＜正＞Genetic Algorithm has emerged as a successful tool for optimization problems[1].Earlier,we proposed a task allocation model to maximize the reliability of distributed computing system（DCS） using genetic algorithm[2].Our objective,in this work,is to use the same simple genetic algorithm to minimize the turnaround time of the task given to the DCS for execution and then to compare the resultant allocation with the allocation of maximal reliablity as obtained in [2].Comparisons of both the algorithms are made by illustrated examples and appropriate comments.

This paper deals with the main principles and requirements of building a distributed fault-tolerant computing system for MicroGrid needs. This includes hardware and software infrastructure for managing power generation, transmission, consumption and accumulation processes. The system is built on the base of ARM64 SoC computers and microservice paradigm.

FRAsystem: fault tolerant system using agents in distributed computing systems

In this paper, we present a fault tolerant and recovery system called FRAsystem (Fault Tolerant & Recovery Agent system) using multi-agent in distributed computing systems. Previous rollback-recovery protocols were dependent on an inherent communication and an underlying operating system, which caused a decline of computing performance. We propose a rollback-recovery protocol that works independently on an operating system and leads to an increasing portability and extensibility. We define four types of agents: (1) a recovery agent performs a rollback-recovery protocol after a failure, (2) an information agent constructs domain knowledge as a rule of fault tolerance and information during a failure-free operation, (3) a facilitator agent controls the communication between agents, (4) a garbage collection agent performs garbage collection of the useless fault tolerance information. Since agent failures may lead to inconsistent states of a system and a domino effect, we propose an agent recovery algorithm. A garbage collection protocol addresses the performance degradation caused by the increment of saved fault tolerance information in a stable storage. We implemented a prototype of FRAsystem using Java and CORBA and experimented the proposed rollback-recovery protocol. The simulations results indicate that the performance of our protocol is better than previous rollback-recovery protocols which use independent checkpointing and pessimistic message logging without using agents. Our contributions are as follows: (1) this is the first rollback-recovery protocol using agents, (2) FRAsystem is not dependent on an operating system, and (3) FRAsystem provides a portability and extensibility.

Energy Efficient Speed Scaling and Task Scheduling for distributed computing systems

With the rapid development of the performance of computer systems, energy consumption has been increasing dramatically as well. Energy efficiency has been paid much attention, especially in large-scale distributed computing systems. We propose an effective approach for energy reduction, by dynamic speed scaling and task scheduling simultaneously. Markov models for distributed computing systems are proposed, and detailed analyses of the models are provided. Markov decision processes(MDP) are applied for problem formulation, and MDP algorithms for obtaining the optimal solutions are introduced. The efficacy of our approach is further validated by simulation experiments.

Task allocation policy and hardware redundancy policy for distributed computing system (DCS) are of great importance as they affect many system characteristics such as system cost, system reliability and performance. In recent years, abundant research has been carried out on the optimal task allocation and/or hardware redundancy problem, most of which took a reliability-oriented approach, i.e., the optimization criterion was system reliability maximization. Nevertheless, besides system reliability, other system characteristics such as system cost may be of great concern to management. In this paper, we take a cost-oriented approach to the optimal task allocation and hardware redundancy problem for DCS, which addresses both system cost and system reliability issues. A system cost model which could reflect the impact of system unreliability on system cost is developed, and by minimizing the total system cost, a satisfactory level of system reliability could be reached simultaneously. In the reliability modeling and analysis of DCS, we take both hardware reliability and software reliability into account. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the formulation and solution procedures, in which genetic algorithm is used. Results show that based on the developed system cost model, appropriate decision-makings on task allocation and hardware redundancy policies for DCS could be made, and the result obtained seems to be a fairly good trade-off between system cost and system reliability. Application controlled checkpointing coordination for fault-tolerant distributed computing systems

In order to provide fault tolerance for distributed systems, the checkpointing technique has widely been used and many researches have been performed to reduce the overhead of checkpointing coordination. In this paper, we present a new checkpointing coordination scheme in which the application controls the coordination activity by utilizing the communication pattern of the application program. Unlike the previous solutions which do not utilize the communication pattern of cooperating processes, it is possible to reduce the coordination effort as well as the number of checkpoints enforced to be taken. Extensive simulations have been performed to evaluate the proposed scheme and we have concluded that the proposed scheme significantly reduces the coordination overhead compared with the existing loose coordination scheme. Probabilistic load scheduling with priorities in distributed computing systems

In this paper a distributed computing system/network in which two type of loads (or jobs) namely local loads and global loads arrive is considered. The local loads originate at the individual processors/nodes in the network and have to be processed at the same processors. The global loads originate at the central scheduler and have to be distributed among the processors in the system. The individual processors in the system assign different priorities to local and global loads. A priority queuing optimization model of this situation is formulated as a nonlinear programming problem and a solution methodology is presented. The arrival rate of the global and local loads are assumed to follow Poisson distribution and the service time of the global and local loads at the processors follow a general or exponential service time distribution. Both the situations are analyzed. The objective of this study is to minimize the response time of the global loads in the network. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

ELISA: An estimated load information scheduling algorithm for distributed computing systems

In this paper, we present a decentralized dynamic load scheduling/balancing algorithm called ELISA (Estimated Load Information Scheduling Algorithm) for general purpose distributed computing systems. ELISA uses estimated state information based upon periodic exchange of exact state information between neighbouring nodes to perform load scheduling. The primary objective of the algorithm is to cut down on the communication and load transfer overheads by minimizing the frequency of status exchange and by restricting the load transfer and status exchange within the buddy set of a processor. It is shown that the resulting algorithm performs almost as well as a perfect information algorithm and is superior to other load balancing schemes based on the random sharing and Ni-Hwang algorithms. A sensitivity analysis to study the effect of various design parameters on the effectiveness of load balancing is also carried out. Finally, the algorithm's performance is tested on large dimensional hypercubes in the presence of time-varying load arrival process and is shown to perform well in comparison to other algorithms. This makes ELISA a viable and implementable load balancing algorithm for use in general purpose distributed computing systems. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
