A Blockchain-Based Framework for distributed agile software development

distributed agile software development (DASD) is the most important approach for the modern software industry that allows geographically independent software development. In the past, different tools and frameworks were proposed to solve communication and collaboration issues in DASD but they lacked transparency, trust, traceability, and security. These shortcomings resulted in project failure or overdue, customer dissatisfaction, project deal cancellations, and payment clashes between the customers and development teams. This paper addresses and overcomes the major issues of transparency, trust, security, traceability, coordination, and communication in DASD by embedding blockchain technology. We have proposed a novel blockchain-based framework named as agilePlus which executes the smart contracts on a private ethereum blockchain for acceptance testing, secure payment, verification of developer's payment requirements, and automatic payment distribution into the digital wallets of development teams. The execution of these smart contracts automatically assign penalties to the customers for late or non-payments and also to the developers for overdue tasks. Moreover, we have also solved the blockchain's scalability challenge in agilePlus by utilizing Interplanetary File System (IPFS) as off-chain storage. Lastly, experimental results prove that the proposed framework enhances transparency, communication, coordination, traceability, security and solves trust issues of both customers and developers in DASD.

Identification and Classification of Risk Factors in distributed agile software development

distributed agile software development (DASD) is an amalgamation of agile software development (ASD) with distributed software development (DSD). Although DASD integrates the speed benefits of ASD with the cost benefits of DSD, however, it brings along various risk factors that arise due to the fact that both ASD and DSD works on a different set of principles. These associated risks must be addressed and managed well in time for the successful completion of the project. This paper reviews the current literature and presents the current challenges of Risk Management in the DASD environment. This paper also determines 71 risk factors associated with DASD and analyses them based on their causes and sources. Further, these risk factors are segregated into 11 different categories. Timely management of these risks may reduce the uncertainty of project failure in the DASD environment.

distributed agile software development (DASD) has gained much popularity over the past years. It relates to agile software development (ASD) being executed in a distributed environment due to factors such as low development budget, emerging software application markets and the need for more expertise. DASD faces a number of challenges with respect to coordination and communication issues. Task allocation in such an environment thus becomes a challenging task. Adopting proper task allocation strategy is crucial to overcome challenges and issues in DASD. Various studies highlight the challenges being faced by DASD and have proposed solutions in the form of framework or models. Knowledge models in the form of ontologies can help to solve certain issues and challenges by providing a proper representation of data that is shareable among distributed teams. Several ontologies with respect to task allocation exist. However, ontologies incorporating factors and dependencies influencing task allocation process in DASD are limited. An ontology representing the knowledge related to task allocation and coordination is important for proper decision making in organizations. Based on an in-depth literature review and a survey conducted among professionals in industry, this paper proposes an ontology, OntoDASD, that incorporates relevant factors and dependencies to be considered in task allocation and coordination process in DASD environment. The ontology facilitates team coordination through effective communication and task allocation by defining the concepts to share knowledge and information in an appropriate way. OntoDASD has been properly evaluated and validated by professionals in the field.

distributed agile software development (DASD) has become a prominent software development approach. Proper task allocation is crucial in DASD to avoid undesirable outcomes including project rejection by clients, unfavorable team attitudes, and project failure. Coordination and communication issues occur as businesses embrace the DASD environment more frequently to tap into global talent and knowledge while cutting development expenses. To overcome these challenges, efficient task allocation planning becomes a crucial success component in software project management. The purpose of this study is to utilize machine learning (ML) predictive algorithms to determine the most appropriate role for a given task, with the aim of assisting software managers in making task assignments more efficiently and effectively in DASD environment. Preprocessing steps applied to the dataset include data cleaning, normalization, and partitioning into training, validation, and test sets. Four model classifiers were used in the experiment: Random Forest, Decision Tree, K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN), and AdaBoost. The results showed that Random Forest outperformed the other classifiers in task allocation prediction, achieving an accuracy of 96.7 %, followed by K-NN (94.2 %), Decision Tree (93.5 %), and AdaBoost (93 %). The study demonstrates that ML models are effective in tackling task allocation issues in DASD settings, and the outcomes are promising. © 2024

