The present study looked into speakers' capacity to shorten narratives through retelling, and specifically at differences in such discourse compression between bilinguals' first (L1) and second (L2) language. A group of unbalanced Dutch-English bilinguals recounted the events from two cartoons in both languages four times. For each narration, word count (both including and excluding hesitation markers), duration, and fluency were recorded as dependent measures, all of which showed significant compression, i.e. economy in the oral production of the narrative, in both languages. Compression thus occurred in L1 as well as L2, indicating it relies on similar psycholinguistic mechanisms in both languages. Remarkably, whereas all L2 measures were less compressed in the initial narration than their L1 counterpart, compression with the first retelling was significantly higher in the L2 condition. Hence, whereas lexical access is expected to be more difficult in L2 initially, ultimately leading to increased disfluency, speaking behaviour did not seem to differ much from that in L1 once vocabulary, grammar, and syntax structures were primed.

This article analyzes two TV series that achieved their peak viewership in the last third of the 20th Century on RTVE, the Spanish public broadcaster, which drew from the literary and theatrical traditions of the Golden Age: El p & iacute;caro and Juncal. These two series involve interactions between literature, theater, and TV. It will be argued that the theatrical and literary discourse is integrated in the television discourse. Regarding the analysis of El p & iacute;caro and Juncal, attention will be paid to the linguistic aspects, including various forms of discourse such as monologues, dialogues, etc. The article will also address the translinguistic area, where verbal language is complemented in TV series by images to express gestural, facial expressions, body posture, proxemic, kinesic elements, and therefore achieve the integration of materials.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has captured the interest of multiple actors with speculations about its benefits and dangers. Despite increasing scholarly attention to the discourses of AI, there are limited insights on how different groups interpret and debate AI and shape its opportunities for action. We consider AI an issue field understood as a contested phenomenon where heterogeneous actors assert and debate the meanings and consequences of AI. Drawing on computational social science methods, we analyzed large amounts of text on how politicians (parliamentarians) consultancies (high reputation firms), and lay experts (AI-forum Reddit users) articulate meanings about AI. Through topic modeling, we identified diverse and co-existing discourses: politicians predominantly articulated AI as a societal issue requiring an ethical response, consultancies stressed AI as a business opportunity pushing a transformation-oriented discourse, and lay experts expressed AI as a technical issue shaping a techno-feature discourse. Moreover, our analysis details the hopes and fears within AI discourses, revealing that sentiment varies by actor group. Based on these findings, we contribute new insights about AI as an issue field shaped by the discursive work performed by heterogeneous actors.

This research investigates the potential of computational argumentation, specifically the application of the Abstract Argumentation Framework (AAF), to enhance the evaluation of deliberative quality in public discourse. It focuses on integrating AAF and its related semantics with the discourse Quality Index (DQI), which is a reputable indicator of deliberative quality. The motivation is to overcome the DQI's constraints using the AAF's formal and logical features by addressing dependency on hand coding and attention to specific speech acts. This is done by exploring how the AAF can identify conflicts among arguments and assess the acceptability of different viewpoints, potentially leading to a more automated and objective evaluation of deliberative quality. A pilot study is conducted on the topic of abortion to illustrate the proposed methodology. The findings of this research demonstrate that AAF methods can improve discourse analysis by automatically identifying strong arguments through conflict resolution strategies. They also emphasise the potential of the proposed procedure to mitigate the dependence on manual coding and improve deliberation processes.

This contribution explores the nexus between discourse Theory and Strategic Communication. Traditional positivist and rationalist approaches to business, economics, politics, and management often marginalize strategic communication as merely instrumental;whereas discursive approaches, and discourse Theory in particular, recognize its constitutive role in shaping social realities. This contribution therefore argues for the development of a discourse-theoretical approach to Strategic Communication, highlighting its potential to offer new insights and understandings. It first examines existing uses of the notion of discourse in Strategic Communication, before discussing discourse Theory's potential added value to its study. Next, it emphasizes the importance of discourse Theory scholars engaging with Strategic Communication topics. Finally, two examples contrasting non-discursive and discourse-theoretical approaches are presented, focusing respectively on populism and authenticity in corporate marketing campaigns. Overall, this paper advocates for a deeper integration of discourse Theory within the study of Strategic Communication.

