distributed allocation finds applications in many scenarios including CPU scheduling, distributed energy resource management, and networked coverage control. In this paper, we propose a fast convergent optimization algorithm with a tunable rate using the signum function. The convergence rate of the proposed algorithm can be managed by changing two parameters. We prove convergence over uniformly-connected multi-agent networks. Therefore, the solution converges even if the network loses connectivity at some finite time intervals. The proposed algorithm is all-time feasible, implying that at any termination time of the algorithm, the resource-demand feasibility holds. This is in contrast to asymptotic feasibility in many dual formulation solutions (e.g., ADMM) that meet resource-demand feasibility over time and asymptotically.

Frequency channel allocation is a key technique for improving the performance of cellular networks. In this paper, we address the channel allocation problem for a 5G multi-cell system. We consider a heterogeneous network in which cellular users, micro-cell users, and device-to-device (D2D) communications coexist within the radio footprint of the macro cell. We maximize the aggregate transmission rate, exploiting channel diversity and managing both the inter-cell interference, typical of cellular networks and the intra-cell interference generated by the nonorthogonal transmissions of the small-cell and D2D users. By modeling the allocation problem as a potential game, whose Nash equilibria correspond to the local optima of the objective function, we propose a new decentralized solution. The convergence of our scheme is enforced by using a better response dynamic based on a message passing approach. The simulation results assess the validity of the proposed scheme in terms of convergence time and achievable rate under different settings.

Power-shaped advanced resource assignment (PSARA) for fixed broadband wireless access systems

We propose and investigate a new resource allocation technique for the downlink of time-division multiple access (TDMA)-based fixed broadband wireless access systems (FBWA) with full frequency reuse. This technique, named power-shaped advanced resource assignment exploits an appropriate set of power profiles which limit (or shape) the power transmitted in each slot of the frame and are suitably reused among the cells, in order to efficiently distribute the intercell and intersector interference inside the frame and to make it partially predictable. In systems where base stations assign radio resources in an uncoordinated fashion, this allows the allocation algorithm to assign time slots to users on the basis of the power required to fulfill a predefined carrier-to-interference ratio, since worst case interference can be suitably estimated;moreover, different degrees of protection against interference are provided across the slots to efficiently accommodate users with different location-dependent channel conditions. Simulation results for a typical cellular FBWA system show that this technique significantly improves the capacity with respect to other techniques recently proposed, e.g., the enhanced staggered resource assignment, even when they use power control. Moreover, an analytical framework useful to understand the concept of power shaping and to discuss some guidelines for the design of power profiles is provided.

Wireless LAN is becoming a pervasive wireless access technology that can be found in almost any mobile device such as laptops, PDAs, portable game consoles and mobile phones. Each of these groups of devices have a different set of requirements according to their intended use and applications but most of them share two main requirements: QoS support to satisfy applications' demands and power saving functionality to achieve an operating time according to users' expectations. IEEE 802.11e defines two centralized solutions in order to address these problems: Hybrid Coordination Channel Access (HCCA) for QoS and Scheduled Automatic Power Save Delivery (S-APSD) for power saving. The focus of our work in this paper is the analysis and evaluation of a proposed centralized scheduler that makes use of both aforementioned IEEE 802.11e QoS and power saving solutions. Our contributions are as follows: (i) Design and analytical modeling of a proposed centralized scheduler (DRA) that maximizes the minimum distance between the resource allocations with pseudo-polynomial complexity, (ii) Extensive performance evaluation of the QoS and power saving benefits of the Distribution proposal (DRA) as compared to a generic Grouping one (GRA), and (iii) Evaluation of the complexity and scalability of the proposal to assess its feasibility in practice. Multicast communication services will be one of the most promising future applications in both public B-ISDN and the Internet. Generally, multicast communication can be realized by forwarding information along tree-shaped route. In order to realize rapid multicast routing, it is suitable and realistic to restrict the number of copy nodes in calculating multicast route. However, even in this approach we need to adequately select the restricted number of copy nodes which satisfy the conditions of both priority for multicasting and geographical distribution at the same time. As for this problem, we propose two heuristic algorithms, basic version named "concurrent type" and improved version named "sequential type", by greatly developing the concept of "elastic network algorithm". In addition to setting all important parameters through fundamental simulation testing, performance of this tuned-up new algorithms is evaluated. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper addresses the problem of allocating pairwise-workloads in networked multi-agent systems, where the cost of each agent increases linearly with the workload the agent takes on, aiming for balancing the costs of the agents over the network. To achieve this goal, we propose a pairwise balancing algorithm following a decentralized mechanism to locally coordinate the pairwise-workloads within each pair and to guarantee the coordination against infeasibility. Theoretical analyses reveal that the proposed algorithm converges and leads to a refined allocation with less difference of costs. Simulation examples are performed as well to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