Task allocation and coordination in distributed agile software development: a systematic review

Large software companies are facing issues at project management level to allocate and manage tasks in distributed agile software development environment. Teams are located in different cities or countries with different profiles and expertise. When those teams are expanding, it is becoming more time consuming and difficult to coordinate. In order to do a proper assignment of tasks to an individual or team, a number of factors have to be taken into consideration. The larger number of influencing factors identified, the more the task allocation process can be improved. In this paper, we have done a review on the existing publications for task allocation and coordination in distributed agile software development. The study shows that most research works are either related to coordination process in agile environment/distributed environments or task allocation process in agile distributed settings. Only few have investigated on factors or approaches considering both task allocation and coordination. A systematic literature review has therefore been conducted over Google Scholar to filter out the most relevant publications from year 2010 to 2019. Risk Aware and Quality Enriched Effort Estimation for Mobile Applications in distributed agile software development

Mobile application development has been a promising field in software Engineering (SE) for more than the last decade. It is growing rapidly due to an ever increasing popularity of smart phones. Due to benefits it offers, SE in general, is trending towards Agility based approaches and distributed development setups. These benefits include development cost reduction, predictability, visibility, changeability and availability of expertise in specialized domains due to offshore teams. Optimal deployment of resources has a key role in the success of a project. To this aim, accurate effort estimation is a vital activity. Effort estimation method should consider artifacts such as complexity of tasks and prior experience of team members in the project domain. Agility and distributed development are two dimensions that are currently changing the development philosophies and shaping the development team profiles. Due to lack of experience in these two dimensions and ever changing nature of mobile application domain, any effort estimation method suffers from uncertainty. Thus the accuracy of effort estimation methods is comprised. This work ranks dealing with this uncertainty as a major challenge. To address it, the uncertainty is translated to associated risk whose consideration contributes towards accuracy of effort estimation. Thus we improve on risk-agnostic effort estimation methods by classifying and including risks in effort estimation, especially those which arise due to agility and distributed development for mobile application domain. Classification helps to understand the risk types involved and enables to better estimate their impact. Other than risk, we also consider novelty level and type of a project. Another contribution of this work is inclusion of quality aspect in software development, without which effort estimation methods map to single effort values. This limitation does not allow trading-off between chosen quality levels and corresponding effort values.

Waste identification as the means for improving communication in globally distributed agile software development

agile approaches highly values communication between team members to improve software development processes, even though, communication in globally distributed agile teams can be difficult. Literature proposes solutions for mitigating the challenges encountered in these environments. These solutions range from general-level recommendations and practices to the use of communication tools. However, an approach covering the whole development process for identifying challenges, and improving communication in globally distributed agile development projects, is missing. In order to address this, we conducted a case study within a globally distributed agile software development project focused on using the concept of waste as a lens for identifying non-value producing communication elements. In order to achieve this, we constructed a waste identification approach through which we identified five communication wastes, and solutions to mitigate them. These wastes can help companies identify communication issues that are present in their development efforts, while the presented waste identification technique gives them a mechanism for waste identification and mitigation. This work contributes to the scientific community by increasing the knowledge about communication in globally distributed agile development efforts. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we propose a recommendation approach - TaskAllocator - in order to predict the assignment of incoming tasks to potential befitting roles. The proposed approach, identifying team roles rather than individual persons, allows project managers to perform better tasks allocation in case the individual developers are over-utilized or moved on to different roles/projects. We evaluated our approach on ten agile case study projects obtained from the *** repository. In order to determine the TaskAllocator's performance, we have conducted a benchmark study by comparing it with contemporary machine learning models. The applicability of the TaskAllocator was assessed through a plugin that can be integrated with JIRA and provides recommendations about suitable roles whenever a new task is added to the project. Lastly, the source code of the plugin and the dataset employed have been made public.
