Combined error correction and detection techniques, or hybrid automatic-repeat-request (ARQ) schemes with negative acknowledgment are considered for highly reliable reverse link data transmission in direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) personal communication systems. In this paper a coherent link using OQPSK and continuous pilot signal assisted radio channel estimation is analyzed. The proposed selective repeat hybrid ARQ scheme employs an inner convolutional code for error correction and an outer shortened BCH code for error detection. Accepted packet error rate and throughput are derived as a function of the error correction encoded frame error rate. An optimum signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) assignment maximizing the system's capacity is also found. Analysis and simulations show that by applying the proposed type I hybrid ARQ scheme with properly selected system parameters, virtually error free and highly efficient data transmission in CDMA personal communication systems is possible.

Summary form only given. Mobile communications services are penetrating society at an explosive rate supporting our goal of mobile communications: anytime and anywhere with anyone. Approaching the 21st century, we need to add one more important objective: multimedia services to mobile users. However, the current 2nd generation systems are optimized for voice. To support a variety of wideband multimedia services, e.g. high speed Internet and high quality video/images, the 3rd generation systems, called IMT-2000 systems, are now under intensive development worldwide. A wideband direct sequence code division multiple access (W-CDMA) is believed to be the most promising mobile radio access scheme. The author introduces the evolution scenario of mobile radio communications systems towards IMT-2000 and addresses the state-of-the art technology of W-CDMA. The important concept of W-CDMA and also a perspective on adaptive antenna array and interference cancellation techniques are presented.

This paper is an analysis of the bit error rate (BER) performance of direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) with error correcting code in Nakagami fading channel. We consider the effect of the non-identical fading parameter and the RAKE branches using error correcting code on the system performance of a coherent binary phase shift keying (BPSK) RAKE receiver operating in the Nakagami fading channel. The error only decoding and erasure-and-error decoding techniques are used and the lower bounds BER of the post decoding system for RS-codes are obtained. The effect of the non-identical fading parameter makes the BER system performance slightly better than the identical case. The results obtained show that by using error correcting codes, increasing the branches and the identical fading parameter, the BER of coherent DS-CDMA in an arbitrary Nakagami fading channel can be improved significantly.

We study a multicarrier direct sequence code division multiple access (CDMA) system combined with interleaved serial concatenated convolutional codes. This combination of modulation method and coding scheme provides great flexibility in obtaining a particular bit error rate performance. With interleaved serial concatenated convolutional codes, in which an interleaver is situated between two convolutional codes connected in series, coding gain can be altered by changing the size of the interleaver, or by changing the rate or constraint length of either of the two constituent codes. With a multicarrier direct sequence CDMA system, frequency diversity can be obtained by spreading the code symbols across the carriers, and by using repetition coding. The number of carriers and the processing gain can be altered as well to achieve a particular performance goal. In addition, frequency diversity can be traded for data rate by parallel transmission of information symbols. This paper characterizes system performance so that intelligent tradeoffs can be made in system design. Emphasis is on terrestrial communication in fading for a personal communication system.

The performance of window-based PN acquisition algorithm is fully analyzed by a Markov chain acquisition model on the assumption of direct sequence code division multiple access forward link. The algorithm with a moderate window size has shorter acquisition time than the immediate verification algorithm has-especially in low Ec/No. This results from the fact that the window-based algorithm, which verifies only one code phase that has maximum correlation output, consumes an additional penalty time in each window even in the condition of frequent false alarms. As the mean acquisition time varies with the window size, we may have the code acquisition fast with the proper window size according to Ec/No.

direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) techniques have received a great deal of attention for current and future communication systems. One of the major considerations in implementing a DS-CDMA system is the necessity for accurate power control to ensure adequate quality-of-service and capacity. This paper investigates the power control errors that occur in a real microcellular environment for a variety of architectures. Furthermore, the mitigation of the effect of power control errors with varying spreading bandwidth is quantified.

In this paper we consider a single-user adaptive receiver for interference suppression in asynchronous direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) communication systems with large processing gains. We propose an decomposed adaptive filter structure for which each decomposed filter can be updated either in coupled way or in uncoupled way with its previous filters. Performance results for white Gaussian multiple access channel show that proposed adaptive filter converges faster than conventional adaptive filter.

An algorithm that structurally constrains adaptive filter coefficients within a cone around a given vector is derived. It is applied to the case when the given vector is the nominal spreading sequence of a user in a direct sequence code division multiple access system. The goal is to find the coefficients of an FIR filter that suppresses the multiuser interference. The output of the chip-matched filter produces the input of the FIR filter. The suppression is done by adaptively minimizing the constant modulus cost function. Knowledge of spreading sequences of other users is not needed. The size of the cone depends on the spreading sequence uncertainty and the worst case cross-correlation between the spreading sequences. The convergence and locking of the algorithm onto the desired user are investigated. The algorithm is compared with a back projection algorithm, a linearly constrained algorithm, and a constraintless algorithm. Under severe conditions the cone constrained constant modulus algorithm is the only one that locks onto the desired user.

A new adaptive combined array and multiuser detector (spatial and temporal) structure for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) has been proposed by Legnain, Falconer and Sheikh (see CCECE'98) to combat cochannel interference and increase the capacity for cellular CDMA. The structure uses a L-sensor (element) linear array. Each element is followed by a chip matched filter (CMF) and a fractionally spaced adaptive equalizer. The proposed structures combine the multipath component as well as suppressing interference. It outperforms the conventional receiver and the structures proposed by Abdulrahman, Sheikh and Falconer (IEEE JSAC, vol.12, no.4, p.698-706, 1994) and by Miller (see IEEE Tran. Comm., vol.43, no.2/3/4, p.1746-55, 1995) in-terms of capacity, near far resistance, multipath combining. The proposed structure can also operate in heavy traffic channels with many users having the same angle of arrival (AOA) as the desired user when the conventional array can not. The focus in this paper is the cochannel interference rejection and multipath combined capabilities of this structure. Analysis of the optimum tap weights and the minimum mean square error in multipath fading channels are provided, and comparison between this structure and the structures propose by Abdulrahman et al. and by Miller is also provided.

A soft-input, soft-output multiuser detection algorithm based on the log-MAP algorithm is presented for asynchronous multiple access networks. The algorithm is applied to a convolutionally coded direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) system. The proposed receiver architecture consists of a log-MAP multiuser detector followed by a log-MAP channel decoder. Information is fed back from the channel decoder to the multiuser detector, and processing proceeds in an iterative fashion analogous to the decoding of turbo codes. Simulation results show that the performance of a heavily loaded power controlled DS-CDMA system approaches the single-user bound for both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and fully-interleaved Rayleigh flat-fading channels.
