Snow depth and sea ice thickness in the Polar Regions are significant indicators of climate change and have been measured over several decades by ice-tethered buoys. However, sea ice temperature profiles measured by ice-tethered buoys are rarely used to infer snow depth and sea ice thickness owing to the lack of automatic discrimination algorithms, restricting the use of the data for sea ice thermodynamics studies. In this study, snow depth and sea ice thickness were retrieved through the measurements of sea ice temperature profiles using discrimination algorithms of the change point and the maximum likelihood detection methods. The data measured by 50 ice-tethered buoys were used to evaluate the accuracy of the results determined by the algorithm. Influences on the seasonal sea ice thermodynamic state, vertical interval of temperature sensors on the buoys, and initial ice thickness on the estimation errors were also evaluated. The performance of the discrimination algorithm for the data from the Arctic and Antarctic regions was also compared. There were no identifiable differences between the estimation errors from the Arctic and Antarctica. Increases in both the interval of the temperature sensors and the initial ice thickness enlarged the error for the estimation of ice thickness. A procedure developed in this study strengthens the potential application of measurements from the ice-tethered buoys only with the measurements of the vertical temperature profile of the layer of snow-covered ice, but not the measurements of ice basal and surface positions using acoustic sounding.

Due to the wide popularity of Wireless Networks tremendous applications are emerging and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) has gained attention by both research and industry communities. The wide spread deployment of WLAN has also brought new challenges to security and privacy. Anomaly detection is fast becoming a key element of intrusion detection systems, in which perturbations from normal behavior suggest the presence of intentionally or unintentionally induced attacks, faults, defects, etc. Accurately detecting such anomalies has become an important problem for the network community. We need to distinguish anomalies that change the traffic either abruptly or slowly. While a good amount of research has been done for fixed wired networks, not much research has been done in this area for wireless networks due to lack of a good data set. Hence we developed a discrimination algorithm using correlation coefficient to detect anomalies in the Wireless traffic and demonstrated the effectiveness.

BACKGROUND Inappropriate shocks (IS) continue to have a major negative impact on patients implanted with defibrillators. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to assess IS reduction with the PARAD+ discrimination algorithm in a general population implanted for primary or secondary prevention. METHODS ISIS-ICD (Inappropriate Shock Reduction wIth PARAD+ Rhythm discrimination-Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) was a 2-year international, interventional study in patients implanted with a dual implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) or triple-chamber defibrillator (cardiac resynchronization therapy-defibrillator [CRT-D]) featuring PARAD+. IS (shocks not delivered for ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation) were independently adjudicated. The primary endpoint was percentage of IS-free patients at 24 months. Primary and worst-case analyses of annual incidence rates of patients with >= 1 IS, overall and per defibrillator type, were conducted. RESULTS In total, 1013 patients (80.7% male;age 67.1 +/- 11.4 years;68%/30%/2% primary/secondary/other indication) were enrolled and followed for a median of 552 days (interquartile range 354;725). Of 993 analyzed patients programmed with PARAD+, 14 had >= 1 IS, corresponding to a percentage free from IS of 98.1 0 /0(95% confidence interval [CI] 96.8%- 98.9%). Annual incidence rates (per 100 person-years) of patients with IS were 1.0 (95% CI 0.59-1.69) and 2.1(95% CI 1.46-3.02) in the primary and worst-case analyses, respectively. In ICD patients, rates were 1.2 (95% CI 0.68-2.23) and 2.3 (95% CI 1.473.53), and in CRT-D patients 0.59 (95% CI 0.19-1.83) and 1.8 (95% CI 0.93-3.44) per 100 person-years. CONCLUSION The annual rate of defibrillator patients with IS using the enhanced PARAD+ discrimination algorithm alone ranged from 1.0 to 2.1 per 100 person-years in a general population implanted for primary or secondary prevention.

