Smart and safe self-adaption of connected devices based on discrete controllers

The Internet-of-things, which designates the interconnection of physical objects, is a growing research area with many challenges. One of these challenges is the management of failures and unforeseen situations when using connected devices in real world applications. To this end, the authors propose a self-adaptation framework to deal with changes and take into account storage, computational and communication constraints. Their self-adaptation framework relies on constraints expressed in terms of quality of service (QoS) and event-driven rules to specify control objectives. Internally, the framework generates labelled transitions systems and builds on the fly synchronous controllers to guarantee QoS properties. Moreover, their framework has capabilities to concurrently deal with dynamic control objectives, monitoring and self-adaptation. To prove the practicality of their framework, they present a healthcare case-study to remotely monitor a patient at risk of myocardial infarction recurrence. The objective control rules easily specify how wearable devices should coordinate their behaviours to ensure safety, resilience and health-awareness factors. The implementation of their framework is fully distributed and scalable and include their development of a wearable, remotely configurable, QoS aware cardiac activity sensor.

Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch With discrete controllers Using a Branch-and-Bound Algorithm: A Semidefinite Relaxation Approach

In this paper, a methodology to solve the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) in electric power systems (EPS), considering discrete controllers, is proposed. discrete controllers, such as the tap position of on-load tap changing (OLTC) transformers and switchable reactive shunt compensation, are optimized by the proposed method. A semidefinite relaxation (SDR) of the ORPD problem and a branch-and-bound (B&B) algorithm have been fully deployed. A new formulation is presented for the OLTC transformers to obtain a connected structure of the semidefinite programming (SDP) matrices. The customized B&B algorithm deals with the discrete nature of the binary control variables. Moreover, in order to enhance the convexification, valid inequalities called lifted nonlinear cuts (NLC) are implemented in the SDR. Additionally, a chordal decomposition technique is used to improve the computational performance. Finally, the B&B algorithm is used to solve the mixed-integer semidefinite programming problem. Several benchmarks have been used to show the accuracy and scalability of the proposed method, and convergence analysis shows that near-global optimal solutions are generated with small relaxation gaps.

EFFECTS OF discrete controllers ON THE STABILIZATION OF NATURAL CONVECTION INDUCED BY INTERNAL HEAT GENERATION IN A SHALLOW CAVITY

The stabilization of natural convection in a horizontal fluid layer with internal heat generation is studied numerically. The horizontal boundaries of the system are cooled isothermally. The system is stabilized using multiple sensors and discrete individually controlled actuators that modify the local intensity of the heating power. discrete controllers of finite length and spacing are located on the horizontal boundaries of the system. The thermal sensors are positioned at a given vertical height of the fluid layer. Upon using a feedback proportional control, the heating power of the system is modulated in order to postpone the onset of motion or annihilate the intensity of convection. Two-dimensional numerical simulations of the full governing equations are carried out. The results are used to determine the influence of the governing parameters, such as the length and spacing of the actuators, positions of the thermal sensors, and control gain on the control of the system. A correlation equation is proposed to predict the critical length of the actuators, above which the no-motion state cannot be maintained in the layer, as a function of the Rayleigh number.

The algorithmic analysis of control systems for large and distributed hybrid systems is considerably restricted by its computational complexity. In order to enable the verification of discrete controllers for such hybrid systems, this contribution proposes an approach that combines decomposition, model checking and deduction. The system under examination is first decomposed into a set of modules represented by communicating linear hybrid automata. The Assumption/Commitment method is used to to prove properties of coupled modules and to derive conclusions about the behavior of the entire system. The individual Assumption/Commitment-pairs are proven using established methods for model checking.

