In the field of industrial automation, fieldbus is changing the traditional DCS's important position and the architecture of distributed computer control system. However, it is not the time that fieldbus is popularized widely in China because of the factors of economy, technology and industrial automatic level. Therefore, this paper presents a mixed distributed computer control system that is composed of fieldbus and RS485 communication protocol. Through fieldbus and RS485, process parameters and status information of field devices are delivered to monitoring computer. In addition, the information integration between controlsystem and management system is achieved using ODBC technology. This system has already been implemented on the product line in one large-scale tobacco group successfully. The performance results show that the system exerts the advantages of both Fieldbus and traditional data bus adequately, and has many advantages, such as openness, reliability and high ratio of capability-to-price.

A generalized concept of parallelism in computer architecture is summarized and adopted as a common thread linking different categories of multiple-computersystems. Resource replication, time-overlapping and resource sharing are three ways in which parallelism may be realized. From the architectural point of view, a distributed computer control system is considered as the combination of these three forms of parallelism with its hierarchical system structure analyzed in different partitions. Several useful architectures with this property are proposed.

The Fault-tolerant systems Research Group of the Technical University of Valencia has developed the distributed industrial central system (DICOS) system. This paper describes DICOS nodes. The architecture of DICOS nodes and the error detection mechanisms used are presented. These mechanisms are based on the internal capabilities of the 16-bit microcontroller used and control flow checking and deadlines control with the aid of a second 8-bit microcontroller. This paper describes a visual tool for developing real-time control software for distributed industrial systems. The aim of this project currently in progress, is to obtain a visual programming environment which integrates both the advantages of object-oriented modelling for the design and simulation of systems and the power of modern distributedcontrolsystems (i.e. computers with real-time operating systems interconnected by means of industrial real-time networks). To bridge the gap between the object-oriented system model and the implementation level, at which we have multiple parallel tasks running on a network, sequential function charts (SFCs) are used as a standard formalism [12,16] for the description of system dynamics and control software programming. This paper introduces a new Supervisory system for multi-products Batch process, providing basic functions for CIM construction. This system was released in April, 1990. This system communicates with DCS/PLC and constructs real-time-driven-database typically for batch processes and enables easy recognition, by the operational, the productional and the administrative personnel, the actual status of operation and production. It enhances easy quality control and early adjustment of operation if deviation from the original plan occurs during actual production. Furthermore, this system is able to support planning of production schedule and stock control, and ensures stable productivity of the plant, helping in adding higher value to the product.

Conventional analog instruments fail to achieve a satisfactory automatic controlsystem for an automated batch system in which transient states are encountered and frequent alterations of type and/or grade vary the nature of the operations. The authors obtained even better results than expected by employing a distributedcomputersystem in batch control. This paper presents the related hard-and software details together with an outline description of the type and/or grade controlsystem, improved controlability, countermeasures against erroneous operations, and results given by the new system.

The CERN Large Electron Positron (LEP) collider ring under construction and the existing Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator will both be operated from the same main control room over a new control network implementing the token-ring protocol in conformity to the IEEE 802.2 and 802.5 standards. To cover the circumference of the LEP and SPS accelerator rings and the long distances (up to 4.6 kms) between geographically distributedcontrol areas an unconventional transmission method has been implemented and successfully tested with the contribution of the IBM Zürich Research Laboratories. The LEP/SPS control network, consisting of several token-rings, inter-connected by bridges, and of gateways to the present SPS multi-star network and to the CERN computer centre, will be described as well as the network reconfiguration and diagnostic facilities.

In conclusion it will be shown that if the final aim of the centralized DDC was to replace the operators, the purpose of these new trends is: - to assist them and give them more efficient tools - to berter inform them about the process - to improve their judgement and ability to supervise and manage the process.