Evaluating the Performance of SVM in Dust Aerosol discrimination and Testing its Ability in an Extended Area

The Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) has been run more than five years, and one of its payloads-the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP)-can offer global atmospheric vertical profiles, resulting in it being widely used in aerosol research. Because the Lidar ratio is an important parameter for aerosol parameter retrieval and the choice of the Lidar ratio needs confirm the type of layers (aerosol or cloud), the data process cannot do without accurate and efficient aerosol and cloud classification. Initially, we found the classification errors existed in PDF version 1 data, so we introduce the SVM classifier to improve the accurate of thick dust and cloud classification. Despite NASA issued the PDF version 2 and improve the correct rate greatly, but we cannot ignore SVM advantages. Therefore in this paper, to continue the former study, we will not only validate the feasibility of this method (especially in dust source areas), but also make a thorough study of classification result effected by different feature vectors and samples. Through the accuracy testing we found, with the increase of the number of samples, SVM have the better result, and the feature space which include depolarization ratio have the more stable result. Though we validated the advantage of SVM, but if we want to use this algorithm in global scale or the whole process of dust deposition, there are still some improvements we need to do. To obtain the thinking of algorithm revision, we using MODIS, HYSPLIT, and CALIPSO products in a dust storm and observe its transmission, then the deficiencies of SVM can be found when compare with PDF version 2. Indeed PDF considered the regional variation, with this transmission of dust storm we need adjustment training samples and hyperplane of classifier. The diversity between SVM and PDF will be applied in the future research as the reference to make the new algorithm more robust and accurate.

A recursive identification algorithm for linear discrete periodic systems

The parameter identification problem of linear discrete period time-varying (LDPV) systems is studied in this paper and a two-step identification algorithm based on the recursive least squares principle is proposed. The recursive principle-based identification algorithm is mostly used to deal with the parameter identification of time-invariant systems. Combine with the cyclic reconstruction method, the LDPV system is converted to a linear time-invariant system. Then, based on this and combined with recursive least squares identification, a discrimination algorithm is proposed for the parameter estimation of the LDPV system. Finally, a numerical simulation example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Adaptive imaging spectrometer in a time-domain filtering architecture

We demonstrate an imaging spectrometer with 30 nm resolution that utilizes a novel time-domain filtering architecture. The architecture is based on a pixel by pixel integration of the interferogram signal mixed with reference waveforms. The system can be adapted in real time to discriminate between LED sources of different wavelengths, perform signal processing on the spectra, as well as discriminate between highly overlapping, broadband spectral features in a scene illuminated by a tungsten lamp. Unlike a conventional spectral signature discrimination system, which needs a dedicated computation subsystem running a discrimination algorithm, the time-domain filtering architecture embeds much of the computation in the filtering, which will aid the design of integrated miniaturized spectral signature discrimination systems. Scaled topometry in a multisensor approach

Reliable real-time surface inspection of extended surfaces with high resolution is needed in several industrial applications. With respect to an efficient application to extended technical components such as aircraft or automotive parts, the inspection system has to perform a robust measurement with a ratio between depth resolution and lateral extension of less than 10(-6). This ratio is at least 1 order beyond the solutions that are offered by existing technologies. The concept of scaled topometry consists of a systematic combination of different optical measurement techniques with overlapping ranges of resolution systematically to receive characteristic surface information with the required accuracy. In such a surface inspection system, an active algorithm combines measurements on several scales of resolution and distinguishes between local fault-indicating structures with different extensions and global geometric properties. The first part of this active algorithm finds indications of critical surface areas in the data of every measurement and separates them into different categories. The second part analyzes the detected structures in the data with respect to their resolution, and decides whether a further local measurement with a higher resolution has to be performed. The third part positions the sensors and starts the refined measurements. The fourth part finally integrates the measured local dataset into the overall data mesh. We have constructed a laboratory setup capable of measuring surfaces with extensions up to 1500 x 1000 x 500 mm(3) (in x, y, and z directions, respectively). Using this measurement system we are able to separate the fault-indicating structures on the surface from the global shape, and to classify the detected structures according to their extensions and characteristic shapes simultaneously. The specificity and reproducibility of general Schallamach pattern on heel part of rubber outsole

