The verification and analysis of distributed applications are difficult. They involve large combinational states, interactive network communication between peers, and concurrency. Some dynamic analysis tools can analyze the runtime behavior of a single-process application. However, they do not support the analysis of a whole distributed application, where multiple processes run simultaneously. Centralization is a general solution, which transforms multi-process applications into a single-process one that can be directly analyzed by such existing tools. In this paper, we adopt centralization as a general framework for analyzing distributed applications. We propose and solve the essential issue of a class version conflict during centralization. We also propose a clean solution for the shutdown semantics. We implement and apply our centralization tool to some network benchmarks. Experiments, where existing tools are used on the centralized application, support the usefulness of our automatic centralization tool. Centralization enables existing single-process tools to analyze distributed applications.

A non-invasive, cloud-agnostic approach is demonstrated for extending existing cloud platforms to include checkpoint-restart capability. Most cloud platforms currently rely on each application to provide its own fault tolerance. A uniform mechanism within the cloud itself serves two purposes: (a) direct support for long-running jobs, which would otherwise require a custom fault-tolerant mechanism for each application;and (b) the administrative capability to manage an over-subscribed cloud by temporarily swapping out jobs when higher priority jobs arrive. An advantage of this uniform approach is that it also supports parallel and distributed computations, over both TCP and InfiniBand, thus allowing traditional HPC applications to take advantage of an existing cloud infrastructure. Additionally, an integrated health-monitoring mechanism detects when long-running jobs either fail or incur exceptionally low performance, perhaps due to resource starvation, and proactively suspends the job. The cloud-agnostic feature is demonstrated by applying the implementation to two very different cloud platforms: Snooze and OpenStack. The use of a cloud-agnostic architecture also enables, for the first time, migration of applications from one cloud platform to another.

When web services are used to coalesce around the distributed applications, one prominent solution to manage and coordinate web services is the use of process management. Many researches have been done to deal with automatic discovery and composition issues of web services. However, the problem of how to run a process that is composed of distributed services is seldom considered. In this paper, based on our previous work the Smart Process-based application Model (SPM), we formalize Smart Process (SP) using algebra CCS, and discuss the benefits. In particular, we propose goal-based algorithms to run Smart Process.

This paper presents the design concept of multi channel based sensing application at the physical edge of IoT network. The presented approach is based on reference Fog computing model, where sensor devices are connected to the edge fog node enabling the implementation of distributed real-time sensing applications. The proposed concept implies that the sensor data processing is relocated to the connected fog node, reducing hardware and power requirements of the sensor device. The reference fog node architecture, as well as application layer services for data communication, aggregation and processing are also provided.

Jini technology makes it possible to move parts of software from a device to another as a solution to achieve flexible distribution. Accordingly, each part of software that could be useful if available for other applications may also be made available for them. This interesting feature is particularly useful if there are lots of services and users for them. Even though Jini is easy to implement when building new software, it should be made very simple in order to be attached to existing solutions without large modifications. Especially if different parts of the existing software already have clear functional roles, for example as a client and as a server. In this paper, a framework encapsulating Jini functionality is presented. The purpose is especially to offer an easy add-on implementation for existing solutions. However, the framework has also been seen as useful when building simple Jini applications from scratch. The framework does not allow great flexibility but it offers simplicity. All that the Jini distribution requires is started by only a few commands in the code. The framework also takes care of the class transfer through a simple HTTP server without further user intervention. The framework is demonstrated with a video camera example. In the example, a moving picture of a video camera attached to a server may be followed in any node of the local area network with minimal software requirements. A multipurpose remote controller application is made to act as a universal client for all the programs that are built using the framework.

This is due to difficulties in handling heterogeneous environments, complex configurations, synchronization, error probing, result maintenance and automation in distributed testing. This paper describes a practical testing framework that permits automated distributed testing of distributed systems and applications. The framework extends the capability of JUnit to support test execution over heterogeneous environments and complex configurations.

We present in this paper the detailed architecture of the replica localization module implemented inside the distributed Operation application Framework (DOAF). DOAF is a development framework designed to speed up the development and deployment of distributed applications. The replica localization module (PathFinder) provides standardized interfaces and default implementation for replica management and localization operations. Besides the localization and management of replicas, the replica localization module offers support for topics like secured connections and data transmission or malicious replica substitution. The PathFinder management and localization operations are designed to support system wide optimization techniques by deeply coupling them with the Optimizer module.

distributed applications that adapt as their environment changes are developed from self-managing, self-configuring and self-optimising behaviours. This requires constant monitoring of the state of the environment, and analysing multiple sources of events. Event correlation is the process of correlating monitored events from multiple sources for further analysis. It is essential that event correlation supports reliable event management with minimal delay. This paper describes the design and implementation of an event correlation architecture for adaptive J2EE applications. The architecture supports flexible configuration of event correlation in terms of the reliability and performance. This is especially useful in situations when multiple sources of events have different level of requirements for reliability and performance. We evaluate the performance overhead of this event correlation architecture and demonstrate its practical usage in a case study of an adaptive image server application.

Modern distributed systems are designed to tolerate unreliable environments, i.e., they aim to provide services even when some failures happen in the underlying hardware or network. However, the impact of unreliable environments can be significant on the performance of the distributed systems, which should be considered when deploying the services. In this paper, we present an approach to optimize performance of the distributed systems under unreliable deployed environments, through searching for optimal configuration parameters. To simulate an unreliable environment, we inject several failures in the environment of a service application, such as a node crash in the cluster, network failures between nodes, resource contention in nodes, etc. Then, we use a search algorithm to find the optimal parameters automatically in the user-selected parameter space, under the unreliable environment we created. We have implemented our approach in a testing-based framework and applied it to several well-known distributed service systems.

This paper aims to offer a potential solution to the traffic management problem. In order to achieve this goal we considered implementing a distributed simulator that brings together a great variety of traffic environments. By adjusting some set of parameters of the simulation, we can get an improvement on average waiting time for many crowded infrastructures, traffic fluency being a major criterion we take into account regarding the optimality of the solution. Our model incorporates a central monitoring unit that holds all the traffic information needed for the traffic lights to act in an adaptive way. © 2010 IEEE.
