Canonical distributed quantization schemes do not scale to large sensor networks due to the exponential decoder storage complexity that they entail. Prior efforts to tackle this issue have largely been limited to the suboptimal schemes of source grouping and decoding, thus failing to use all available information at the decoder. We propose a new decoding paradigm where all received bits are used in decoding. Essentially, to decode each source, we partition the space of received bit-tuples using a nearest neighbor quantizer at a decoding rate consistent with the allowed complexity and each partition is then mapped to a reconstruction value for that source. To avoid local minima in design, we resort to deterministic annealing to determine the nearest neighbor partition function (the partitioning prototypes) from the training set. Results on several data-sets show substantial gains over naive and other competing approaches.

This paper studies the optimization of zero-delay analog mappings in a network setting that involves distributed coding. The cost surface is known to be non-convex, and known greedy methods tend to get trapped in poor locally optimal solutions that depend heavily on initialization. We derive an optimization algorithm based on the principles of "deterministic annealing", a powerful global optimization framework that has been successfully employed in several disciplines, including, in our recent work, to a simple zero-delay analog communications problem. We demonstrate strict superiority over the descent based methods, as well as present example mappings whose properties lend insights on the workings of the solution and relations with digital distributed coding.

This paper considers the problem of distributed source coding for a large sensor network. A typical shortcoming of current approaches to true distributed coding is the exponential growth of the decoder codebook size with the number of sources in the network. This growth in complexity renders many traditional approaches impractical for even moderately sized sensor networks. Inspired by our recent results on fusion coding for selective retrieval, we propose a new distributed coding approach that scales to a large number of sources. Central to our approach is a "bit-subset selector" module whose role is to judiciously extract an appropriate subset of the received bits for decoding per individual source. This, together with joint design of all system components, enables direct optimization of the decoder complexity-distortion tradeoff, and thereby the desired scalability. Experiments on both real and synthetic data-sets show considerable gains over heuristic schemes.

Recently, the latest advances in compact feature representation and feature learning have provided an efficient framework for several visual analysis tasks, such as object recognition. However, when multiple cameras with overlapping fields-of-view are employed, other visual analysis tasks such as depth estimation can be supported and object recognition accuracy can be improved. In this paper the problem of distributed visual analysis from multiple views of a scene is addressed, considering that computational power and bandwidth, at each camera sensor, are rather limited. More specifically, an efficient coding technique for local binary features is proposed which exploits the correlation at the decoder side between each descriptor and its quantized representation. Moreover, considering that descriptors representing the same visual feature across different views are well correlated, a technique to avoid the transmission of redundant descriptors from multiple views is proposed. At the decoder, the joint statistics of all descriptors from all views is used to drive the selection of the best descriptors to be transmitted by each sensing node. The proposed multi-view feature coding and selection techniques allow obtaining bitrate reductions up to 80%, with respect to the uncompressed descriptor rate, for a certain task accuracy.

In this paper, we propose a random sleep protocol based on distributed coding (RSDC) to realize an energy-efficient sensor-to-vehicle communications. In the proposed protocol, every sensors independently decide to either sleep or transmit with a given sleep probability. The sleep of sensors can be considered as erasures;packets are erased with the sleep probability. We, hence, introduce Luby-transform (LT) codes to efficiently decode original packets. Also, we compare our proposed protocol with a conventional protocol, and numerical results show that our proposed scheme achieves even higher energy efficiency.

Optimal Localist and distributed coding of Spatiotemporal Spike Patterns Through STDP and Coincidence Detection

Repeating spatiotemporal spike patterns exist and carry information. Here we investigated how a single spiking neuron can optimally respond to one given pattern (localist coding), or to either one of several patterns (distributed coding, i.e., the neuron's response is ambiguous but the identity of the pattern could be inferred from the response of multiple neurons), but not to random inputs. To do so, we extended a theory developed in a previous paper (Masquelier, 2017), which was limited to localist coding. More specifically, we computed analytically the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a multi-pattern-detector neuron, using a threshold-free leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) neuron model with non-plastic unitary synapses and homogeneous Poisson inputs. Surprisingly, when increasing the number of patterns, the SNR decreases slowly, and remains acceptable for several tens of independent patterns. In addition, we investigated whether spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) could enable a neuron to reach the theoretical optimal SNR. To this aim, we simulated a LIF equipped with STDP, and repeatedly exposed it to multiple input spike patterns, embedded in equally dense Poisson spike trains. The LIF progressively became selective to every repeating pattern with no supervision, and stopped discharging during the Poisson spike trains. Furthermore, tuning certain STDP parameters, the resulting pattern detectors were optimal. Tens of independent patterns could be learned by a single neuron using a low adaptive threshold, in contrast with previous studies, in which higher thresholds led to localist coding only. Taken together these results suggest that coincidence detection and STDP are powerful mechanisms, fully compatible with distributed coding. Yet we acknowledge that our theory is limited to single neurons, and thus also applies to feed-forward networks, but not to recurrent ones.

A New Scheme of distributed Video coding Based on Compressive Sensing and Intra-Predictive coding

Compressive sensing is attractive to distributed video coding with respect to two issues: low complexity in encoding and low data rate in transmission. In this paper, a novel compressive sensing-based distributed video coding system is presented based on a combination of predictive coding and Wyner-Ziv difference coding of compressively sampled frames. Experimental results show that the data volume in transmission in the proposed method is less than one tenth of the distributed compressive video sensing. The quality of decoded video was evaluated in terms of PSNR and structural similarity index as well as visual inspections.

In this paper, we propose a new distributed coding structure with a soft input soft output (SISO) relay encoder for error-prone parallel relay channels. We refer to it as the distributed soft coding (DISC). In the proposed scheme, each relay first uses the received noisy signals to calculate the soft bit estimate (SBE) of the source symbols. A simple SISO encoder is developed to encode the SBEs of source symbols based on a constituent code generator matrix. The SISO encoder outputs at different relays are then forwarded to the destination and form a distributed codeword. The performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed. It is shown that its performance is determined by the generator sequence weight (GSW) of the relay constituent codes, where the GSW of a constituent code is defined as the number of ones in its generator sequence. A new coding design criterion for optimally assigning the constituent codes to all the relays is proposed based on the analysis. Results show that the proposed DISC can effectively circumvent the error propagation due to the decoding errors in the conventional detect and forward (DF) with relay re-encoding and bring considerable coding gains, compared to the conventional soft information relaying.

It has been shown that distributed turbo coding (DTC) can approach the capacity of a wireless relay network. In the existing DTC schemes, it is usually assumed that error-free decoding is performed at a relay. We refer to this type of DTC schemes as perfect DTC. In this paper, we propose a novel DTC scheme. For the proposed scheme, instead of making a decision on the transmitted information symbols at the relay as in perfect DTC, we calculate and forward the corresponding soft information. We derive parity symbol soft estimates for the interleaved source information when only the a posteriori probabilities of the information symbols are known. The results show that the proposed scheme can effectively mitigate error propagation due to erroneous decoding at the relay. Simulation results also confirm that the proposed scheme approaches the outage probability bound of a distributed two-hop relay network at high signal-to-noise ratios.