Concise discrete ZNN controllers for End-Effector Tracking and Obstacle Avoidance of Redundant Manipulators

Obstacle avoidance is usually an additional task for a redundant manipulator when the end-effector tracking task is performed, which guarantees the safety of the redundant manipulator. By formulating and combining the end-effector tracking task and the obstacle avoidance task using zeroing neural network (ZNN), in this article, a concise continuous ZNN (CZNN) controller is first proposed. To develop discrete controllers for practical control, a second-order discrete formula and a third-order discrete formula are introduced. Therefore, by utilizing two discrete formulas to discretize the CZNN controller, two concise discrete ZNN (DZNN) controllers are proposed. Detailed theoretical analyses guarantee the effectiveness of task formulations, CZNN controller, and DZNN controllers. In addition, some comparisons with existing studies are presented in details. Furthermore, three groups of simulative experiments on the basis of UR5 manipulator and two groups of physical experiments on the basis of Kinova manipulator are conducted to illustrate the effectiveness, superiority, and practicability of two DZNN controllers.

Applying differential dynamic logic to reconfigurable biological networks

Qualitative and quantitative modeling frameworks are widely used for analysis of biological regulatory networks, the former giving a preliminary overview of the system's global dynamics and the latter providing more detailed solutions. Another approach is to model biological regulatory networks as hybrid systems, i.e., systems which can display both continuous and discrete dynamic behaviors. Actually, the development of synthetic biology has shown that this is a suitable way to think about biological systems, which can often be constructed as networks with discrete controllers, and present hybrid behaviors. In this paper we discuss this approach as a special case of the reconfigurability paradigm, well studied in Computer Science (CS). In CS there are well developed computational tools to reason about hybrid systems. We argue that it is worth applying such tools in a biological context. One interesting tool is differential dynamic logic (dL), which has recently been developed by Platzer and applied to many case-studies. In this paper we discuss some simple examples of biological regulatory networks to illustrate how dC can be used as an alternative, or also as a complement to methods already used. A universal design chart for linear time-invariant continuous-time and discrete-time compensators

Recently, design charts were given for various conventional compensators. In particular, a design chart was developed for the phase lead-lag compensator to eliminate the trial-and-error nature of the design. In this paper, it is shown that a single universal design chart ran be generated for all the various types of conventional compensators. This chart allows compensator parameters to be determined readily and is applicable to the design of both continuous-time and discrete-time compensators. A detailed example is given to illustrate the use of the chart. This universal chart may be computerized for ease of design.

Advanced model based air path management using a discrete-angular controller in idle-speed context

This paper aims to present an original methodology to design a controller for the air path management considered as a nonlinear system that is presented as a periodic discrete Takagi-Sugeno (TS) model. A transformation is realized to translate the periodic behavior into a classic discrete model using the different sample times. The controller gains are obtained solving LMI problems with uncertainties. The presented results are illustrated through the control of an Internal Combustion (IC) engine during the idle speed phase. Simulation results are provided to emphasize the utility of the methodology. © 2016

Active vibration control of thin plate using optimal dynamic inversion technique

Geometrically non-linear von Karman plate vibrations are suppressed using optimal dynamic inversion technique. Two types of controller are considered, a continuous and finite discrete controllers in spatial domain to control the vibrations of the plate. Non-linear Finite Element (FE) method is used to transform the non-linear partial differential equations (PDE) into a set of non-linear algebraic equations and are solved. The non-linear PDE is directly used for controller design i.e. design-then-approximate (DTA) method is followed which ensures the stability and controllability of the system. The simuation study shows the effectiveness of controlling plate vibrations using continuous and discrete controllers. © 2016, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. In this work we present a design and implementation method of discrete variable gain controllers, which are used for regulating industrial systems. The design is derived from the classical discrete deadbeat response approach. The design is based simply on determining a variable gain for each discrete sample such to accomplish the regulation in finite steps equal the system order. The gain computation is performed numerically by solving a system of nonlinear coupled equations using one of the known evolutionary techniques, the genetic algorithm augmented with Newton-Raphson method. Two industrial control systems are considered to testify the designed controller for implementation. The efficacy of the proposed method for parameter variations is explored. Moreover, the results are compared with that based on a finite number of control steps.