Administrative staff in higher and health professions education have been described as invisible and been characterized by what they are not: non-academics, non-teachers, non-faculty and non-professionals. Staff appear as passive objects in literature and minimized in institutional reports. These characterizations contribute to the undervaluing of staff and can lead to inefficiencies or tensions in the working environment within health professions education. This study sought to identify discourses connected to the undervaluing of staff *** study used a Foucauldian-inspired critical discourse analysis approach within the context of a single Canadian Faculty of Medicine. Data collection involved compiling an archive of published literature and institutional archival documents extending approximately 150 years, interviews with twelve staff members and nine faculty members, and the author's lived experience as *** primary discourses of staff were identified: staff as caregiver, matriarch, and professional. These discourses regulate staff (and their relations with faculty) differently, creating differences in what staff and faculty can do, be, or say (or not do, be, or say). While in the first two discourses of caregiver and matriarch, staff power is largely absent or obscured, in the third discourse, differing constructs of the concept of "professional" used by faculty and staff demonstrate a rise in power of staff and the declining authority of *** administrative staff back in and centring staff voices can help provide agency to staff and reduce or help navigate possible tensions in the workplace.

This article reconstructs the sociotechnical imaginaries of "Big Data" in Germany, South Africa, and the United States over 10 years. Our inquiry into the meaning-making undertaken on expansive datafication processes began from the observation that since its inception circa 2010, the buzz phrase "Big Data" has not only denoted a technology but has also gestured toward a vast array of ambitions and concerns that are reflective of values, economic perspectives, and cultural preoccupations. We use a frame analysis to investigate the unfolding journalistic discourse and discuss the sociotechnical imaginaries of Big Data in cross-national comparison. We found three dominant views that centered chiefly on rebuilding a datafied society, reviving datafied business, and retooling datafied surveillance. Despite substantial data scandals and whistleblower revelations, affirmative views prevailed. The trope of reviving datafied business was most often evoked from 2011 to 2013, but rebuilding a datafied society became the central perspective from 2014 onward. This order of prominence existed in the United States and Germany, whereas a business-oriented view predominated in South African media. Some publications in all three countries ran counter to the general trend but only exerted limited influence on the overall picture.

BackgroundThe poultry sector is the largest contributor, in terms of the livestock sector to the Gross Domestic Product in Sri Lanka, providing economic security to the country and food security to people. There are three farming systems: broiler, layer and backyard chicken. The backyard chicken farming system is widespread across Sri Lanka. The population in Sri Lanka comprises five ethnic groups, four religious practices and is from a wide spectrum of economic *** study was conducted to explore the political, economic and cultural discourse surrounding backyard farming in the Western and North-Western Provinces of Sri Lanka. The overall purpose is to identify challenges and enablers to make backyard chicken rearing a sustainable economic *** study used qualitative research methodology. Thirty-eight semi-structured interviews were conducted among backyard poultry farmers in two provinces and the data were transcribed, tabulated, coded and themes were generated. Then, data under the ensuing themes were analysed using critical discourse *** data revealed how backyard chicken rearing and its associated practices, such as feed formulation, issues associated with biosecurity, marketability and sustenance of the sector, are influenced by political, economic and cultural factors, turning it into a complex discursive *** are political, economic and cultural factors that may act in juxtaposition in backyard chicken farming in Sri Lanka. The results of this study can be used to underpin policy formulation, taking into account the prevailing political, economic and cultural practices and beliefs of backyard poultry farmers.

Drawing on Judith Butler's theory of performativity and positioning approaches, this paper examines how asylum seekers actively assert agency in navigating and (re)constructing their subjectivities and identities within research interviews. The analysis explores the power dynamics inherent in the interview setting and broader public discourse, revealing how asylum seekers engage with and respond to these forces. Rather than being passive subjects of discourse, they employ performative-positioning acts to negotiate power structures and assert control over their self-representations. By analyzing interview data, this study highlights the dynamic interplay between power, discourse and agency in the ongoing construction of identity.

The discursive construction of terrorism in the media allows and limits possible policy responses. These constructions help set the precedent for modes of intervention and regularisation by the state by locating potential terrorists within the logic of security. Such a logic was a trademark of the so-called War on Terror and continues to be deployed around the world. This article examines the normative carceral discourse at play in the construction of terrorist perpetrators in Aotearoa New Zealand. Using the 2021 LynnMall terror attack as a case study, it investigates the limits of the New Zealand security dispositif that worked to construct the LynnMall attacker as a lost cause, incapable of intervention or rehabilitation. Drawing on insights from discourse theory, and critical discourse/dispositif analysis, it examines the resonant force between media discourses and the state's security practices. Through an examination of national media coverage, court proceedings, and policy documents, it assesses the discursive conditions within which terrorist subjects are constructed for the public and regulated by the state. In doing so, it sheds light on the mutually reinforcing yet contradictory discourses of carceralism and border politics that inform contemporary security practices.
