Spontaneous Emergence of Programs from "Primordial Soup" of Functions in distributed Computer systems

This article considers a problem of possible spontaneous emergence of high level of abstraction programs from the set of independent parallel processes, which are performing different functions and using shared variables. The model proposed in the article is based on the principles of artificial chemistry and describes the distributed computing. As the results of simulations, unstable cyclic computational structures of different kinds spontaneously arose in the model. These structures are considered as implicit programs.

The availability of Healthcare Data Center (HDC) from network or machine failures has led to the appearance of new approaches to self healing data centres. Modern data centers looking to ensure the reliability of distributed computing systems (DCS) in the most critical era. Also, modern HDC need to provide highest reliability infrastructure for all distribution critical jobs and data sources including electronic health records, electronic medical records and IoT. Redundancy is the traditional technique that improves the reliability of DCS among HDC. Inherently, redundancy is a very expensive approach in terms of hardware and software resources. In this context, this paper presents an Enhanced MapReduce Agent Mobility (EMRAM) framework to maximize reliability of DCSs among HDC without redundancy. The proposed framework migrating tasks to the available machines in the in HDC when identifying unhampered machine failure. Some practical experiments are performed to evaluate the proposed (EMRAM) framework by considering different scenarios. The obtained results are compared with the most recent frameworks showing a relatively better performance and higher reliability than other recent frameworks.

Computational science is placing new demands on optimization algorithms as the size of data sets and the computational complexity of scientific models continue to increase. As these complex models have many local minima, evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are very useful for quickly finding optimal solutions in these challenging search spaces. In addition to the complex search spaces involved, calculating the objective function can be extremely demanding computationally. Because of this, distributed computation is a necessity. In order to address these computational demands, top-end distributed computing systems are surpassing hundreds of thousands of computing hosts;and as in the case of Internet based volunteer computing systems, they can also be highly heterogeneous and faulty. This work examines asynchronous strategies for distributed EAs using simulated computing environments. Results show that asynchronous EAs can scale to hundreds of thousands of computing hosts while being highly resilient to heterogeneous and faulty computing environments, something not possible for traditional distributed EAs which require synchronization. While the simulation not only provides insight as to how asynchronous EAs perform on distributed computing environments with different latencies and heterogeneity, it also serves as a sanity check because live distributed systems require problems with high computation to communication ratios and traditional benchmark problems cannot be used for meaningful analysis due to their short computation times.

This paper studies the reliability of a distributed computing system where the task on a computer may be aborted if it is still not finished until a time threshold. The mission is regarded as successful if all these tasks are completed by at least one computer before a pre-specified time. An abort policy model is proposed and a multi-valued decision diagram approach is adopted to evaluate the system reliability for any given abort policy. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the applications.

The increased demand for big data processing has led to the development of distributed computing and data storage technologies. However, building an efficient distributed system is a rather difficult task and has a few problems. The problems of building a distributed system are related to its security and reliability. In this paper, research is carried out related to increasing the reliability of a distributed storage system. During the study, an analysis of load balancing methods was carried out. Based on the analysis, a hybrid load balancing method was compiled. The hybrid method is based on the Least Connection and Weighted Round Robin methods. This method allows you to effectively balance the load in distributed storage systems, which increases their reliability. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

A novel leader election algorithm based on resources for ring networks

The leader node in a distributed computing system is responsible to establish coordination among all other nodes that are situated apart geographically. Selection of a suitable leader is one of the major and challenging problems. In this paper, a novel leader election algorithm is proposed based on resources of each node in a ring network. All the nodes compute resource strength values by considering available resources like CPU, memory capacity, and residual energy. A node with the highest resource strength over the network is elected as the leader. The proposed algorithm has also considered sudden failure of the nodes particularly when it is the leader node. Moreover, addition of new nodes is also considered. The proposed algorithm shows improvement on message complexity over the network and resource-based priority generation, which helps in efficient election of the leader. To validate, the proposed algorithm is extensively simulated as well as real-life hardware experiment is also done. In the experiment, 2 cases are considered with different weight of the resources, and consequent effects are shown. The results are also compared with the existing algorithms, and it is observed that the proposed work comparably performs better that the existing related algorithms.

Architecture of a VOD system with proxy servers

We present an architecture of a VOD system employing proxy servers. The proposed VOD system provides efficient and reliable VOD services and solves the problems caused by traditional VOD systems of centralized, hierarchical or distributed architecture. The proxy servers are placed between video servers and user systems. The proxy server is a small size video server that has not only caching function but also intelligence such as VCR-like video stream control or navigation of other proxy/video servers to search for a selected video program. Using a VOD system of the proposed architecture, the VOD services can be provided to more users because it reduces the workload of video servers and network traffic, me provide the performance model of the system. Service availability is also analyzed. The proposed architecture shows better performance and availability than the traditional VOD architectures.

Fault-tolerant, real-time communication in distributed systems is very important yet difficult to achieve. Traditional protocols like the TCP/IP achieve reliable communication through acknowledgment and retransmission schemes, where one achieves the reliability at the cost of performance. In this paper, we discuss how both the timeliness and fault-tolerance of communication can be achieved by using the concept of real-time channel [1] and exploring the inherent spatial redundancy of a given network topology. Specifically, we show how isolated failure immune real-time channels can be established in wrapped hexagonal mesh networks, thus ensuring timely delivery of messages in the presence of network component failures as long as the failures are isolated. This kind of fault-tolerance cannot be achieved with other commonly-known topologies like rings, rectangular meshes, and hypercubes. The proposed approach is to be implemented in an experimental distributed real-time system, called HARTS [2], whose construction is underway.

The system of vector clocks is an essential tool for designing distributed algorithms and reasoning about them. We present an efficient implementation of vector clocks that reduces the size of timestamp related information to be transferred in a message. The implementation assumes FIFO message delivery and is resilient to changes in the topology of the distributed system.

Task scheduling for heterogeneous systems using an incremental approach

Effective scheduling of the tasks of a distributed application is one of the key factors in achieving improved performance. It results in an adequate utilization of the underlying resources and also reduces the total execution time of the application. Generating an optimal schedule for a distributed application is not a trivial task as it exists in the class of NP-complete problems. In this paper, a novel strategy called incremental subgraph earliest finish time (INCSEFT) is proposed. It is aimed at scheduling tasks on heterogeneous systems. It incorporates the use of a subgraph that grows incrementally by adding critical paths. At each step, the scheduling strategy attempts to minimize the schedule length. Considering a large set of nodes at an instance makes this approach perform better than other scheduling strategies used for heterogeneous systems. The experiments performed with several graphs show that the INCSEFT strategy produces significant improvement over the well-known HEFT, LOOKAHEAD and CEFT strategies used for scheduling heterogeneous systems.
