In this paper, we propose an authorization model for distributed databases. Multiple object granularity of authorizations, such as global relations, fragments and attributes, are supported. Administrative privilege can be delegated from one subject to another to provide decentralized authorization administration. Authorization propagations along both the relation fragmentation tree and the subject group-subgroup hierarchical tree are also considered. Further more, conflict resolution policy is provided that supports well controlled delegations and exceptions. Overall the system provides a very flexible framework for specifying and evaluating the authorizations in distributed database systems.

This paper considers the interoperability and information sharing between health care providers. It proposes a distributed Peer-to-Peer (P2P) based framework that enables health operators of different hospitals to share and aggregate clinical information about patients and therapy effects. Patient records are mapped into a simple XML-based meta-Electronic Patient Record (meta-EPR). The meta-EPR is not a standard EPR proposal, but it is a lightweight data structure defined to contain relevant and aggregate information extracted from the different EPRs adopted by each hospital. Hospital operators formulate queries against meta-EPR schema;queries are then distributed to the connected hospitals hosting meta-EPR instances, through a P2P infrastructure. The presented framework has been fully implemented in a system called SIGMCC, which offers an Application Programming Interface (API) for query formulation, data loading and updating. As a case study, an application of the proposed metaEPR to the cancer medical domain has been developed. Finally, SIGMCC implements a view mechanism to allow personal (patient) information protection against unauthorized users. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This brief documents experimental results using a deterministic dynamic nonlinear system for load balancing, previously reported by Tang et al. in a cluster of computer nodes used for parallel computations in the presence of time delays and resource constraints. While previous publications by the authors have provided theoretical analysis of this load-balancing strategy using an idealized model, and have documented experiments using a simulated database, experimental results using a complete database for DNA profiles are documented here. Evaluation of the proposed load-balancing strategy using an actual database was critical because of several characteristics of the database that cannot be accurately captured using either a simulation model or database, including the variation in times required for the database to perform search operations, the time-varying and task-dependent computational load the database imposes upon each node of the parallel computer, and the time-varying network traffic imposed by both the communication of database search requests and results, mixed with the traffic generated by the load-balancing strategy. Although the load-balancing strategy can be represented in a relatively straightforward manner using mathematics, its implementation is by necessity an approximation to its mathematical description. The reported experimental results serve to validate the superiority of using the controller based on the anticipated work loads to a controller based on local work loads, which has been predicted with experiments using a simulated database and documented in prior publications. The experiments demonstrate the efficacy of the load-balancing strategy using an anticipated pattern of work loads and provide support for scalability of the approach.

We propose an information sharing system (called InfoShare) which is a set of multiple hybrid peer-to-peer (P2P) networks logically connected to a cooperative server. The design goal of the system is to form a multipurpose distributed database to share various kinds of information distributed on the campus and to access to the Internet website. Each of peers in the campus submits metadata of its own files to a meta-server (called information server) that forms a local database. As each local database may classify those information into different categories, the cooperative server plays an important role to succeed in reconciling paradox among them. When a certain peer retrieves information from the system, the information servers that have metadata included in the query cooperatively search target files. Consequently the peer gets the target file directly from another peer or a website. InfoShare also has a cache mechanism for well-referred files as a countermeasure taken to avoid peer's leaving. Our experimental results show that InfoShare has an excellent retrieval response time and can be effectively adaptable to many applications of campus information sharing.

This paper presents a coordinated design of power automation platform for integrating the various power automation sub-systems. It closely follows the IEC standards (IEC61970, IEC61968, IEC61850) and meets the high demands on operation performance, reliability, expandability, openness and security of modern power system control and management. The design introduces two new concepts: Operation Oriented Architecture (OOA) and Multiple Redundancy, or 1xM redundancy. It also includes a high speed open database connection to various RDBMS databases and an open interface layer to different computer operating systems. The resulting approach from this research is referred to as the selective data replication system. With this system, the data that has been updated by a data provider is captured and batched into messages known as update notifications. Server redundancy technology solves the problem of availability and the performance bottleneck in the traditional distributed environment, and at the same time presents a new challenge to the system management. A kind of constituting principle and working model of a distributed database server system (DDSS) is presented in this paper. To overcome the weakness of dynamic scalability of redundancy resource in configuration management of the present redundancy server system, aiming at the server DDSS (every service in the system is abstracted to an object class in the model, and multi-instance of the same object class redundantly serving each other is proposed), the configuration management of redundancy resource is discussed, and adaptive configuration management policy based on mobile agent technology is proposed. With the precondition of ensuring the system availability, the system performance is improved and the resource waste is reduced. In ACM, by defining award-penalty function (as for static configuration) and user request arriving rate (as for dynamic configuration) which is the gist of configuration, redundancy instances is added or deleted dynamically. Finally, the algorithmic performance is analyzed and tested, and compared with traditional algorithm.
