A priority-based resource allocation strategy in distributed computing networks

In a distributed computing network, various types of resources attached at nodes, such as disks, main memory, resident programs, and printers, could be shared among applications. To promote the resource utilization, an efficient resource allocation algorithm for application requests should be developed. In this paper, our system model considers the factors such as the computation power of nodes, the upper limit of shared programs, the transmission bandwidth of peripherals, the channel bandwidth, and the quality of service (QoS) requirement of applications. Based on these factors, a priority-based resource allocation strategy is proposed and applied to different environments, respectively. The simulation results show that our strategy has a near optimal solution. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

The issue of providing information security for data and computing resources in grid networks is reviewed. Specific features of architecture of distributed computing networks based on grid platforms are analyzed. Security threats specific for grid systems are typified. The available measures ensuring security for grid systems are considered, and their drawbacks are indicated. The set of applied issues associated with ensuring grid protection from unauthorized access is defined.

The architecture of access control system for user jobs access to computational resources of grid distributed computing networks, which provides protection of data being processed against threats of exceeding user privileges, is presented. The developed system is compared to the available analogues, and the results of efficiency assessment of performance of the developed system are discussed.

The paper describes the problem of unauthorized access to the data processed in distributed grid computing networks. Existing implementations of entity authentication mechanisms in grid systems are analyzed, and their disadvantages are considered. An approach to the use of group signature schemes, which prevents unauthorized access to a computing environment and provides the integrity of transferred data, is proposed.

The emergence of IoT devices and the predicted increase in the number of data-driven and delay-sensitive applications highlight the importance of dispersed computing platforms (e.g. edge computing and fog computing) that can intelligently manage in-network computation and data placement. In this paper, we propose the DECO (Data-cEntric Computation) framework for joint computation, caching, and request forwarding in data-centric computing networks. DECO utilizes a virtual control plane which operates on the demand rates for computation and data, and an actual plane which handles computation requests, data requests, data objects and computation results in the physical network. We present a throughput optimal policy within the virtual plane, and use it as a basis for adaptive and distributed computation, caching, and request forwarding in the actual plane. We demonstrate the superior performance of the DECO policy in terms of request satisfaction delay as compared with several baseline policies, through extensive numerical simulations over multiple network topologies.

We consider a distributed computing network consisting of a master and multiple workers processing tasks of different types. The master is running multiple applications. Each application stochastically generates real-time jobs with a strict job deadline, where each job is a collection of tasks of some types specified by the application. A real-time job is completed only when all its tasks are completed by the corresponding workers within the deadline. Moreover, we consider unreliable workers, whose processing speeds are uncertain. Because of the limited processing abilities of the workers, an algorithm for scheduling the jobs in the workers is needed to maximize the average number of completed jobs for each application. The scheduling problem is not only critical but also practical in distributed computing networks. In this paper, we develop two scheduling algorithms, namely, a feasibility-optimal scheduling algorithm and an approximate scheduling algorithm. The feasibility-optimal scheduling algorithm can fulfill the largest region of applications' requirements for the average number of completed jobs. However, the feasibility-optimal scheduling algorithm suffers from high computational complexity when the number of applications is large. To address the issue, the approximate scheduling algorithm is proposed with a guaranteed approximation ratio in the worst-case scenario. The approximate scheduling algorithm is also validated in the average-case scenario via computer simulations.
