary excess bandwidth /spl beta/ in the range 0 /spl les/ /spl beta/ /spl les/ 1. A criterion for the performance comparison of various band-limited chip waveforms based on the elementary density function is introduced. The comparison is made among different chip waveforms, including the optimal chip waveform, the square-root raised cosine proposed for 3G wireless systems and the previously proposed "better than Nyquist" pulse. Finally, the effect of varying the roll-off factor of a band-limited chip waveform on the MAI level is also investigated.

Next generation wireless communication is based on a global system of fixed and wireless mobile services that are transportable across different network backbones, network service providers and network geographical boundaries. Although power control is essential for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) cellular systems to overcome the near-far problem, one of the most important problems for the system is handover management and its effects on the system. This paper presents an approach to investigate the effects of soft handover and perfect power control on the forward link in a DS-CDMA cellular system. Especially, the relationships between the size of the handover zone and the capacity gain are evaluated under a log-normal shadow channel. The optimization of the maximum forward capacity is very necessary for matching the maximum size of the soft handover zone to the various system characteristics.

A new multi-carrier, direct sequence code division multiple access (MC-DS-CDMA) system with multi-code is proposed. Transmitted data are first serial-to-parallel converted to D parallel data streams and a pre-coding with a rate of D/M is followed. Next, these pre-coded parallel streams are multiplexed by an inverse Walsh-Hadamard transform (IWHT) (M/spl times/M) and M super-bit streams are formed. Due to using the pre-coding, the super-bit streams will be two-level symbol streams. Then, the super-bits are once more serial-to-parallel converted to form M parallel super-bit sub-streams. Finally, all the M parallel super-bit streams are direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) modulated and transmitted using M orthogonal carriers. In the receiver, after demodulation and WHT operation, the strategy of minimum mean square error (MMSE) is used for detection. Based on a correlator receiver for each carrier, its upper bound of bit error rate (BER) performance over Nakagami fading channel is analyzed. Numerical results are compared with those of a single carrier DS-CDMA system (SC-DS-CDMA). It is shown that the proposed MC-DS-CDMA scheme has much better BER performance compared to the SC-DS-CDMA system.

The performance of a code division multiple access system depends on the correlation properties of the employed spreading code. An auto-correlation function with a distinct peak enables proper synchronization and suppresses intersymbol interference. Low cross-correlation values between spreading sequences are desired to suppress multiple access interference. However, these requirements contradict each other and a trade-off needs to be established. In this paper, a modified bridging method is proposed to minimize cross-correlation with auto-correlation being allowed to lie within a fixed region. This approach is applied to the design of complex spreading sequences.

The problem of constructing a blind adaptive multiuser detector (MUD) is considered for direct sequence code division multiple access signals transmitted through multipath channels. Due to the slow speed of convergence of channel estimation and existent unreason in state estimation in statistical algorithm based blind adaptive multiuser detection, hidden Markov model theory is proposed as the basis of a new algorithm which uses decorrelation to estimate the multichannel impulse response (MCIR). The algorithm extracts the correlation between the fore states and the back states and increases the speed of channel response estimation. Simulation results illustrate that it has an excellent effect in suppressing multipath interference and resolving the near-far problem, and, at the same time, the algorithm has global convergence and good stability. Under similar condition, the capability of the algorithm is better than that of MABW.

A randomly spread direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) system operating in flat fading is considered. Users are assumed to employ equal rates and transmit powers. The receiver ranks the users according to their received powers, and decodes only the subset that can be reliably decoded. Confining the discussion to asymptotic analysis (in terms of number of users and processing gain), we study the matched-filter detector, the linear minimum mean squared error (MMSE) detector, and the "optimum detector" under the above strongest-users decoding scheme. The total capacities under outage constraint, derived as functions of the fraction of users that cannot be reliably decoded (equivalent to the "outage probability"), are analyzed and compared.

In this paper, we propose a class of multi-valued signature sequences for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) systems. We obtain the signature sequences by modifying the coefficients of the subbands of a perfect reconstruction quadrature mirror filter (PR-QMF) bank. The class has perfect correlation properties for synchronous DS/CDMA systems, and in general has better correlation properties than other well-known sequences in asynchronous DS/CDMA systems also. Some numerical results for the performance of the asynchronous DS/CDMA systems with several sequences including the proposed class of sequences are obtained.

This paper presents an adaptive code-aided technique for the suppression of narrowband interference (NBI) in direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems. This technique uses a multiuser detector based on the interacting multiple model (BOA) algorithm. This detector is based on the concept that the effective model of the received signal at a time instance can be approximated by one of the models in the IMM algorithm. Simulations are used to compare the performance of the proposed technique with that of the recursive least squares (RLS) version of the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) for multiuser detection.

A downlink space-time block coding transmission scheme is assessed via Monte Carlo simulations in a direct sequence code division multiple access context. Raw symbol error rate performance of the space-time transmit diversity scheme defined in the UTRA/FDD standard serves as a benchmark. Exploiting space-time code properties, the new scheme facilitates radio channel equalization and space-time decoding prior to despreading. Assuming ideal equalization, the proposed diversity scheme is therefore own cell interference free and outperforms conventional, schemes in frequency selective fading environments. With increasing channel estimation error, however, the proposed scheme tends to suffer from multiple access interference.
