The integrated computing system optical network has been viewed as a promising platform to support real-time distributed computing applications. For such a system involving so many heterogeneous computing and network resources, faults seem to be inevitable. Therefore, a fault-tolerant scheme is necessary to improve the availability of the integrated system. However, existing joint task scheduling schemes for real-time distributed computing applications generally do not consider the application availability issues when making scheduling decisions. In this paper, we develop an availability-aware joint task scheduling (AAJTS) scheme, by both taking into account availability improvement and timing requirements. The proposed scheme iteratively enhances the application availability under deadline constraint to protect data communication tasks from network link failures. Extensive simulations demonstrate the effectiveness and the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

An open architecture for transport-level protocol coordination in distributed multimedia applications

We consider the problem of flow coordination in distributed multimedia applications. Most transport-level protocols are designed to operate independently and lack mechanisms for sharing information with other flows and coordinating data transport in various ways. This limitation becomes problematic in distributed applications that employ numerous flows between two computing clusters sharing the same intermediary forwarding path across the Internet. In this article, we propose an open architecture that supports the sharing of network state information, peer flow information, and application-specific information. Called simply the coordination protocol (CP), the scheme facilitates coordination of network resource usage across flows belonging to the same application, as well as aiding other types of coordination. The effectiveness of our approach is illustrated in the context of multistreaming in 3D tele-immersion where consistency of network information across flows both greatly improves frame transport synchrony and minimizes buffering delay.

A Centralized Approach to the Logging Mechanisms of distributed Complex ERP applications

Complex software applications traverse a multitude of running or idling states that depend on their implementation phase (development, testing, debugging, and exploitation). The applications can be monitored by letting them produce descriptive messages, the corresponding data being logged and usually marked according to their meaning or severity (info, debug, warning, error and fatal). Our software platform (Crosweb) provides the generic tools for implementing complex Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications and has its component software modules divided into several levels, the main ones being responsible for the infrastructure, the data management, the business logic, and user interfaces. Any of the mentioned components can produce logging messages, and the reporting methods can vary according to the place they occupy in the software hierarchy. The physical location of each software component can differ, their running environments often being distributed across several computing systems connected via various communication protocols. All these factors add complexity to the logged data inspection process. The current paper presents a solution that centralizes the logging information issued by the Crosweb components for ensuring a better exposure of the associated information and for simplifying the solutioning of the reflected problems.

This paper presents a new animated 3D graphical object manipulator to improve the visualisation of distributed window-based collaborative 3D applications. By applying animation techniques to the user interface, the experience of multi-user interaction may be enhanced. A major problem associated with distributed collaborative 3D applications is that interactions among users may cause conflicts, and it may be difficult to convey what these conflicts are. In addition, there is a need for additional feedback when interacting with 3D objects in current workstation 3D virtual reality applications. A prototype application is presented in the paper to demonstrate this new animated manipulator.

The provision of telemedicine services involves integration of information, humun-machine and health care technologies, As different modalities of patient care require applications running on heterogeneous computing environments, distributed health care applications are a major issue in telemedicine. A distributed application integrates resources located at distant places through networking. These resources include diagnostic instruments, medical expertise, hospital care and other related administrative services In health rare applications. A workflow based methodology fur development and implementation of distributed health care applications is presented, The workflow methodology involves process modeling, workflow design and implementation, and system evaluation, Using the specific example of a distributed telecardiology application, issues related to workflow management are reviewed and a design methodology to develop a distributed telecardiology system is proposed. The ECC process includes;data acquisition;encoding, transmission and storage;pattern recognition and feature extraction;and diagnostic classification. The key identified elements of the workflow implementation are;the point of need user;the assessor In tie online diagnostic center;ECC;knowledge repositories;online specialist and the further care center. As illustrated through the telecardiology case study, the proposed methodology can be effectively used as a guideline to develop distributed health care applications In other telecare areas.

This paper describes Visual Obliq, a user interface development environment for constructing distributed, multi-user applications. applications are created by designing the interface with a GUI-builder and embedding callback code in an interpreted language, in much the same way as one would build a traditional (non-distributed, single-user) application with a modern user interface development environment. The resulting application can be run from within the GUI-builder for rapid turnaround or as a stand-alone executable. The Visual Obliq runtime provides abstractions and support for issues specific to distributed computing, such as replication, sharing, communication, and session management. We believe that the abstractions provided, the simplicity of the programming model, the rapid turnaround time, and the applicability to heterogeneous environments, make Visual Obliq a viable tool for authoring distributed applications and groupware.

This special issue includes a selection of the artefacts presented at the 18th International Federated Conference on distributed Computing Techniques (DiScoTec 2023), held at the NOVA University Lisbon (Lisbon, Portugal), in June 18-23, 2023. The federated conference included: COORDINATION 2023, the 25th International Conference on Coordination Models and Languages);DAIS 2023, the 23rd International Conference on distributed applications and Interoperable Systems;and FORTE 2023, the 43rd International Conference on Formal Techniques for distributed Objects, Components, and Systems. All the three conferences welcomed submissions describing technological artefacts, including innovative prototypes supporting the modelling, development, analysis, simulation, or testing of systems in the broad spectrum of distributed computing subjects. The artefact evaluation chairs have selected a subset of high- quality accepted artefacts to be invited for submission to this special issue. Following the revision process, nine artefacts have been accepted to be part of this special issue. The published contributions include different types of artefacts, including programming libraries, frameworks, as well as tools for the analysis, verification, and simulation of distributed systems.

Globus Toolkit Version 4： Software for Service-Oriented Systems

The Globus Toolkit （GT） has been developed since the late 1990s to support the development of serviceoriented distributed computing applications and infrastructures. Core GT components address, within a common framework, fundamental issues relating to security, resource access, resource management, data movement, resource discovery, and so forth. These components enable a broader ＂Globus ecosystem＂ of tools and components that build on, or interoperate with, GT functionality to provide a wide range of useful application-level functions. These tools have in turn been used to develop a wide range of both ＂Grid＂ infrastructures and distributed applications. I summarize here the principal characteristics of the recent Web Services-based GT4 release, which provides significant improvements over previous releases in terms of robustness, performance,, usability, documentation, standards compliance, and functionality. I also introduce the new ＂***＂ community development process, which allows a larger community to contribute to the development of Globus software.

Multi-cloud applications: data and code fragmentation for improved security

When deciding against outsourcing their data to the cloud, organizations often point to security as the primary reason. If cloud is not used as a passive storage only, but rather both the data and the code required for their processing are being outsourced, then the data privacy may get compromised in two ways: (i) in the storage if not being encrypted and (ii) during the processing through various execution-level attacks. Encrypting the data before outsourcing enhances their security while in the storage, but disables their processing in the cloud. On the other hand, if a cloud has the ability to decrypt the data before processing, then they remain vulnerable during the execution. In this paper, we present a paradigm for outsourcing both the data and the code to the cloud in a way that preserves data privacy, while still enabling their processing outside the organization. The paradigm leverages constraint-based data and code fragmentation and deploys these fragments to multiple independent computer clouds. We introduce several architectural patterns for secure computation in a multi-cloud environment, demonstrate the paradigm use, and examine introduced performance penalty on a simple application.
