From historical map to online 3D recreation: the 1861 cadastral map of Horta (Barcelona)

The recent study and classification of over 200 cadastral maps created in the nineteenth century in Catalonia have provided a valuable source of information about the agricultural landscape country's past, but by linking them with data recorded in tax books known as amillaramientos, it is possible to gain a better knowledge of the past. By applying this method to the 1861 cadastral map of Horta and its corresponding amillaramiento, a planimetric map showing the land use distribution in the town was created. The resulting land use map was subsequently overlaid on top of a digital elevation model to create 3D visualizations which show the altitudinal distribution of crops and other features. Finally, the article explores a way of distributing the results online, making them accessible to the public and increasing the research impact of future findings. Therefore, the method described in this article allows the systematic recreation and distribution of past landscapes by using Catalan cadastral maps of the nineteenth century, something which can help enrich the scientific knowledge of many disciplines.

The rapidly emerging of Mobile Internet and the constantly increasing of wireless subscribers' number bring new opportunities and challenges to geographic information sharing and accessing. Current Web giss, which are accessed by using connection based approaches, are very inefficient in fulfilling the requirements of gis applications under open, dynamic, heterogeneous and distributed computing environments such as (Mobile) Internet. In this paper, we propose a new system for accessing and sharing distributed geographic information by using mobile agent and GML technologies, in which mobile agents are used to overcome the limitations of traditional distributed computing paradigms in (mobile) Internet context and GML is adopted as the common format for spatial information wrapping and mediation, while SVG is used as a web-map publishing format that can be processed and displayed in Web browser. A prototype is implemented, which demonstrates the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

Agent technology is applied into constructing distributed gis. A distributed gis-oriented multi-agent system named as Geo-Agents is designed and implemented. Firstly, the classification, structure and features of agent in distributed gis are analyzed. There are four types of gis Agent: system management agent, gis function agent, interface agent and GUServer. Every gis Agent is a synthetic entity that consists of control subsystem, functional subsystem, communication subsystem, human-computer interface and data resource, and every gis Agent is determinate, independent, autonomous, interactive and initiative. Secondly, a message mechanism is used to provide communication and coordination between gis Agents, and a set of Geo-Agents message types are designed according to the properties of gis and Agent. After that, the architecture and network distributed model of Geo-Agents are proposed. At last, two sample uses of Geo-Agents are explored: agent-based spatial information navigation and spatial decision-support system.

To make the diverse organizations access the massive distributed heterogeneous spatial data easily, we build a Spatial Data Grid in peer-to-peer way, which composed of several spatial datacenters distributed in different agencies. Given a query, which often a range query in spatial application, the query parser will decompose the global query into several sub-queries and disseminate them to the peers who take responsibility for storing data of that area. In order to accelerate the query dissemination process, we utilize distributed index to locate object more quickly and accurately. We propose an adaptive indexing mechanism, Fully distributed R-Tree Index, which is appropriate for efficient range query dissemination. It composes of two layers, on top of which is the spatial range of each peer. The under layer stores part of the R-Tree of each peer's neighbors, which can be adjusted according to the capacity of peer. There is no centralized control on top of the entire system, and it could adaptive to the environment change.

In our Mobile-GPS system, a much more wider range of client devices are supported with gis/GPS applications, including traditional desktop contexts and mobile computing devices used wireless link technology. The use of Multi-Agent, Mobile-Agent and CORBA technology can implement distributed gis and be in favor of overcome bottle-neck of CPU and bandwidth of mobile end devices and offer system flexibility and extensibility both on the server side and client side. The implementation of cooperation and adaptability of Multi-Agent, Mobile-Agent and the architecture of CORBA subsystem are described in detail.

In our previous work, agent-oriented computing has been used to increase the effectiveness of users in complex application domains of GPS/gis applications in PDA and smart phone, which use wireless link technology and WindowsCE OS. In this paper, our Mobile-gis system is expanded into handheld devices with J2ME -MIDP kernel, wider range of client devices is supported with gis/GPS applications. A kit (Map DB Manager) to convert various formats gis data of Arcgis, Mapinfo into our GML document is implemented and Geospatial data in GML is described in detail At the same time, we provide a peer to peer multi-agents mechanism on mobile gis application, which can distinguish among adaptivity to the specific devices and to user's profile, and realize the Geo-Data access and update flexibly.

