This paper reports on the design and development of a novel distributed Al-based framework for the automatic failure recovery of Flexible Production Systems (FPS). A distributed frame-based knowledge representation scheme of the physical production system, the production process and the products being processed is used by a set of intelligent control agents with local perception and action capabilities to recover a system through cooperation. The recovery process is being carried out in an optimal way by optimizing numerically in a decentralised fashion, the trajectory from the error state to a required safe state.

Management of complexity, changes and disturbances is one of the key issues of production today. distributed, agent-based structures represent viable alternatives to hierarchical systems provided with reactive/proactive capabilities. In the paper, approaches to distributed manufacturing architectures are surveyed, and their fundamental features are highlighted, together with the main questions to be answered while designing new structures. Moreover, an object-oriented simulation framework for development and evaluation of multi-agent manufacturing architectures is introduced. (C) 1998 Chapman & Hall.

Preliminary study of neural network process models in scheduling production for glass coating operation (AIRCO process) has identified knowledge rich control strategies for reactive scheduling. Substantial progress in the data engineering phase of the project has resulted in new insights into the knowledge acquisition requirements relevant to neural network design.

Water sharing has become an important problem in France. A lot of negotiations are taking place at a local level between farmers, water suppliers, public services and environmentalists to allocate water resources between users. The problem is to share water with respect of different criteria like economic (global output) ethical (disparities between actors) environmental (water savings). Different approaches have been already taken using linear programming or game theory, but they are always based on the hypothesis that decision-makers are completely rational, take into account few players and are often monoperiodic. We suggest that art Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) built with a Multi-Agent approach could help negotiations between different players by showing the consequences of water allocation rules and taking in consideration the players respective attitudes and their ability to change their behaviour. In this paper we will first present the model structure with the different types of agents modelled, how the model rims over a number of years and the first results of simulations.

We model peer-to-peer real-time streaming as a multistage congestion game with strategies consisting of time-sequences of network nodes (or peers), and identify a large set of strategy profiles through which the whole content reaches all peers in a minimum number of time-periods. In order to make these profiles sustainable as equilibria, we provide strategy restriction mechanisms implementing those equilibria where both streaming duration and congestion are minimized. Their functioning is exemplified in a simple simulation environment. The potential and social cost of equilibrium without strategy restrictions are also investigated. Copyright 2009 ICST.

The increase in urbanisation is making the management of city resources a difficult task. Data collected through observations (utilising humans as sensors) of the city surroundings can be used to improve decision making in terms of managing these resources. However, the data collected must be of a certain quality in order to ensure that effective and efficient decisions are made. This study is focused on the improvement of emergency and nonemergency services (city resources) through the use of participatory crowdsourcing (humans as sensors) as a data collection method (collect public safety data), utilising voice technology in the form of an interactive voice response (IVR) system. This study proposes public safety data quality criteria which were developed to assess and identify the problems affecting data quality. This study is guided by design science methodology and applies three driving theories: the data information knowledge action result (DIKAR) model, the characteristics of a smart city, and a credible data quality framework. Four critical success factors were developed to ensure that high quality public safety data is collected through participatory crowdsourcing utilising voice technologies.
