The paper presents and discusses a universal client/server object-oriented patient database system for clinical and personal applications. The developed system makes it possible to manage all patient specific data in the unified way by means of object-oriented representation of heterogeneous medical data, which include patient details, examination results and doctor visits history. The presented implementation includes a database server and a universal client application, which serves as a container for manifold medical applications that require database services. This approach enables to simplify drastically the implementation of database support in client applications and to put the main computational burden on the container application, which communicates with its clients by means of defined interface protocols.

The data distribution is a critical issue in distributed database design. It has been proved that it is a NP-hard problem. An efficient data distribution must consider the usability and reliability of the distributed data, the distribution of working load and the storage capacity of the nodes. We propose a 0-1 programming method for this problem. In our optimization model, the redundant data distribution and the storage capacity of the nodes are considered. Due to the advancement in the Information Technology, different kind of companies with heterogeneous needs have had the necessity to cooperate among them to get more benefit in a continuos changing market. That is heterogeneous e-business. In order to cope with such kind of e-business, a platform which can effectively realize heterogeneous needs, real time, flexibility and fault-tolerance is needed. This paper focuses on the database field that is indispensable for the e-business. Thus, it proposes Autonomous Decentralized database System, which is composed of two techniques. In the first one, the concept of Allowable Volume (AV) is introduced, while in the second one, a Mobile Agent (MA) that adjusts the AV of each site is shown. Since the MA is always moving among the sites, and each site can always negotiate AV with the MA autonomously, the system can realize assurance. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed system is shown by simulation.

This article addresses the performance of data replication protocol in terms of data availability and communication costs. Specifically, we present a new protocol called Three Dimensional Grid Structure (TDGS) protocol, to manage data replication in distributed system. The protocol provides high availability for read and write operations with limited fault-tolerance at low communication cost. With TDGS protocol, a read operation is limited to two data copies, while a write operation is required with minimal number of copies. In comparison to other protocols. TDGS requires lower communication cost for an operation, while providing higher data availability.

ParcelCall bridges gaps in today's Track & Trace (T&T) technology. Shipments are monitored continuously with positional accuracy by the means of satellite navigation systems. ParcelCall's backbone is an Internet connected network of goods tracing servers distributed at exchange points and mobile logistics servers on the respective transport services. This network enables a carrier interoperable T&T and combines the carriers' legacy IT-systems with a global logistics network. ParcelCall thereby provides both the consignor and consignee with proactive information for optimal consolidation to enhanced transport and delivery efficiency. The next step will be a seamless extension of ParcelCall into manufacturing supply chain management thereby enabling life cycle T&T of products and their components.

PostgreSQL is an advanced Object-Relational DBMS supporting SQL constructs and accessible with standard protocols. Its object-oriented features qualify it for managing biomedical data and it is freely available to the community vis the open-source philosophy. Unfortunately the current available version does not support any database distribution feature. The aim of the present work was to develop specific procedures In order to extend original potentials of PostgreSQL ORDBMS and make it able to manage distributed databases by means of asynchronous replication. Particular attention was devoted to conflict resolution rules, including several procedures with different degrees of restrictiveness and even giving the end user the possibility to write user-defined conflict resolution procedures, The replication system was tested at the IRCCS "E, Medea", an Italian Scientific and clinical research Institute spread over 5 sites in different geographical locations, The testing system was developed with the purpose to make clinical data collected by Epileptology Units in each site available to all branches, without having to care for their physical distribution, The proposed replica procedures manage only traditional (non-binary) data types because of the very different storage model of large objects. Since large objects are very common for treatment and storage of biomedical data, we are currently working on an improved version of the replica engine that allows large objects to be replicated.

Information integration systems provide facilities that support access to heterogeneous information sources in a way that isolates users from differences in the formats, locations and facilities of those sources. A number of systems have been proposed that exploit knowledge based techniques to assist with information integration, but it is not always obvious how proposals differ from each other in their scope, in the quality of integration afforded, or in the cost of exploitation. This paper presents a framework for the comparison of proposals for information integration systems, and applies the framework to a range of representative proposals. It is shown that proposals differ greatly in all of the criteria stated and that the selection of an approach is thus highly dependent on the requirements of specific applications. A currently relevant research field in information sciences is the management of nontraditional distributed multimedia databases. Two related key issues are to achieve an efficient content-based query by example retrieval and a fast response time. This paper presents the architecture of a distributed image retrieval system which provides novel solutions to these key issues. In particular, a way to quantify the effectiveness of low level visual descriptors in database query tasks is presented. The results are also used to improve the system response time, which is an important issue when querying very large databases. A new mechanism to adapt system query strategies to user behavior is also introduced in order to improve the effectiveness of relevance feedback and overall system response time. Finally, the issue of browsing multiple distributed databases is considered and a solution is proposed using multidimensional scaling techniques.
