Multi-user receivers in asynchronous direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems require the knowledge of several parameters such as timing delay between users. The goal of this work is to present a near-far resistant joint multi-user synchronization and detection algorithm for DS-CDMA systems. The solution is based on the conditional maximum likelihood (CML) estimation method (classically used in the context of sensor array processing) that leads to a fast convergence algorithm to estimate the time delays among users. At the same time the estimator implements the decorrelating detector, identifying the transmitted symbols for the different users.

The bit error rate (BER) of a direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) cellular system incorporating antenna arrays for spatial filtering is determined when operated in an environment where the propagation characteristics are a function of the direction of arrival (DOA) of signals. Specifically this paper analyses the performance of the system in an environment where the multipath signals on each of the diversity branches of a RAKE receiver have varying fading characteristics. This scenario would typically describe urban environments where a large number of multipath echoes are present, each with different fading statistics resulting from the non-homogeneous propagation paths seen by each multipath echo.

In this paper, we examine the performance of minimum output energy, subspace, and minimum entropy criteria for blind acquisition/ linear-equalization of short-code CDMA signals. Environments with significant multipath, user load, and asynchronism are considered, and it is found that a minimum entropy criterion offers significantly superior MSE performance in these situations.

We propose a framework for throughput and stability analysis of a direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) network. Given the chip rate, processing gains, packet structure, coding scheme, and the characteristics of the wireless channel, we derive a system of non-linear fixed point equations for the sustainable link bit rates. The dimension of this system is equal to the number of network nodes receiving transmissions from other nodes. Generally, this non-linear system may have multiple locally stable solutions which indicates a possible instability of the DS-CDMA network because the persistent link bit rates may depend on the initial link loads. As an example, we consider throughput and stability of the reverse link in a cellular system, i.e., from mobiles to the base station. A reverse link is described by a single fixed point equation regardless of the number of mobiles.

This paper presents a 2 V DS-CDMA programmable digital matched filter with a differential and pipelined structure. A differential PN (Pseudo-Noise) code scheme is adopted to reduce the number of multiplication and summations (M&S). The PDDMF (Pipelined Digital Differential Matched Filter) not only saves hardware and power, but also improves the operation speed, which makes PDDMF more suitable for personal communication at high speed and low power requirements than the conventional approach. The PDDMF, implemented in a 0.6 /spl mu/m CMOS technology, is clocked at 2.5 MHz and consumes 1.6 mW from a single 2 V power supply.

We study the signal-to-interference (SIR) performance of linear multiuser receivers in random environments, where signals from the users arrive in "random directions". Such random environment may arise in a DS-CDMA system with random signature sequences, or in a system with antenna diversity where the randomness is due to channel fading. Our results show that for both the decorrelator and the MMSE receiver, and the SIR distribution is asymptotically Gaussian in a system with large number of users. We compute closed-form expressions for the asymptotic means and variances for both receivers. Simulation results are presented to verify the accuracy of the asymptotic results for finite-sized systems.

direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) techniques have received a great deal of attention for current and future communication systems. One of the major considerations in implementing a DS-CDMA system is the necessity for accurate power control to ensure adequate quality-of-service and capacity. This paper investigates the measurement error of an open-loop power control algorithm under transmit power limitation. The power control error is analysed and numerically computed.

An effective power-control law (PCL), adaptive to the mobile distance from the base station, is proposed for the forward-link cellular code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system. In particular, two schemes, namely, linear and exponential schemes are demonstrated. The proposed PCL avoids the tedious decision on the threshold distance, which is required for the nth-order-of-distance (nOD) PCL. The relative power consumption among different schemes is also presented to illustrate the disadvantages of the previously reported schemes. Comparison with conventional nOD PCL shows that the proposed PCL yields more balanced and better performance. Numerical results suggest that the linear scheme may be applicable to macro-cell systems, whereas the exponential scheme is more suitable for micro- or pico-cell systems.

When the code phase offset between two sequences is within one chip duration, the sum of two successive matched filter outputs has a constant value regardless of the residual code phase offset if the noise is absent. Based on this observation, we propose a new code acquisition scheme, which is robust to the variation of the residual code phase offset and outperforms the conventional scheme. Numerical results are also given to show that the proposed scheme is more robust to the variation of the residual code phase offset and has better performance than the conventional scheme on average.

Previously, the authors introduced a novel algorithm for long range prediction of flat fading channels that can reliably predict future fading coefficients far beyond the coherence time. This prediction capability provides enabling technology for power and bandwidth efficient adaptive modulation and coding methods. In this paper, we extend our results to the direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) channels. It is demonstrated that frequency selective channels encountered in CDMA can also be predicted far ahead, and that the proposed prediction methods can be combined with RAKE receivers. In addition, we utilize prediction to improve performance of the selective transmitter diversity system proposed for the third generation CDMA.
