The aim of this paper is to present the computation of end winding reactance using a 3D finite element program. Special attention has been focused on induction machines. Different windings have been analyzed and, when available, experimental results have been compared against computed values. The comparison has shown very good agreement between the two values.

The article presents a discussion of ubiquitous computing. It presents a set of design principles derived from philosophical considerations, which are said to provide a guide to the successful creation of ubiquitous computing devices. The writings of Martin Heidegger are cited, particularly his observation that representations of the world can be distracting, and interrupt the flow of a person's actions. Similarly, computing devices that involve the manipulation of representative imagery are not transparent in terms of cognitive availability. Heidegger's analysis of how people are dynamically situated in the world is recommended for conceptualizing how to design technologies that are cognitively available.

A FUNDAMENTAL MEASURE OF PROGRESS IN computing involves rendering it as an inseparable part of our everyday experience while simultaneously making it disappear [2]. Radical improvements in microprocessor cost-performance ratios have pushed this process forward while drastically reducing computing-device form factors, enabling us to embed computers in many parts of our environments. In 40 years this change has transformed the early large "computing machines" into compact devices that enable, mediate, support, and organize our daily activities.

The world's largest scientific machine is scheduled to enter production in the second half of 2007-roughly one year from the time of this conference. In order to exploit the scientific potential of this machine, computational resources way beyond those which have been deployed for previous accelerators are required. Given these requirements-and the impracticality of providing such resources in a central place-a distributed solution based on Grid technologies has been developed. This paper describes the overall requirements that come from the computing Models of the experiments, the state of deployment of the production services, on-going validation of these services as well as the offline infrastructure of the experiments and finally the remaining steps that need to be achieved in the remaining months before the deluge of data arrives. One of the most enjoyable features of the systems support for ubiquitouscomputing (UbiSys) workshops in 2003 and 2004 has been the freeform small group and plenarydiscussion sessions. Last year, we focused on identifying ‘hot topics’ from the paper sessions toform break out groups for further discussion. This year the discussion session was motivated by athought provoking talk from Wim Stut from Philips Research, where he highlighted two aspects theyhad identified during talks with researchers in this domain that he believed were often overlookedin existing scenarios: Self-configuration. Graceful degradation. He argued that existing supportinginfrastructures often make unreasonable assumptions about the degree to which the location, contextand users of devices involved in typical Ubicomp application scenarios are known by the system. Thisknowledge is typically ‘just there’, i.e. is established a priori by system developers or“power” users, or is even so implicit to the scenario that the authors do not realize that theyare making these assumptions in the first place! Such information makes systems too complex to usein real-life scenarios. These systems are complex and dynamic and therefore require functionality toconfigure themselves automatically, or through trivial user interaction.

We present a technique to adaptively optimize the performance of the cone-kernel distribution (CKD) by varying the cone length in response to changing signal properties. The result is an adaptive CKD that preserves the outer hull of signal time support, yields excellent results on real signals, outperforms fixed-length CKD's, and requires only slightly more computation than a fixed-kernel distribution.

Given the magnitude specifications in the passband and stopband, the inverse Chebyshev functions require the identical order n as the Chebyshev counterparts. But the former, having the maximally flat characteristic at omega = 0, exhibit much more desirable phase- and time-delay characteristics. Various quantitative comparisons have been made so that a designer may find some merits in the inverse Chebyshev filters depending on specifications and criteria.

A set of physical and functional system components and their interconnection protocols have been established for all controls work at the AGS. Portions of these designs were tested as part of enhanced operation of the AGS as a source of polarized protons and additional segments will be implemented during the continuing construction efforts which are adding heavy ion capability to our facility. Included in our efforts are the following computer and control system elements: a broad band local area network, which embodies MODEMS; transmission systems and branch interface units; a hierarchical layer, which performs certain data base and watchdog/alarm functions; a group of work station processors (Apollo's) which perform the function of traditional minicomputer host(s) and a layer, which provides both real time control and standardization functions for accelerator devices and instrumentation. Data base and other accelerator functionality is assigned to the most correct level within our network for both real time performance, long-term utility, and orderly growth.
