Blockchain and cloud computing are two of the main topics related to the distributed computing paradigm, and in the last decade, they have seen exponential growth in their adoption. Cloud computing has long been established as the main mechanism to test, develop, and deliver new applications and services in a distributed manner across the World Wide Web. Large data centers host many services and store petabytes of user data. Infrastructure and services owners rule the access to data and may even be able to change contents and attest to its veracity. Blockchain is a step towards a future where the user's data are considered safer, besides being public. Advances in blockchain-based technologies, now, support service provisioning over permissioned and private infrastructures. Therefore, organizations or groups of individuals may share information, service even if they do not trust each other, besides supporting infrastructure management tasks. This paper presents and evaluates models for assessing the availability and capacity-oriented availability of cloud computing infrastructures. It aims at running blockchain's distributed applications based on the Ethereum blockchain platform and the required expenses to perform service delivery in public and private infrastructures. Most of the obtained results also apply to other blockchains-based platforms.

Cloud computing applications have grown rapidly in the last decade, where many organizations are migrating their applications to cloud data center as they expected high performance, reliability, and the best quality of service. Data centers deploy a variety of technologies, such as software-defined networks (SDN), to effectively manage their resources. The SDN approach is a highly flexible network architecture that automates network configuration using a centralized controller to overcome traditional network limitations. This paper proposes an SDN-based monitoring algorithm to detect the performance anomaly and identify the bottleneck of the distributed application in the cloud data center using the support vector machine algorithm. It collects the data from the network devices and calculates the performance metrics for the distributed application components that are used to train the SVM algorithm and build a baseline model of the normal behavior of the distributed application. The SVM model detects performance anomaly behavior and identifies the root cause of bottlenecks using one-class support vector machine (OCSVM) and multi-class support vector machine (MCSVM) algorithms. The proposed method does not require any knowledge about the running applications or depends on static threshold values for performance measurements. Simulation results show that the proposed method can detect and locate the failure occurrences efficiently with high precision and low overhead compared to statistical methods, Naive Bayes Classifier and the decision tree machine learning method. Zookeeper a powerful, feasible approach to build distributed applications implementing open APIs that enables developers to apply their own powerful co-ordination primitives. The aim of this study is twofold i) To study the anatomy and life cycle of zookeeper and make use of as a role of high-performance coordination service for distributed applications ii) a case study was presented about Zookeeper implementations in the payment process where synchronization and coordination is not meet due to dual server implementation, where orders are placed through an estore application. Finally the potentiality of Zookeeper replications is considered to address reliability and performance issues.

The latest developments in mobile computing technology have increased the computing capabilities of smart mobile devices (SMDs). However, SMDs are still constrained by low bandwidth, processing potential, storage capacity, and battery lifetime. To overcome these problems, the rich resources and powerful computational cloud is tapped for enabling intensive applications on SMDs. In Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC), application processing services of computational clouds are leveraged for alleviating resource limitations in SMDs. The particular deficiency of distributed architecture and runtime partitioning of the elastic mobile application are the challenging aspects of current offloading models. To address these issues of traditional models for computational offloading in MCC, this paper proposes a novel distributed and elastic applications processing (DEAP) model for intensive applications in MCC. We present an analytical model to evaluate the proposed DEAP model, and test a prototype application in the real MCC environment to demonstrate the usefulness of DEAP model. Computational offloading using the DEAP model minimizes resources utilization on SMD in the distributed processing of intensive mobile applications. Evaluation indicates a reduction of 74.6% in the overhead of runtime application partitioning and a 66.6% reduction in the CPU utilization for the execution of the application on SMD.

Security plays a vital role in the design and practical deployment of distributed applications. All companies have to repeatedly spend considerable time, capital and effort on the implementation of the security mechanism for their applications, and the result is also unsatisfactory. Nowadays, more and more integrated security management tools are emerging. If we can properly use these tools in our practical applications, the development schedule of applications will be greatly cut down, the cost will be reduced considerably as well as the security of the applications can be guaranteed. In this paper, we investigate an integrated security management tool - ManageSecure, present a formal description of the healthcare system requirements. and then describe how to implement the healthcare system security objectives by means of ManageSecure. The result shows that the use of the integrated security management tool in the practice application is economical and feasible.

Checkpointing Algorithms for Fault-Tolerant Execution of Large-Scale distributed applications in Cloud

Cloud computing provides infinite resources and a suitable environment for the execution of large scale computing applications. However, it is also susceptible to frequent failures which can affect users as well as service providers adversely. Therefore, fault tolerance techniques are necessary for the reliable execution of applications in the cloud. This work presents checkpointing based fault tolerance protocols for two types of distributed applications. The first kind of applications is the Bags of Tasks (BoT) applications where an application comprises of a set of independent tasks that do not communicate with each other during execution. Hence, an uncoordinated checkpointing algorithm is proposed for fault tolerance of BoT applications. Subsequently, we consider large scale distributed applications composed of multiple tasks dependent on each other due to inter-task message passing. An uncoordinated checkpointing and message logging protocol is presented for this type of applications. The proposed protocols utilize storage at edge switches in a data center to reduce the bandwidth consumption for saving checkpoints and message logs. Simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed protocols provide an increased rate of successful recoveries from failures and cause lower resource overhead than other contemporary and related schemes.

Thermodynamic and economic analysis of a micro-combined polygeneration system coupled with solar energy and fuels for distributed applications

A novel micro-combined polygeneration system based on solar energy and fuels is designed with aim to simultaneously satisfy energy demands of electricity, heating and cooling in distributed areas. Integration solar radiation with conventional natural gas-fired power systems is conceived to eliminate existing disadvantages of low efficiency and high cost for fuel-only and solar-only plants. Thermodynamic and economic analyses are evaluated to explore performance of proposed systems with three working fluids. Energetic and exergic efficiencies are individually 0.839 and 0.4536, 0.8721 and 0.5852, and 0.8656 and 0.5825 for N-2-, He- and Ar-based micro-combined systems under specified power capacity of 100 kW. Solar collector field, compressor, turbine and combustion chamber exhibit four largest exergy destruction, followed orderly by heat exchanger, generator, condenser, evaporator, throttling valve and pump. Preliminary economic analysis indicates that levelized electricity costs of N-2-, He- and Ar-based micro-combined systems are 0.112, 0.103 and 0.101 $ kWh(-1) with corresponding payback periods of 4.563, 5.090 and 5.138 years. Parametric analysis reveals that five operating parameters (compression ratio, turbine inlet temperature, solar collector field outlet temperature, generator outlet temperature and split ratio) exert noticeable influence on thermal efficiency of micro-combined systems. In conclusion, proposed micro-combined polygeneration system achieves efficient conversation of thermal energy into electricity, heating and cooling at a rational energy utilization for distributed areas.
