distributed algorithms are essential for reducing communication costs, computational complexity, and memory requirements while performing collaborative estimation using multi-agent systems. Additionally, robustness in estimators is important to prevent performance degradation when the measurement noise is non-Gaussian. Least absolute deviations estimators are known to be robust in the presence of gross errors or outliers in the measurements. To this end, we develop the distributed least absolute deviations (D-LAD) estimator for linear systems whereby the agents iteratively exchange information with their immediate neighbors via single-hop communications to gain a network-wide consensus on the estimates. Additionally, the D-LAD algorithm is implemented in a nonlinear framework to solve the problem of distributed orbit determination of a target body using a formation of spacecraft. Numerical simulations demonstrating the effectiveness of the D-LAD estimator in linear and nonlinear settings are provided.

This study presents DELWARX, a Python based framework, in a distributed computing environment for multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) of transonic transport aircraft. DELWARX also includes a transonic flutter analysis approach that is computationally very efficient yet accurate enough for conceptual design and optimization studies. This transonic flutter analysis approach is limited to large aspect-ratio wings and attached flow. The framework employs particle swarm optimization with penalty functions for exploring optimal Transonic Truss Braced Wing and conventional cantilever wing aircraft design with two different objective functions, the fuel weight and the maximum take-off gross weight, while satisfying all the required constraints. Proper memory management is applied to effectively handle memory related issues, often a limiting factor in distributed computing. The parallel implementation in MDO using 60 processors allowed a reduction in the wall-clock time by 95.79%, which is around 23.9 times faster than the optimization using a single processor. The results include comparison of the TBW designs for the medium-range missions, with and without the new flutter constraint. Importantly, the framework achieves low computation time due to parallel optimization capability, retains all the previous functionalities of the Virginia Tech MDO framework and replaces the previously employed linear flutter analysis with a more accurate nonlinear transonic flutter computation. These features of DELWARX are expected to facilitate a more accurate MDO study of innovative, large aspect ratio transport aircraft configurations operating in transonic flow.

The merging particle filter (MPF) is a population-based quasi-Bayesian algorithm for solving sequential Bayesian problems. The MPF algorithm at each time step consists of three procedures: evaluation of fitness to observation, selection of samples in the population, and merging among multiple samples. The MPF has a certain similarity to evolutionary algorithms except that it is based on Bayesian approach and it provides a posterior probability density function rather than a optimum value. Population-based algorithms including the MPF is easy to implement on parallel computing systems. However, when we implement the MPF in a parallel computing system, much communication occurs between processing elements (PEs) and it could spoil the computational efficiency. In order to reduce the communication between PEs, we propose a bi-level hierarchical algorithm in which the MPF is locally performed in each PE and and communication between different PEs are treated separately. Although this hierarchical algorithm is similar to the island model in the genetic algorithm, it is derived on the basis of the Bayesian framework. We also confirm the efficiency of the proposed algorithm by an experiment of state estimation with a simple one-dimensional system model.

This paper discusses a problem of monitoring heterogeneous distributed computing environments which consist of loosely coupled multiplatform computing resources. We propose an approach to the organization of the meta-monitoring system which collects data from existing local monitoring systems and own software sensors, unifies and analyzes data, generates necessary control actions. The approach is based on web-technologies, multi-agent technologies, expert systems, methods of decentralized processing and distributed storage of data.

The PhysioNet WaveFormDataBase (WFDB) Toolbox for MATLAB and Octave is a collection of functions for reading, writing, and processing physiologic signals and time series used by PhysioBank databases. Using the WFDB Toolbox, researchers have access to over 50 PhysioBank databases consisting of over 3TB of physiologic signals. These signals include ECG, EEG, EMG, fetal ECG, PLETH (PPG), ABP, respiration, and others. The WFDB Toolbox provides support for local concurrency;however, it does not currently support distributed computing environments. Consequently, researchers are unable to utilize the additional resources afforded by popular distributed frameworks. The present work improves the scalability of the WFDB Toolbox by adding support for distributed environments. An example is shown of surrogate data significance testing. The example uses Star-Cluster to launch, within minutes, Hadoop Streaming on a newly created Amazon EC2 cluster with minimum configuration. The results demonstrate up to 30 fold performance increases can be achieved compared to single node processing.

In dynamic distributed computing environments, system entities may be classified into two main categories that are, in principle, in conflict. These are the Service Resource Requestors (SRRs) wishing to use services and/or exploit resources offered by the other system entities and the Service Resource Providers (SRPs) that offer the services/resources requested. Seeking for the maximisation of their welfare, while achieving their own goals and aims, entities may misbehave (intentionally or unintentionally), thus, leading to a significant deterioration of system's performance. In this study, a reputation mechanism is proposed which helps estimating SRPs trustworthiness and predicting their future behaviour, taking into account their past performance in consistently satisfying SRRs' expectations. The reputation mechanism is distributed, considers both first-hand information (acquired from the SRR's direct past experiences with the SRPs) and second-hand information (disseminated from other SRRs' past experiences with the SRPs), while it exhibits a robust behaviour against inaccurate reputation ratings.

Pocket Data Mining PDM is our new term describing collaborative mining of streaming data in mobile and distributed computing environments. With sheer amounts of data streams are now available for subscription on our smart mobile phones, the potential of using this data for decision making using data stream mining techniques has now been achievable owing to the increasing power of these handheld devices. Wireless communication among these devices using Bluetooth and WiFi technologies has opened the door wide for collaborative mining among the mobile devices within the same range that are running data mining techniques targeting the same application. This paper proposes a new architecture that we have prototyped for realizing the significant applications in this area. We have proposed using mobile software agents in this application for several reasons. Most importantly the autonomic intelligent behaviour of the agent technology has been the driving force for using it in this application. Other efficiency reasons are discussed in details in this paper. Experimental results showing the feasibility of the proposed architecture are presented and discussed.

Thereafter, under the assumption that a number of SRPs may handle the SRRs requests, the SRRs may decide on the most appropriate SRP for the service/resource requested on the basis of a weighted combination of the evaluation of the quality of their offer (performance related factor) and of their reputation rating (reliability related factor). The proposed trust management framework is distributed, considers both first-hand information (acquired from the SRR's direct past experiences with the SRPs) and second-hand information (disseminated from other SRRs' past experiences with the SRPs), while it exhibits a robust behaviour against inaccurate reputation ratings. The designed mechanisms have been empirically evaluated simulating interactions among self-interested agents, exhibiting improved performance with respect to random SRP selection.

An XML-based schema definition for model sharing and reuse in a distributed environment

This research leverages the inherent synergy between structured modeling and the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) to facilitate model sharing and reuse in a distributed environment. This is accomplished by providing an XML-based schema definition and two alternative supporting architectures. The XML schema defines a new mark-up language referred to as the Structured Modeling Markup Language (SMML) for representing models. The schema is based on the structured modeling paradigm as a formalism for conceiving, representing and manipulating a wide variety of models. Overall, SMML and supporting architectures allow different types of models, developed in a variety of modeling platforms to be represented in a standardized format and shared in a distributed environment.
