In contrast to the traditional centralized power system state estimation methods, this paper investigates the interconnected optimal filtering problem for distributed dynamic state estimation considering packet losses. Specifically, the power system incorporating microgrids is modeled as a state-space linear equation where sensors are deployed to obtain measurements. Basically, the sensing information is transmitted to the energy management system through a lossy communication network where measurements are lost. This can seriously deteriorate the system monitoring performance and even lose network stability. Second, as the system states are unavailable, so the estimation is essential to know the overall operating conditions of the electricity network. Availability of the system states provides designers with an accurate picture of the power network, so a suitable control strategy can be applied to avoid massive blackouts due to losing network stability. Particularly, the proposed estimator is based on the mean squared error between the actual state and its estimate. To obtain the distributed estimation, the optimal local and neighboring gains are computed to reach a consensus estimation after exchanging their information with the neighboring estimators. Then, the convergence of the developed algorithm is theoretically proved. Afterward, a distributed controller is designed based on the semidefinite programming approach. Simulation results demonstrate the accuracy of the developed approaches under the condition of missing measurements.

Networked distributed automatic generation control of power system with dynamic participation of wind turbines through uncertain delayed communication network

This study proposes a new distributed networked control (DNC) scheme and its stability analysis framework for automatic generation control in networked interconnected power systems with participation of wind turbine. It is assumed that the remote control signals are measured at locations away from the control site and exchanged among a non-ideal communication network with both time-varying delays and random packet dropouts. First, a model is proposed for large-scale DNC system consisting of subsystems, in which the states of each subsystem have their own time-varying delay and there are also delay and packet dropouts in their interconnection links. Then, a linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based method is proposed to design the distributed controller for better system performance. For this, a new Lyapunov-Krasovskii function is developed to conclude some LMI-based delay-independent theorem for designing control law. To evaluate the proposed method, a multi-area power system with participation of wind turbine is considered. Simulation results show the capability of the proposed approach to enhance the performance of networked power system in the presence of load perturbation among a non-ideal communication network with both time-varying delays and random packet dropouts.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a developing networking paradigm that advocates a complete overhaul of the conventional networking. SDN decouples the control logic from the data forwarding functionality;which traditionally are coupled on the network device. The coupling stifles innovation and evolution because the network often becomes rigid. Software Defined Wireless Sensor Networks (SDWSN) is also an emerging network paradigm that infuses the SDN model into Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). WSNs have inherent constraints such as energy, memory etc. which have been a major hindrance of their progress. The application of SDN model in WSN is set to cultivate the potential of WSNs in modern communication and to bring about the efficiency that the WSNs have not yet achieved due to their inherent constraints. SDN based networks are anchored on the central controller for functionality. As the network scale up, issues of scalability, reliability and congestion arises and for that a distributed controllers are proposed. This paper investigates the viability of a distributed control system for SDWSN. The test results conducted show that it is viable to deploy a distributed control system for SDWSN;however an improvement is needed on the efficiency.

The modular multilevel cascaded converter (MMCC) has been considered as a promising solution for integrating the utility-grade renewables to the medium-voltage (MV) power system. However, the implementation becomes difficult with the centralized control architecture as the cascaded numbers increase. This paper presents a distributed control technique for the cascaded converter, which significantly reduces the complexity and increases the flexibility to expand the system. Experimental results carried out on a 7-level star-connected cascaded converter are included to validate the proposed approach.

Centralized controllers commonly used in high-level synthesis often cause long wires and high load capacitance and that is why critical paths typically occur on paths from controllers to data registers. However, conventional high level synthesis has focused on the delay of datapaths making it difficult to solve the timing closure problem during physical synthesis. This paper presents a hardware architecture with a distributed controller, which makes the timing closure problem much easier. It also presents a novel high-level synthesis flow for synthesizing such hardware through datapath partitioning and controller optimization. According to our experimental results, the proposed approach reduces the controller and interconnect delay by 20.3-27.4% and the entire critical path delay by 6.6 similar to 10.3% with 0.2 similar to 13.3% area overhead. Even without area overhead, it reduces the critical path delay by 5.8 similar to 10%.

Offset Free Tracking Predictive Control Based on Dynamic PLS Framework

This paper develops an offset free tracking model predictive control based on a dynamic partial least square (PLS) framework. First, state space model is used as the inner model of PLS to describe the dynamic system, where subspace identification method is used to identify the inner model. Based on the obtained model, multiple independent model predictive control (MPC) controllers are designed. Due to the decoupling character of PLS, these controllers are running separately, which is suitable for distributed control framework. In addition, the increment of inner model output is considered in the cost function of MPC, which involves integral action in the controller. Hence, the offset free tracking performance is guaranteed. The results of an industry background simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed method.

A distributed Clustered Architecture to Tackle Delay Variations in Datapath Synthesis

Due to the necessity of handling unexpected events in execution time, e.g., to support process variations, new mechanisms for dealing with every possible behavior of the datapath must be developed. Conventional centralized controllers can only handle very few dynamic events. distributed controllers, on the other hand, are able to support every combination of events. These controllers are composed of several finite state machines, which are interconnected via a global coordinator. The use of this type of controller obliges to check the hazards between operations in run time, which entails some penalty in the controller complexity. In this paper, a new methodology for deploying a distributed controller over a set of clusters is presented. A register binding algorithm specially suited for distributed controllers has also been developed. It combines a clustering method and a least recently used policy to reduce the number of hazards in run time. Furthermore, our methodology allows the exploration of different solutions by tuning the input parameters of the binding algorithm. Several studies evaluating the execution time and area tradeoffs are presented to support our techniques. Results show that for some cases it is possible to reduce more than 50% the expected execution time, at the expense of a slight area increase.

This paper concerns the global cooperative output regulation problem for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems with unknown control directions and unknown exosystem. The communication among agents makes it difficult to implement the Nussbaum gain technique to handle the non-identical unknown control directions. Moreover, the unknown parameter in the exosystem, which cannot be easily handled by the estimators in existing results, makes our problem more intricate. To overcome these challenges, we employ a novel internal model candidate to develop a two-layer control scheme for an adaptive distributed controller design. Theoretic stability analysis is presented and a numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller. © 2016

In this paper, we propose a design method of distributed temperature regulators for an air conditioning system, which is modeled as a network system composed of second-order subsystems representing the dynamics of air conditioners and thermal diffusion among areas. In the proposed method, to make a distributed regulator design problem tractable, we consider confining the class of distributed controllers to that consisting of second-order subcontrollers, whose network structure is made identical to that of the controlled system. On the basis of this specialization, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition of stabilizing controller parameters. Furthermore, we show that the problem of distributed regulator design can be reduced to a problem of robust state feedback gain design, formulated as guaranteeing a control specification in terms of the H2- and H∞-norm. The efficiency of our distributed regulator design method is shown through a couple of numerical simulations. © 2016
