For multiuser data signals the minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) estimation using an array of antennas is analyzed for binary, synchronous direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems. The receiver consists of an array of beamformers followed by a bank of matched filters and the MMSE multiuser detector (MUD). The performance of the space-time MMSE is investigated over both the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, and the flat Rayleigh fading channel. Digital computer simulations are used in the paper to confirm the validity of the approximations used in the analysis to determine the system bit error rate.

The conventional single user detector in DS/CDMA (direct sequence code division multiple access) systems involves multiple access interference and near-far effect which cause the limitation in capacity. The complexity of optimum multiuser detectors also grows up exponentially with the number of users. There has been a lot of interest in suboptimal multiuser detectors with less complexity and reasonable performance. In this paper, we apply decision based neural network (DBNN), fuzzy decision neural network (FDNN), and discriminative learning and backpropagation neural networks employing multilayer perceptron for detection of signals of users in DS/CDMA systems in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. We also show that FDNN and discriminative learning neural net have almost the same performance.

This paper experimentally investigated the bit error rate (BER) performance using closed loop (CL) mode transmit diversity, which was discussed in ongoing standardization of the third generation partnership project (3GPP) for the application of dedicated physical channels (DPCHs) in the forward link of wideband direct sequence code division multiple access (W-CDMA). We evaluated three CL modes using weighting factors W/sub 1,n/=A/sub 1,u/e/sup j/spl phi/1*/ and W/sub 2,n/=A/sub 1,n/e/sup j/spl phi/2*/ that are calculated according to feedback information (FBI) bits sent via the reverse link: Mode 1=:/spl phi//sub 1,n/=0, /spl phi//sub 2,n/=(/spl plusmn//spl pi//4/spl plusmn/3/spl pi//4), A/sub 1,n/=A/sub 2,n/=/spl radic/(1/2), Mode 2:/spl phi//sub 1,n/=0, /spl phi//sub 2,n/=(0,/spl pi/), A/sub 1,n/=A/sub 2,n/=/spl radic/(1/2), Mode 3: /spl phi//sub 1,n/=/spl phi//sub 2,n/=0, (A/sub 1/,A/sub 2,n/)=((1,0),(0,1)). The laboratory experimental results clarified that the received timing difference of transmitted signals from two antennas should be smaller than approximately 1/4 chip duration in order to limit the loss of transmit power to within 0.3 dB. It was also clarified that the total required transmit power for achieving the average BER of 10/sup 3/ was increased as the fading correlation between two antennas becomes larger due to the decreased diversity effect in a slow fading environment such as when the maximum Doppler frequency f/sub D/=5 Hz. However, it was increased as the fading correlation becomes small, in a fast fading environment above approximately f/sub D/=160 Hz because the combined signal power was decreased since the phase difference of the two received signals increased due to the tracking inability of the CL control. The field experimental results showed that when FBI bit errors occur in a fast transmit power of a DPCH without antenna diversity reception at a mobile station was decreased by approximately 1-2 dB compared to the case without transmit

Iterative schemes for demodulating M-ary orthogonal signaling formats in direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems are proposed and compared with the standard matched filter receiver and the standard parallel interference cancellation (PIC) receiver. The considered system is similar to the uplink (reverse link) of an IS-95 system. The channel is assumed to be a time-varying flat Rayleigh-fading channel, and a channel estimation scheme is proposed. The proposed receivers are shown to provide large capacity gains compared with the conventional receiver.

This paper evaluates the cell search time performance of our previously proposed 3-step cell search method in a 2-cell site environment by laboratory and field experiments for wideband direct sequence code division multiple access (W-CDMA) mobile radio using asynchronous cell site operation. In the ongoing standardization in the third generation partnership project (3GPP), our original method was refined with respect to several points in order to reduce the complexity of cell search. The cell search methods used in the paper are based on the 3GPP standard including the refinements. The experimental results show that the method achieves the fast cell search time of several hundred milliseconds in actual multipath-fading channels: the cell search is accomplished in less than approximately 300 and 700 msec at 90% of the detection probability when 9.1% and 5.0% of the total transmit power of a cell site was assigned to the common pilot channel (CPICH), respectively, in a 2-cell site environment.

In direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA), matched filters calculate the cross-correlation function of a received signal spread by a pseudo-random noise (PN) sequence and a replica PN sequence. A matched filter like this can be viewed as a finite impulse response (FIR) filter with a PN sequence used as the binary tap weights, minimizing search and synchronization times in DS-CDMA receivers. This paper introduces an approach for implementing matched filters based on recycling integrator correlators (RICs) that use a sensible combination of analog and digital processing to minimize area and power consumption. The matched filter is organized by combining an array of RICs, a cyclic shift register which stores a PN sequence, and a rotary multiplexer which transfers the correlation values one by one. This implementation provides: 1) an input analog signal processing capability without the need of a fast ADC; 2) an already digitally-coded output stream; 3) small capacitor ratios for the switched-capacitor (SC) integrators; and 4) minimum die-area and current consumption for the available technology and the spreading ratio, that is, the length of the PN sequence. The fabrication process is a 0.35 /spl mu/m CMOS double-metal, double-poly process. The chip occupies 22.8 mm/sup 2/ and dissipates 23 mW with a 1.8 V power supply.

In wideband direct sequence code division multiple access (W-CDMA), employing an adaptive antenna array is a very promising technique to reduce severe multiple access interference (MAI) especially from high rate users. This paper proposes a fast and accurate two-step antenna-weight tracking algorithm incorporated in a pilot symbol-assisted coherent adaptive antenna array diversity (PSA-CAAAD) receiver and evaluates its performance both by computer simulations and laboratory experiments. In the proposed scheme, the receiver antenna weights are updated by using both an adaptive algorithm based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion and the signal-to-interference power ratio (SIR) measurements employing multiple sets of antenna weights (MSAW), in which other sets except for a master set of antenna weights are simply generated by a master set. Computer simulation results show that antenna weights of a four-antenna PSA-CAAAD receiver using the proposed beam-tracking algorithm tracks changes in the direction of arrival (DOA) of the desired user at up to 20 degrees per sec, which corresponds to 250 km/h at 200 m from a base station. We also confirm, based on experiments in a radio anechoic room, that the generated antenna weights can track the DOA changes of up to 12 degrees/sec.

Different from multiuser detection, synchronization in multiuser communications systems has its unique features. We revisit effective multiuser synchronizers in a systematic way and classify them into two categories: linear multiuser synchronizers and the multiuser synchronizers based on the frequency domain approach. Both categories of estimators have their special advantages according to their characteristics and are applicable to practical DS/CDMA communications systems.

A multistep linear prediction approach is presented for blind channel estimation and detection of asynchronous short-code DS-CDMA (direct sequence code division multiple access) signals in multipath channels. Only the spreading code of the desired user is assumed to be known; its transmission delay may be unknown. We exploit the previously proposed multistep linear prediction (MSLP) approach for blind multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel estimation in conjunction with the structure imposed by the desired user's spreading code sequence. With the knowledge of the desired user's code sequence, only the second-order statistics of the data are needed under certain sufficient conditions on the underlying multiuser MIMO transfer function. An illustrative simulation example is provided.

Wideband code division multiples access (CDMA) is one of the major options for the next generation mobile cellular system. However, there is only limited research on the admission control for CDMA systems containing multiple service classes. In this paper the multi-service CDMA admission control problem is addressed by an approach which is conceptually simple, and yet produces satisfactory results. In our approach the limit on the acceptable interference level in a cell is translated into a constraint on the number of users of each service class in the local and neighboring cells. The randomness of user locations, shadowing and imperfect power control is captured as a whole by a log-normal distribution. Simulation results show that this approach is quite accurate over a wide range of required system outage probabilities.
