The design optimization of the system of systems (SoS) is of great significance but extremely difficult. A collaborative optimization method based on coevolutionary game is proposed to solve this problem. More specifically, it first provides a standardized design decision model for a large number of heterogeneous systems within an SoS in order to reduce the organizational complexity of the design process significantly, and then uses different game models to describe the collaborative interactions between heterogeneous systems and effectively deal with various coupling constraints and objective conflicts in the evolutionary design process of the SoS. Then, the multi-attribute utility theory, experimental design method, response surface modeling technology and differential evolution algorithm are combined to find a satisfactory global optimal solution with the least information exchange and iterative process. Finally, the design of the over-the-horizon amphibious operation equipment SoS is used as an illustrative example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Current computer-aided layout design systems only support layout state generation, which is not ideal for engineering layout design based on distributed knowledge and intelligent. environment. This paper proposes a system framework to enable distributed engineering layout design in service-oriented architecture. A federated layout design system based on Service-ORiented Computing EnviRonment (SORCER) implements the framework. In order to supply design services to users, distributed design resources and design tools can be wrapped as SORCER service providers. And the users should be wrapped as service requesters so that they can join in the federated layout design system. A layout design interface protocol is developed to define standardized design services for whole layout process. The protocol content include standard layout components and containers representation, design parameter, layout state representation, design constrain representation and human-computer interaction command etc. Data interoperability between services is enhanced by design context communication. In order to be free loaded and used in the federated layout design system, each service needs to implements the interface protocol strictly. This system aims to enable asynchronous distributed collaborative design with ease of alternative design services, reduced design cycles, and improved layout resolution quality.

Parametric collaborative design of Network-based Mechanical Products

Aiming at the problems of low-level information sharing, slow transmission and repetitive work in the designing process of product series, the internet-oriented parametric collaborative design method is proposed, in which the problems of sharing conflict and network heterogeneous in the distributed collaborative design are analyzed, and the construction method of collaborative design platforms based on PDMWorks Workgroup is put forward. Through studying the mechanism of roles distribution and function allocation and data concurrency control, the communication mechanism of internet-oriented collaborative design is formulated. On the basis of structure features of overhead travelling crane, through combining parametric variant design with collaborative design, internet-oriented parametric collaborative design system of overhead travelling crane is developed and verified through main girder design. A remote CAE collaborative design system for complex product based on design resource unit

Globally distributed design, analysis, manufacturing, and marketing facilities take competitive advantages of technology, natural resources, and human resources around the world. While large-scale finite element analysis of complex product needs a wider support from external computer-aided engineering (CAE) resources. Based on the typology of design decomposition, this paper first presents the approach of design resource unit (DRU). In the networked distributed collaborative development environment, those distributed, replaceable, and reusable DRUs can dynamically form the temporary exertion federation environment when receiving a DRU requestor. A remote CAE collaborative design system architecture is then proposed, in which CAE is recognized as an exertion and the method of exertion-oriented programming is applied. Derived from the approach of architecture-based component composition (ABC), the DRU design agent is developed. The DRU design agent has two important features: one is to know how to find other agents, another is robustness. Both of the two features can eliminate the communication overheads of the DRU design agent. The CAE-DRUs will be applied to a number of real products including railway bogie, automobile parts, etc. The applications demonstrate that the ABC-based CAE-DRUs are practical and ubiquitous for networked product development.

This paper reviews work, on distributed collaborative virtual design environments and the emerging technology of Metacomputing. The paper discusses the design of distributed collaborative design environments using Meta computing, for example Globus, to provide intensive data computing via air asynchronous collection of loosely synchronous components. The essential component, Globus, focuses on defining a toolkit of low-level services for security, communication, resource location, resource allocation, process management, and data access. Based on this approach, the requirements for concept, functionality and performance of the design environments are provided. The key functions in the distributed collaborative design environments such as analysis, visualisation, security and database management, particularly the 3D design storage and visualisation, are also discussed. At the end of the paper further work Oil implementing the Globus-based distributed collaborative design environments is highlighted.

Concurrent engineering (CE) has been widely accepted as an effective engineering practice for decreasing product development time, improving quality, decreasing manufacturing costs, and improving customer satisfaction. Since CE philosophy is intended to consider all elements of product life cycle from the outset, CE approach increases the complexity of design problem and makes it more difficult to manage. In addition, the advances in computer networks and information technology have brought engineering design into a new era. Although a considerable number of studies have been made on design decomposition (e.g., product and process (or perspective) decomposition) as a means to reduce the complexity of a large scale design problem, relatively little attention has been given to the computational framework for dynamic and systematic design integration in a computer network-oriented design environment. This paper describes an integrated product and process modeling (IPPM) framework for collaborative product design through the Internet. Here, the hierarchical and heterarchical dependencies between the decomposed smaller design problems are addressed. An agent-based approach is proposed for the computer support of hierarchical and heterarchical design topologies. In our framework, a smaller design problem is dynamically modeled in terms of interacting and pluggable design agents that represent a specific aspect of the design problem and provide the interoperability between heterogeneous design agents or software applications, and the results of these smaller problems are recursively integrated to formulate solutions to the larger problems in a systematic manner. Finally, the proposed framework forms a global design network through which a number of design possibilities are explored.