With the increasing maturity of distributed object technology,CORBA, NET and EJB are universally used in traditional IT field. However, theories and practices of distributed spatial database need farther improvement in virtue of contradictions between large scale spatial data and limited network bandwidth or between transitory session and long transaction processing. Differences and trends among of CORBA, NET and EJB are discussed in details, afterwards the concept, architecture and characteristic of distributed large-scale seamless spatial database system based on J2EE is provided, which contains gis client application, web server, gis application server and spatial data server. Moreover the design and implementation of components of gis client application based on JavaBeans, the gis engine based on servlet, the gis Application server based on gis enterprise JavaBeans(contains session bean and entity bean) are explained. Besides, the experiments of relation of spatial data and response time under different conditions are conducted, which proves that distributed spatial database system based on J2EE can be used to manage, distribute and share large scale spatial data on Internet. Lastly, a distributed large-scale seamless image database based on Internet is presented.

Research and education are two activities closely related to the management of scientific knowledge. To support the increasing difficulty to manage information, many initiatives have tried to come out with solutions. Since most part of the knowledge may be somehow related to space, Scientific Geographical Information Infrastructures (ScGIIs) are created to support research and educational activities, and disseminate its results into society for further reuse or investigation. Stakeholders, but specially users, are the main actors in the use of such infrastructures. Therefore, this study takes the User Centred Design (UCD) methodology, which tries to discover the potential demand and requirements for a product, before generating a supply, which may otherwise not be adapted to the user needs. This research focuses over the first phase of the UCD, consisting into a requirements analysis. Since at present the Balearic Islands University (UIB) (Spain) is developing a ScGII for the own university. This research takes that example as a case study to investigate how users and stakeholders can collaborate in the design and development of a ScGII. To do so, the research does a deep study over the critical aspects that should be approach to define a ScGII, which are mainly their components stakeholders, technology, geospatial information, standards, organizational framework and finances. Then it goes through a long list of other existing ScGIIs and systems that serve the same function, like GI repositories or geospatial grids. When focusing over the case study, the research studies the socio economic context of the Balearic Islands Society and state of affairs within the UIB's ScGII project. This research takes the survey as a main methodology to approach the requirements analysis study over students, teachers and researchers, who are intended to be the users of this infrastructure. Data Grid provides distributed resources for dealing with large-scale applications that generate huge volume data sets, while the Peer-to-Peer architecture provides the maximum autonomy and scalability. Combing their features, we have built a P2P Data Grid prototype as a high-available coordinated platform for storing, processing, and mining the massive Geospatial data. Replication strategy is the most challenging issue in building such systems, which includes the replica production, dissemination, location, selection, updating, synchronization and consistency maintaining. We exploit the replica production based on the spatial content, the replica dissemination based on DHT and directory, and the replica selection and maintenance problem in this paper.

An Efficient Group-Based Replica Placement Policy for Large-Scale Geospatial 3D Raster Data on Hadoop

Geospatial three-dimensional (3D) raster data have been widely used for simple representations and analysis, such as geological models, spatio-temporal satellite data, hyperspectral images, and climate data. With the increasing requirements of resolution and accuracy, the amount of geospatial 3D raster data has grown exponentially. In recent years, the processing of large raster data using Hadoop has gained popularity. However, data uploaded to Hadoop are randomly distributed onto datanodes without consideration of the spatial characteristics. As a result, the direct processing of geospatial 3D raster data produces a massive network data exchange among the datanodes and degrades the performance of the cluster. To address this problem, we propose an efficient group-based replica placement policy for large-scale geospatial 3D raster data, aiming to optimize the locations of the replicas in the cluster to reduce the network overhead. An overlapped group scheme was designed for three replicas of each file. The data in each group were placed in the same datanode, and different colocation patterns for three replicas were implemented to further reduce the communication between groups. The experimental results show that our approach significantly reduces the network overhead during data acquisition for 3D raster data in the Hadoop cluster, and maintains the Hadoop replica placement requirements.