This paper addresses profit optimization through insourcing and outsourcing virtual resources (seen as VMs) for cloud infrastructure providers. A linear program is proposed to assist IaaS providers, involved in a cloud federation, in adjusting their hosting and cooperation decisions in response to their workloads and available resources. The proposed exact formulation takes into account the prices and quotas proposed by the federation members and the costs of resources and their networking to maximize providers revenues. The algorithm performance evaluation and the identified benefits show the conditions for profitable cloud federations and the efficiency of the proposed model in improving profit.

Motivated by recent development in networking and parallel data-processing, we consider a distributed and localized finite-sum (or fixed-sum) allocation technique to solve resource-constrained convex optimization problems over multi-agent networks (MANs). Such networks include (smart) agents representing an intelligent entity capable of communication, processing, and decision-making. In particular, we consider problems subject to practical nonlinear constraints on the dynamics of the agents in terms of their communications and actuation capabilities (referred to as the node dynamics), e.g., networks of mobile robots subject to actuator saturation and quantized communication. The considered distributed sum-preserving optimization solution further enables adding purposeful nonlinear constraints, for example, sign-based nonlinearities, to reach convergence in predefined-time or robust to impulsive noise and disturbances in faulty environments. Moreover, convergence can be achieved under minimal network connectivity requirements among the agents;thus, the solution is applicable over dynamic networks where the channels come and go due to the agent's mobility and limited range. This paper discusses how various nonlinearity constraints on the optimization problem (e.g., collaborative allocation of resources) can be addressed for different applications via a distributed setup (over a network).

Cloud computing is a steadily maturing large-scale model for providing on-demand IT resources on a pay-as-you-go basis. This emerging paradigm has rapidly revolutionized the IT industry and enabled new service delivery trends, including infrastructure exter- nalization to large third-party providers. The Cloud multi-tenancy architecture raises several management challenges for all stakeholders. Despite the increasing attention on this topic, most efforts have been focused on user-centric solutions, and unfortunately much less on the difficulties encountered by Cloud providers in improving their business. In this context, Cloud Federation has been recently suggested as a key solution to the in- creasing and variable workloads. Providers having complementary resource requirements over time can collaborate and share their respective infrastructures, to dynamically ad- just their hosting capacities in response to users' demands. However, joining a federation makes the resource allocation more complex, since providers have to also deal with co- operation decisions and workload distribution within the federation. This is of crucial importance for cloud providers from a profit standpoint and especially challenging in a federation involving multiple providers and distributed resources and applications. This thesis addresses profit optimization through federating and allocating resources amongst multiple infrastructure providers. The work investigates the key challenges and opportunities related to revenue maximization in Cloud federation, and defines efficient strategies to govern providers' cooperation decisions. The goal is to provide algorithms to automate the selection of cost-effective distributed allocation plans that simultaneously satisfy user demand and networking requirements. This paper proposes the system model for autonomous mobility-on-demand in order to monitor passengers’ transport demand and develop a management system operator. Technical innovations in autonomous mobility and mobile networks’ greater availability have enabled autonomous mobility as a service. The use of shared vehicles for mobility on demand has become increasingly common, and the development of autonomous air mobility has necessitated a more generous system to control the Urban Air Mobility on Demand (UAMoD) availability of vehicle resources.