The Schallamach pattern is an acquired characteristic that is sometimes observed in crime scenes. However, the detailed pattern is not always visible, although its general pattern is still recognizable. To determine the discrimination power (DP) of the general Schallamach pattern (GSP), 55 outsoles worn by 33 volunteers were chosen for the experiment. Their prints were lifted after different intervals for six months using magnetic powder and self-adhesive lifters. After the prints were segmented into grids using Photoshop CS6, the presence/absence, angle, and density of the GSP were observed and measured in each grid. There were 18747 pairs of same-source samples among the 1447 dust impressions. An algorithm (weight combination of the presence/absence, angle, and density) was determined when a weight combination of the parameters considered recognized most of the same-source sample pairs. The results showed that the angles of the GSP on the left and right shoes were concentrated in the range [-5.5 degrees, -20.43 degrees] and [8.8 degrees, 24.97 degrees], respectively, and the DP was only 37.5%. With a simply optimized algorithm, the DP reached 54.82%, and the DP of sample pairs lifted within one day reached 79.04%. The study demonstrates that one can distinguish the Schallamach pattern on the heel part of the outsole without information regarding the presence/absence, angle, and density of patterns.

Discriminating Signals by Arrival Time under the Influence of Additive and Multiplicative Random Distortions

In this paper, the quasi-optimal and optimal algorithms are considered for discriminating the pulse signals by arrival time in the presence of the fast Gaussian modulating interference and additive Gaussian white noise. The case is examined when the time positions of the discriminable signals are a priori unknown and they take values from different clock intervals, so that such signals do not overlap in time. For the introduced algorithms, the analytical expressions are obtained for both the first two moments of the decision statistics and the probabilities of errors occurring while discriminating the signals by arrival time. By statistical simulation methods, one confirms the good agreement of these expressions with the corresponding experimental data presenting a wide range of values of the parameters of both the useful signals and the modulating interference. The comparison of the performance of the quasi-optimal and optimal algorithms in terms of the discrimination error probability is also carried out. It is established that the optimal algorithm can provide a significant gain in the discrimination quality.

Introduction: Dual-chamber implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) use discriminators to differentiate between supraventricular tachycardias (SVTs) and ventricular tachycardias (VT), the accuracy of which may depend on the type and method used. ICDs can combine rate branching of tachyarrhythmias according to their A:V relationship with two SVT-VT discriminators in each rate branch, using ANY (either) or ALL (both) logic. Our goal was to determine the optimal discriminator combination. Methods: Stored electrogram data from 596 spontaneous tachyarrhythmias from 203 patients with Photon DR ICDs were analyzed. Arrhythmias are first classified by the relationship of atrial and ventricular rates (rate branches V < A, V = A, and V > A) followed by additional discriminators: morphology and/or sudden onset if V = A;morphology and/or interval stability if V < A. Data were analyzed for all combinations of ANY and ALL logic. Results: Sensitivity and specificity were calculated for all spontaneous episodes in each analysis. V = A branch: ALL logic produced unacceptably low sensitivity, whereas morphology provided only similar sensitivity but better specificity than ANY logic. A > V branch: ANY logic provided adequate sensitivity. The combination of morphology only in V = A with interval stability or morphology (ANY logic) in V < A, provided the optimal result with sensitivity, specificity, positive, and negative predictive values of 99%, 79%, 87%, and 98%, respectively. Conclusion: SVT-VT combined discriminators strongly influence dual-chamber SVT-VT discrimination performance. In our study, optimal programming is morphology only in the V = A branch and morphology or interval stability (ANY) in the V < A branch. ALL logic should be used with caution due to loss of sensitivity.
