In order to realize the reduction of equipment cost and the demand of higher capacity, wireless mesh network （WMN） router devices usually have several interfaces and work on multi-channels. Jointing channel allocation, interface assignment and routing can efficiently improve the network capacity. This paper presents an efficient channel assignment scheme combined with the multi-radio link quality source routing （MR-LQSR） protocol, which is called channel assignment with MR-LQSR （CA-LQSR）. In this scheme, a physical interference model is established： calculated transmission time （CTT） is proposed as the metric of channel assignment, which can reflect the real network environment and channel interference best, and enhanced weighted cumulative expected transmission time （EWCETT） is proposed as the routing metric, which preserves load balancing and bandwidth of links. Meantime, the expression of EWCETT contains the value of CTT, thus the total cost time of channel assignment and routing can be reduced. Simulation results show that our method has advantage of higher throughput, lower end-to-end time delay, and less network cost over some other existing methods.

distributed QoE-aware channel assignment algorithms for IEEE 802.11 WLANs

One of the challenging problems with deployment of IEEE 802.11WLANs in the same hotspot is assignment of appropriate channels to the Access Points (APs). As the number of channels in IEEE 802.11 is limited and most of them are partially overlapping, proper reuse of such channels is a complex optimization problem with respect to the traffic load and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Previous methods mostly employ the estimated number of interfering clients or the interference level that is measured by the AP as the main decision parameter, without regarding the actual interference imposed to the clients and their QoS requirements. Quality of Experience (QoE) is defined as the overall acceptability of the service as perceived by the user and can be exploited as a new metric which not only reflects the impairments (such as interference) imposed to the traffic, but also represents the user/service requirements. In this paper, a novel performance index, which takes into account both the aggregate QoE and the user-level fairness, is defined and channel assignment is formulated as the optimization problem on maximizing this index. Two novel distributed channel assignment algorithms are presented that exploit the QoE measure of associated clients to locally solve the optimization problem using Learning Automata mechanism. The proposed methods have been analyzed and compared to the famous Least Congested channel Scan method by simulations where the results have shown superior performance in term of defined performance index.

Minimum neighbour and extended Kalman filter estimator: a practical distributed channel assignment scheme for dense wireless local area networks

Dense deployments of wireless local area networks (WLANs) are becoming a norm in many cities around the world. However, increased interference and traffic demands can severely limit the aggregate throughput achievable unless an effective channel assignment scheme is used. In this work, a simple and effective distributed channel assignment (DCA) scheme is proposed. It is shown that in order to maximise throughput, each access point (AP) simply chooses the channel with the minimum number of active neighbour nodes (i.e. nodes associated with neighbouring APs that have packets to send). However, application of such a scheme to practice depends critically on its ability to estimate the number of neighbour nodes in each channel, for which no practical estimator has been proposed before. In view of this, an extended Kalman filter (EKF) estimator and an estimate of the number of nodes by AP are proposed. These not only provide fast and accurate estimates but can also exploit channel switching information of neighbouring APs. Extensive packet level simulation results show that the proposed minimum neighbour and EKF estimator (MINEK) scheme is highly scalable and can provide significant throughput improvement over other channel assignment schemes.

In this letter, we propose a distributed channel assignment where each basestation selects a set of channels shared by multiple users through time domain scheduling for best effort services The proposed scheme distributedly assigns the channels considering a cochannel interference from neighboring basestations and its own traffic load condition The computer simulation demonstrates that the proposed scheme appropriately assigns the channels to the basestations taking into account these requirements.

This paper presents a distributed and localized interference-aware channel assignment framework for multi-radio wireless mesh networks in a cognitive network environment. The availability of multiple interfaces and channels in wireless devices is expected to enhance network throughput in wireless mesh networks. A notable design issue in such networks is how to dynamically assign available channels to multiple radio interfaces for maximizing effective network throughput by minimizing interference. The proposed framework uses a novel interference estimation method by utilizing distributed conflict graphs on a per-interface basis. Presented results obtained via simulation studies in 802.11 based multi-radio mesh networks indicate that for both homogeneous and heterogeneous primary networks, the proposed protocol can facilitate a large increase in network throughput in comparison with a Common channel assignment mechanism that is used as a benchmark in the literature. In this work, we consider a distributed link-weighted and distance-constrained channel assignment (DLDCA) algorithm for a multi-channel multi-hop mesh network, such as community wireless networks, to maximize its throughput. Efficient channel assignment could greatly reduce interference of each link from its neighboring links and subsequently improve the network throughput. In response to it, we introduce an interference metric, namely, Min-Max I-value of an edge (MMIE), to explicitly accounts for interference among links that are at distance one. In addition, we further show that the above problem with respect to MMIE is NP-hard in computation. This guides us to develop a new distributed channel assignment algorithm called DLDCA algorithm. We study the DLDCA performance by implementing it in a wireless simulation environment. The simulation results show that in a multi-channel multi-hop network, DLDCA significantly outperforms previously proposed channel assignment schemes.

The capacity of mobile ad hoc networks is constrained by the intra-flow interference introduced by adjacent nodes oil the same path, and inter-flow interference generated by nodes from neighboring paths. By assigning orthogonal channels to neighboring nodes, one can minimize both types of interferences and allow concurrent transmissions within the neighborhood, thus improving the throughput and delay performance of the ad hoc network. In this paper, we present three novel distributed channel assignment protocols for multi-channel mobile ad hoc networks. The proposed protocols combine channel assignment with distributed on-demand routing, and only assign channels to active nodes. They are shown to require fewer channels and exhibit lower communication, computation, and storage complexity, compared with existing approaches. Through simulation studies, we show that the proposed protocols can effectively increase throughput and reduce delay, as compared to several existing schemes, thus providing an effective solution to the low capacity problem in multi-hop wireless networks. To improve the capacity of wireless ad hoc networks by exploiting multiple available channels, we propose a distributed channel assignment protocol that is based on a cross-layer approach. By combining channel assignment with routing protocols, the proposed channel assignment protocol is shown to require fewer channels and exhibit lower communication, computation, and storage complexity than existing channel assignment schemes. A multi-channel MAC (MC-MAC) protocol that works with the proposed channel assignment protocol is also presented. We prove the correctness of the proposed channel assignment protocol. In addition, through a performance study, we show that the proposed protocol can substantially increase throughput and reduce delay in wireless ad hoc networks, compared to the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol and an existing multi-channel scheme.
