This paper presents the interference cancellation receiver for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) downlink channel with orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) channelization code. The proposed receiver uses code grouping by the correlation property between OVSF mother and child codes. The proposed CGIC receiver does not requires the code information and activity of other user. The CGIC receiver has a lower computational complexity than other multiuser interference cancellation receivers. In the computer simulation results, the proposed receiver demonstrated huge performance improvement over the conventional matched filter receiver, RAKE receiver and serial interference cancellation (SIC) receiver in a multipath channel.

The paper describes the application of multiple signal classification (MUSIC) and its derivative algorithms to the estimation of direction of arrival (DOA) of multipath signals received from multiple users on the uplink of a wideband direct sequence code division multiple access (wideband DS-CDMA) system. Due to the multiple-access interference (MAI) and multipath, a high number of signals impinge on the antenna array and this scenario causes conventional direction-finding algorithms (such as MUSIC) to fail. The proposed approach extends the use of MUSIC and allows to provide unique estimates even when the number of DOAs exceeds the number of antenna array elements.

A new analog correlator circuit for a direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) demodulator is proposed. The circuit consists of only 13 switches, 4 capacitors and 2 level shifters. Simulation with a code length of 127 reveals that the proposed circuit dissipates 3.4 mW at 128 MHz. The proposed circuit had been implemented into a Si chip using a 0.6 /spl mu/m CMOS process. The occupation area of 256 /spl mu/m/spl times/245 /spl mu/m is estimated to be 9 times smaller compared to other reported equivalent analog correlators.

We derive the bit-error-probability (BEP) of direct sequence code division multiple access systems in fading channels perturbed by additive white Gaussian noise. Our approach does not rely on Gaussian or improved Gaussian approximations for the multiple-access interference. We express the BEP as a series which can be conveniently truncated to achieve a desired accuracy.

The fundamental figure of merit that specifies the ultimate performance of cellular systems is the per-cell spectral efficiency. The underlying tacit assumption in previous spectral efficiency analyses is that all active users are (reliably) decoded, regardless of their received powers. Unfortunately, in practice, this assumption may not hold and we consider an alternative approach. Assuming single cell-site processing, four types of multiuser detection strategies are considered: (1) the "conventional" matched-filter detector; (2) the linear MMSE detector; (3) a detector that "optimally" decodes the transmissions of the maximum decodable subset of intra-cell users, referred to as the "single-cell optimum (SCO) detector"; (4) an "optimum" detector referred to as the "single cell-site processing optimum (SCPO) detector". The strategies are analyzed and compared in terms of their outage constrained capacities, analytically derived as functions of the fraction of undecodable users (FUU), equivalent to the outage probability.

We discuss data-link error control for reliable packet transmission in direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) wireless communications systems. We analyze (transport control protocol) segment loss rate in a DS-CDMA system which employs selective repeat automatic repeat request (SR-ARQ) as the error control scheme with multicell environments. Our computer simulation results show that, in multicell environments, the improving effect of SR-ARQ on segment loss rate is small because of the burst frame error which is caused by intercell interference. Furthermore, we propose a method to overcome the burst frame error, and show that the method can significantly reduce segment loss rate.

Transmit power control is indispensable in direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) based systems such as the Satellite Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (S-UMTS). The performance of fixed step-size closed loop power control is significantly affected by command delay due to processing and propagation. This calls for insights into the dynamics of transmit power control taking into account the effects of delays. In this paper, therefore, we have developed an analytical model for the dynamic behaviour of the error process as a stochastic difference equation. We have modelled the effects of delays in the presence of random external disturbances as a random walk process. Using the stochastic difference equation, we have developed an expression for the steady-state pdf of the power control error process as a lognormal distribution. However, we demonstrate that in cases where the quantisation errors of the power control command are significant, the error process departs from the lognormal distribution approximation. This shows that the generally assumed lognormal distribution for power control error process may not always be valid.

A randomly spread direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) multi-cell system operating in flat fading is considered. The model adheres to A.D. Wyner's infinite linear cell-array setting (see IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, vol.40, p.1713-27, 1994), where only adjacent-cell interference is present, and characterized by a single parameter, 0/spl les//spl alpha//spl les/1. Users are assumed to employ equal rates and transmit powers. The receiver ranks the intracell users according to their received powers, and decodes only the subset that can be reliably decoded. Confining the discussion to asymptotic analysis (in terms of number of users and processing gain), we study four multiuser detection strategies, differing in the amount and type of information available to the receiver with respect to (both intracell and out-of-cell) interfering users. The total capacities under outage constraint, derived as functions of the fraction of users that cannot be reliably decoded (equivalent to the "outage probability"), are analyzed and compared.

In this paper, we evaluate by computer simulations the signal energy per information bit (E/sub b//N/sub 0/) for rate compatible punctured turbo (RCPT) coded hybrid ARQ for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) with antenna diversity reception and Rake combining in a frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel when the number of allowable retransmissions is limited. When the number of allowable retransmissions is unlimited, transmitting the minimum amount of redundancy bits with each retransmission would result in the highest throughput as unnecessary redundancy is avoided. However in a practical system, the number of retransmissions allowed is limited to avoid unacceptable time delay before the successful transmission of a packet. When the number of retransmissions is limited, residual bit error is produced. In this paper, we consider different RCPT hybrid ARQ schemes with limited number of retransmissions. It is found that the type II hybrid ARQ scheme is the most favorable in terms of required E/sub b//N/sub 0/ for a given bit error rate (BER), while the type I hybrid ARQ scheme is the most favorable for delay sensitive systems. For the type II hybrid ARQ schemes, the minimum required E/sub b//N/sub 0/ is attained after all the parity bits are transmitted and hence depends on the puncturing period.

We present an accurate bit error rate (BER) expression for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) communication systems over Nakagami multipath fading channels. This problem has been considered by Trabeisi and Yongacoglu (1995). However, the receiver of Trabeisi et al. only extracted the first path and regarded the other multipaths as interference. Our BER analysis in this paper use a RAKE receiver to exploit all the multipaths in a maximal ratio combiner. We adopt an improved Gaussian approximation (IGA) method proposed by Holtzman (1992), which takes into account the second moment effect of the multiple-access interference (MAI) variance, to derive the error performance expression. We show by Monte Carlo (MC) simulation that the derived formula gives a more accurate prediction of the error performance as compared with that obtained by using the standard Gaussian approximation (SGA) method.
