Distribution networks reliability assessment considering distributed automation system with penetration of DG units and SOP devices

The electric utility industry is moving towards a deregulated and competitive market to meet customer expectations. So, system performance and reliability assessments are getting targeted more than before. Several performance measures of reliability are developed in the literature. In this research, the NEPLAN Simulator reliability analysis module is used to determine all the reliability indices in different cases of study considering the effect of the Advanced distributed automation system (ADAS). The analysis also benefits from the presence of Penetration of distributed Generation (DG) units and Soft Open Points (SOP) to enhance system reliability alongside power quality. Therefore, this paper provides a methodology based on a cost/benefit study for distribution networks to define the best location of DG units and SOP devices that leads to better reliability indices. The objectives of the study are demonstrated and investigated through Bus 4 of the standard reliability Roy Bollington Test system (RBTS). NEPLAN uses a tool to apply the Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) strategy, which leads to a substantial reduction of maintenance expenses. Simulation results indicate a significant reduction in system reliability cost by 65.8% with significant enhancement in the average of all reliability indices and at each load point too such as Customer Average Interruption Duration Index (CAIDI) which is improved from 40.899 to 29.883, Energy not supplied also is declined by 52.34%. It is also worth saying that, even using DG units or SOP devices separately leads to positive results but the best outcomes are obtained with an appropriate combination of both. & COPY;2023 The Authors. The rising interdisciplinarity and complexity of the distributed automation systems (DASs) require the systems to be modeled in an unambiguous and high-level abstract way for cross-discipline/stage communication and interoperability in the Model-Driven Development (MDD) lifecycle. The concept of the system Architecture Model in systems engineering has been adopted for this challenge. To support the creation and analysis of this model, a modeling framework with a modeling methodology, modeling language, knowledge base, and related toolkit is established based on SysML and Semantic Web Technologies. A modeling methodology which is the core of the framework for modeling the architecture of DASs is formally defined with domain-specificity, comprehensiveness, discipline-neutrality, and platformin-dependency. Based on it, the SysML-DAS modeling language is extended from SysML, and the system Architecture Ontology is built with the help of the Knowledge Extraction Tool. This ontology works as the knowledge base not only to provide a unified and unambiguous view of the system but also to support the automated accomplishment of tasks in the MDD process. As a typical task, the semantic correctness and integrity of the system architecture model can be assessed by the Knowledge Analysis Tool in this framework.

Due to the transformation of the electric energy system, distribution grids are facing tremendous technical changes, in particular the integration of distributed generators and electric mobility load peaks. Smart grid solutions are upcoming network technology options to meet rising technical and economic challenges. However, the impact of smart grid solutions on customer and distributed generation reliability is still uncertain. Compared to conventional network components, smart grid technologies have complex characteristics during failure events. For detailed reliability modelling of these components new Markov models are developed in this paper. Considered technologies are decentralized network automation systems, on-load voltage-regulated MV/LV distribution transformers and line voltage regulators. In addition, state probabilities for each model are presented and impacts of the proposed models are discussed.

One key research topic is to solve design complexities of industrial cyber-physical systems by applying modeling techniques. In this paper, an IEC 61499-based modeling language is propsed for industrial cyber-physical systems. Furthermore, how these modeling techniques could be beneficial for industrial cyber-physical systems are investigated. Finally, an industrial cyber-physical system design tool is implemented by applying the proposed IEC 61499-based modeling language.

Existing models focus on specific aspects of distributed automation systems, e. g. communication aspects (IEC 61158) or application aspects (IEC 61131-3). systems like IEC 61499 are directly dedicated to distributed applications but leave essential details of communication integration open. For the design of distributed automation systems it is necessary to understand the behavior of the complete system. This contribution introduces a concise model of distributed automation systems integrating communication layer of the OSI reference model with the non-distributed model of IEC 61131-3.

Operation mode handling is one of the important tasks in automation systems. Guidelines for the definition and handling of operation modes are currently provided by academicians and related organizations focusing on centralized systems. In distributed automation systems, such guidelines are seldom dealt with. Therefore, operation mode guidance compatible with the distributed application idea is proposed in this paper. Some modes such as automatic (including setup/starting-up, normal production, hold, stop, tolerance error handling and abort), semi-automatic, manual, emergency stop and idle are considered for managing the operation. The modeling using UML state machine is presented to describe the behavior of modes and their internal states. An implementation based on a task scheduling approach is presented as an example for the application of the developed strategies.

Current research on mechatronic engineering focuses mainly on engineering methodologies. This paper presents a new architecture based on the reference model of IEC 61499. This architecture includes both, the engineering view of a device represented by its services and their representation within the control application as function blocks that are used within the whole distributed automation system. The services of a mechatronic component are its special functionalities, for instance motion in the case of a linear servo drive. The direct relation between services and IEC 61499 function blocks enables simple and intuitive control engineering for the user. In this paper the usage of this novel integrated approach is demonstrated by the example of a linear axis. Each movement of the axis corresponds to a certain function block. The control application itself is modelled by associating the motion sequence with the services encapsulated in function blocks. The embedded control platform of the mechatronic component executes the application control logic and each device within the network is able to access the services of a certain mechatronic component. Therefore device vendors are able to enhance their products by integrating their special Intellectual Property. The users can access the functionality of the mechatronic components without regard to its implementation details.

The experimental microcomputer-system fault-tolerance implementation in distributed process automation systems (FIPS) represents a component of a distributed process automation system. It was developed to explore the possibilities of implementing fault-tolerance with regard to the specific requirements of the industrial process automation. Attention is focused on the synchronization tools of the according real-time operating system regional executive (REX), supporting parallel cooperating jobs on different subsystems that compare or vote on process-output-signals. The tools include: 1. synchronous job execution, 2. a transparent regional message handler, and 3. soft synchronization of the local clocks. Furthermore, a method is shown to inform the application programmer about a job restart allowing the programmer to react according to the requirements of the technical process and of the control-algorithm.
