Data fragmentation is one of the primary techniques that has been used in partitioning and developing distributed database systems (DDBs). database partitioning technique improves the performance of the system throughput and reduces the amount of irrelevant data to be accessed and transferred among different sites in DDBs. We propose a technique that splits the database relations into pair-wise disjoint fragments, which would be allocated to the DDBs sites during the process of allocation. This technique reduces the data transferred between the sites during the applications execution, minimizes the communication cost needed for processing applications, handles the database queries and meets their future needs, guarantees the ability of processing a given portion of a given transaction in all sites, and improves the applications speed and efficiency by minimizing the number of fragments to be accessed. We have also developed a fragmentation tool that is interactive, full functional and easy to use, based on our fragmentation life cycle algorithms to create the database segments and generate the minimum number of disjoint fragments. A case study and some results in tabular and graphical means will be presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the method.

In this paper, a new application of colour timed Petri net (CTPN) based methodology for distributed relational database queries modeling and corresponding simulation is addressed. This work, first based on parsed query definitions, converts logical query plans into designed CTPN models. Later, the improved cost-based functions are then established and appended to CTPN with a general purpose CPN simulator-Design/CPN to observe the thresholds of query operations. The propose CTPN can be used in the design phase as an experimental prototype to automatically simulate distributed database query processing which, in turn, may considerably reduce the load of developing the actual query processing software in the logical design phase of a distributed database system. Also, since all the essential details of query processing in CTPN have been simulated, the results of this study can be closely related to real world applications.

While some two-tier application is a valid approach for distributed applications, limitations have become apparent, particularly in large enterprises. Often these applications did not face the challenges and problem of applications integration, efficiency and scalability. Organizations that have a strong need for applications integration, efficiency, scalability and flexibility have begun to build applications following a new model that of distributed application components mostly in the form of three-tier architecture. This paper describes a research project in the area three tier distributed object multimedia database client-server system utilizing Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and Java technology. This system called Science Education Repository, System is a three-tier distributed Multimedia database System used to store and manipulate related information. The three-tier architecture has emerged to overcome the limitations of the two-tier architecture. This architecture extends the two-tier model by adding another tier in the Middle between the client and the server. This tier is called middleware. In this architecture, a middle tier has been added between the user system interface client environment and the database management server environment. The architecture is useful for an effective distributed client/server design is needed that provides (when compared to the two tier) increased performance, flexibility, maintainability, reusability, and scalability, while hiding the complexity of distributed processing from the user.
