Collaborative transmit beamforming using coherent distributed arrays is a method by which multiple wireless nodes synchronize their transmissions in order to synthesize a virtual antenna array. Assuming a high degree of inter-node synchronization in frequency, phase, and location, wireless transmitters can synthesize a beam with a power gain of N-2 towards any arbitrary direction. Using a planar model, we examine the use of global optimization algorithms to add additional beams or nulls to the transmit pattern of a distributed array. Using simulations, we show that adjusting the positions of array nodes can reliably create multiple side beams or nulls in desired azimuth locations. Simulated annealing and pattern search optimization methods are explored for both beam forming and nulling and are compared across the average side beam intensity, node displacement, and algorithm running time.

distributed sonar arrays that are coherently processed offer high gain over diffuse noise and target resolution but with minimal hardware. The low-cost and ad-hoc nature of these arrays make them flexible and easy to scale but it also brings additional calibration challenges. The positions of individual sub-arrays may only be known up to the accuracy of an on-board GPS device, which will in general be inadequate for beamforming. In this paper we present a distributed array position calibration method using a single, tonal moving source of opportunity. The distributed array is re-partitioned into uncalibrated sparse arrays, whose steering matrices are estimated using the ESPRIT algorithm. The source and sub-array positions are then jointly estimated with the aid of noisy AIS data. We show this method to be effective for a minimum of a single moving source consisting of just two tones.

Wirelessly coordinated distributed phased arrays show promise for a variety of communication and sensing applications. However, phase-coherent operation of distributed systems requires precise localization of the transmitting nodes in the array, which presents a challenge for internode links operating at microwave frequencies. Previous works have been dedicated to centralized localization schemes, but these systems are vulnerable to single-point failures under a variety of conditions. In this work, we demonstrate a decentralized approach to network localization using a spectrally-sparse and narrow-band two-tone waveform for range estimation and multidimensional scaling for network realization. We implement the approach using a six-node network of software-defined radios (SDRs) and demonstrate that the system obtains a mean localization error of 1.9 cm, supporting distributed beamforming at frequencies of more than 1 GHz.

This article deals with the run-time comparison between several algorithms (including the MPI_Alltoallv() function call) to perform the redistribution of arrays that are distributed in a block-cyclic fashion over a multidimensional processor grid. The generation of the communication messages to be exchanged by the processors involved in the redistribution is not taken into account. Rather we focus on the scheduling of those messages: how to organize the message exchanges into "structured" communication steps that will minimize communication overhead.

We consider the problem of separating speech sources captured by multiple spatially separated devices, each of which has multiple microphones and samples its signals at a slightly different rate. Most asynchronous array processing methods rely on sample rate offset estimation and resampling, but these offsets can be difficult to estimate if the sources or microphones are moving. We propose a source separation method that does not require offset estimation or signal resampling. Instead, we divide the distributed array into several synchronous subarrays. All arrays are used jointly to estimate the time-varying signal statistics, and those statistics are used to design separate time-varying spatial filters in each array. We demonstrate the method for speech mixtures recorded on both stationary and moving microphone arrays.

In this paper, generalized expressions for system gain in a coherent communication system are developed. In an ad hoc or distributed network, the transmit and receive operations can be coordinated at the RF level to produce an array gain, similar to a fixed antenna array;such formations are known as coherent distributed arrays. The system examined in this paper consists of two open-loop coherent distributed arrays: one transmitter array and one receiver array. The gain of the entire system containing both arrays is described by the coherent communication gain. The concept of group array factor, which is the multi-receiver extension of array factor, is also introduced. Group array factor allows for a characterization of gain independent from propagation model and properties of the individual transmitters and receivers. The univariate optimization problem of maximizing group array factor as a function of transmitter array beam angle in the azimuth plane is described, and a practical bounding on the search space is introduced. The physical dimensions of the communication system are analyzed in terms of their influence on the objective function, and a condition for guaranteeing convexity of the bounded objective function is given. An example transmitter array-receiver array system is introduced and used to showcase the concepts herein.

We present the first active millimeter-wave interferometric imaging system operating at 40 GHz and employing spatial frequency sampling, in a similar fashion with radio astronomy and passive millimeter-wave imaging. Using incoherent noise illumination from multiple transmitters, the sensitivity requirement on the receivers is significantly relaxed compared to passive interferometric imaging systems, reducing the cost and simplifying the hardware. We present the system topology and measurement results for two-dimensional image reconstruction of reflective targets. Three baseband noise sources are upconverted to 40 GHz for the transmitters, and two receivers are used to synthesize an inverse T-array. The inverse T-shaped two-dimensional array boasts 99.6% sparsity compared to a two-dimensional filled aperture. Reflective spheres are used in order to demonstrate the feasibility of this imaging method.

A linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) beamformer aims to completely remove interference and optimize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We examine an array geometry consisting of multiple sub-arrays. Our analysis shows that the increased inter-sensor distance typical of such setups is beneficial for the task of signal separation. Another unique feature of distributed arrays is the necessity of sharing information from different locations, which may pose a burden in terms of power and bandwidth resources. We discuss a scheme with minimalistic transmission requirements involving a preprocessing operation at each sub-array node. Expressions for the penalties due to preprocessing with local parameters are derived and corroborated with computer simulations.

The Super Instruction Architecture (SIA) was developed to support parallel implementation of algorithms for electronic structure computational chemistry calculations. The methods are programmed in a domain specific programming language called Super Instruction Assembly Language (SIAL). An important novel aspect of SIAL is that algorithms axe expressed in terms of operations (super instructions) on blocks (super numbers) rather than individual floating point numbers. The bytecode from compiled SIAL programs is executed by a parallel virtual machine known as the Super Instruction Processor (SIP). Compute intensive operations such as tensor contractions and diagonalizations, as well as communication and I/O are handled by the SIP. By separating the algorithmic complexity of the application domain in SIAL from the complexities of parallel execution on computer hardware in the SIP, a software system has been created that allows for very effective optimization and tuning on different hardware architectures with quite manageable effort.

The multidimensional array is a fundamental data structure that has been widely used in scientific computing, as well as in many big data analytics applications. distributed multi-dimensional array has been well studied in the High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms;however, little research has been done in the widely-used big data analytics platforms. In this paper, we present an implementation of distributed Multi-dimensional Array Toolkit (DMAT) on top of the Apache Spark big data analytics platform. The toolkit supports several fashions for multidimensional array distributions, repartition, transposition, access, and data parallelism with a variety of parallel execution templates. This paper introduces the software architecture and implementations of DMAT, and also studies the performance characteristics of some typical multi-dimensional array operations with different configurations.
