The paper presents an overview of existing workload management systems and diagnoses difficulties in their use. Such systems require a complex configuration, and the process of ordering tasks to be carried out is burdened with many restrictions. A new solution is presented which supports the use of massive distributed computations. The work presents the process of designing, implementing and testing the workload management Shapp library, based on the HTCondor system. It implements a convenient application interface in the form of a dynamically linked library, which extends the capabilities of existing applications with a convenient mechanism allowing the use of massive distributed processing. Recursive computations in tree-like structure are possible using Shapp library.

In distributed computing systems, toad balancing is one of the most important factors that affect the system performance. This paper presents a sender-intiated dynamic load balancing policies in a distributed computing system. There are four policies consisted in the proposed Extenics-based Load Balancing Mechanism (ELBM). For the transfer policy, instead of defining a fixed threshold value in the traditional load balancing policies. we are applying the extension set theory and using the average response time of jobs as a factor to create an adaptive threshold value which is calculated by relational function of average response time, for determining that a new arriving job should be migrated or not. In addition to the transfer policy, bypass-transfer method is used in the location policy. Jobs that need to be migrated do not need to he transferred to central node first, but are Transferred to destination node directly, so as to reduce the communication costs. In order to make the system more reliable, a template queue is added at the master node of the system to reduce the job arrival failure. A simulation model has been built for evaluating the performance of the system. Comparing with other toad balancing mechanisms, such as RT and ALBCII algorithms, the simulation results show that a better performance can be achieved by the proposed mechanism.

Monitoring traffics between applications deployed in a distributed computing system (DCS) can help analyzers perceive the dynamic load of each application, and detect the anomalies in all the running processes. However, due to the factors of high dimension and strong periodicity, the traffic data is difficult to visualize and interpret. In this paper, we propose a traffic monitoring approach based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) which is a classical dimension-reduction tool. We find that the first PC represents the overall scale of the traffic while the second PC reflects all nontrivial variations caused by different applications. Then we locate the exact alteration time and identify the very changing applications by a semi-Bayes algorithm on the second PC. We further perform online anomaly detection on new traffics utilizing the previously classified data. Experiments on datasets collected from several distributed computing systems including 44 applications show the proposed approach can effectively facilitate DSC traffic monitoring, and outperforms Kmeans and DBSCAN in identifying different system states.

A distributed computing system behaves like a complex network, the interactions between nodes being essentially information exchanges and migrations of jobs or services to execute. The load balancing consists in distributing the load evenly between system nodes. It aims at enhancing the resource usage. A load balancing strategy specifies scenarios for the cooperation. Its efficiency depends on quantity, accuracy, and distribution of available information. But the distribution of information on the nodes, together with the initial network structure, may create different logical network structures. In this paper, different load balancing strategies are tested on different network structures using a simulation. The four tested strategies are able to distribute evenly the load so that the system reaches a steady state (the mean response time of the jobs is constant), but it is shown that a given strategy indeed behaves differently according to structural parameters.

In this paper, we propose a distributed-based Hierarchical Clustering system for Large-Scale Semiconductor Wafers (DHCSSW). By applying the big-data framework to existing hierarchical clustering algorithm, the proposed system makes it feasible to cluster large-scale wafers with up to 320,000 wafers. To verify the performance of our approach, we used simulated wafer maps. The experimental results show that our system outperformed the existing hierarchical clustering in processing large-scale wafers, suggesting that currently used hierarchical clustering is insufficient in analyzing large-scale wafer maps. In addition, some failure patterns, which the existing approach is not able to detect, can be found with the DHCSSW. We anticipate that the DHCSSW will contribute in identifying the failure patterns in large-scale semiconductor wafers.

Independent task scheduling algorithms in distributed computing systems deal with three main conflicting factors including load balance, task execution time and scheduling cost. In this paper, the problem of scheduling tasks arriving at a low rate and with long execution time in heterogeneous computing systems is studied, and a new scheduling algorithm based on prediction is proposed. This algorithm evaluates the utility of task scheduling based on statistics and prediction to solve the influence of heterogeneous computing systems. The experimental results reveal that the proposed algorithm adequately balances the conflicting factors, and thus performs better than some classical algorithms such as MCT and MET when the parameters are well selected.

Demands for efficient and effective utilization of computing resources have derived distributed computing systems of the large scaled such as Grid for scientific computing and Cloud for utility computing. In these distributed computing systems the total capacity of consolidated storages should expand as the amount of user data grows. The user's data are necessarily kept in the distributed computing system such as the Grid and the Cloud, which some users don't allow the system to. In this work, an auxiliary storage subsystem is proposed to provide external storages to the distributed computing system. The storage subsystem lets the iSCSI devices be connected to the distributed computing system as needed. As iSCSI is a recent, standard, and widely deployed protocol for storage networking, the subsystem is able to accommodate many types of storages outside of the distributed computing system. The proposed subsystem could transmit data by streams attaining high bit rate of the network capacity in the experiment.

Reliability is one of the important issues in the design of distributed computing systems (DCSs). This paper deals with the problem of task allocation in heterogeneous DCSs for maximizing system reliability with several resource constraints. Memory capacity, processing load and communication rate are major constraints in the problem. Reliability oriented task allocation problem is NP-hard, thus many algorithms were presented to find a near optimal solution. This paper presents a Hybrid of Simulated Annealing and Tabu Search (HSATS) that uses a non-monotonic cooling schedule to find a near optimal solution within reasonable time. The HSATS algorithm was implemented and evaluated through experimental studies on a large number of randomly generated instances. Results have shown that the algorithm can obtain optimal solution in most cases. When it fails to produce optimal solution, deviation is less than 0.2 percent. Therefore in terms of solution quality, HSATS is significantly better than pure Simulated Annealing.

In a distributed computing system (DCS), the scheduling of tasks comprise of two phases, task allocation and task scheduling. The allocation of tasks to different processors is required to maximize the processors synergism in order to achieve the various objectives, such as, system throughput, reliability maximization and cost minimization. The task allocation also need to satisfy a set of system constraints related to memory and link capacity. This problem has been shown as NP-Hard. Most of meta-heuristic algorithms deal with the task allocation problem as single objective or transform the multiple objectives into single objective. This paper presents a combinatorial multi-objective particle swarm optimization based (CMOPSO) algorithm to deal with the multiple conflicting objectives of task allocation problem simultaneously without transforming them to single objective. The performance of the algorithm is compared with a NSCA-II based task allocation algorithm;results manifest;that the algorithm shows good performance under different problem scales and task interaction density.
