In this paper we propose the architecture of a generic fault-tolerant graphical environment, and a tool to customise it for a concrete environment. This graphical Environment for Programming distributed Applications (EPDA) is tailorable and includes support for deployment and dynamic reconfiguration of distributed applications. Its minimum functionality comes from the development of an Environment for Programming Ada distributed Applications which has been adapted to Glade and to the Group_IO communication library. It can be installed as robust to guarantee the continuity of its service in presence of node failures.

Adaptive array antenna is one of the attractive technologies for cellular mobile communication systems for increase of capacity. For CDMA cellular base stations, we have designed a distributed configuration of array antenna, which is synchronized among two-dimensional arrange of sub-array antenna modules. This configuration has a capacity to accept flexible number of or arrange of sub-array antenna modules. All modules that formed array antenna are synchronized to make appropriate beam forming by the method of one-by-one addition between each adjacent module. We have built a prototype of this distributed array antenna with our original continuous auto-calibration circuits. The experimental performance of this calibration circuit was 0.1dB and 1degree accuracy. The prototype array antenna has experimentally performed less than 2dB ripple and 11.3-degree roll-off (between -3dB point and -20dB point) of sector wide beams and 12.7-degree beam width (-3dB) of user dedicated narrow beams.

This paper deals with an electric energy storage system (ESS) of distributed structure composed from the hybrid energy storage modules (HESM). Each module consists of the lead acid battery and the supercapacitor (SC) pack, which are connected to each other by the bidirectional DC-DC converter. The uniqueness of the proposed structure is that the DC-bus of whole ESS is formed by means of adding the SC pack voltages of all modules. For low voltage modules, it is proposed to use an ecologically acceptable SC with aqueous solution of KOH. Such SC has a low production cost, but also low voltage, no more than 1.2 V. For increasing specific characteristics of the SC with nonorganic electrolyte, the technology of its production was developed. This technology includes the next stages: receiving the biocarbon material from flax fibers with a developed specific surface area, carbonization and activation of the flax biocarbon at optimum regimes, its doping with iron, folding the electrodes, filling them with electrolyte, and sealing the cells. A control system was developed for the created HESM. The proposed HESM is built by Matlab/Simulink to verify its feasibility. Finally, a prototype of HESM is also set up to test the performance.

This paper presents a reconfigurable band-pass filtering PIN Diode switch. The cylindrical substrate integrated cavity (SIC) and combline SIC resonators with distributed configuration are effectively employed to realize an eight-state compact filtering switch with a third-degree Chebyshev response. The proposed switch operates at 13 GHz with a bandwidth of 400 MHz, return loss of 20 dB, and insolation of better than 38 dB. The synthesized, simulated and measured results agree well, verifying the unique performance and robustness of the proposed solution.

Several software systems have been developed that make distributed applications available to an application programmer Although these systems provide functionality for the design, execution, monitoring and control of distributed applications, they are not web-based. The increasing use of Web technology for Internet and Intranet applications is making the web an attractive framework for solving distributed applications, in particular because the interface can be made platform independent. This paper presents a web-based environment which provides remote management of distributed applications. The environment allows the user to configure, execute, monitor and dynamically reconfigure distributed components. In addition the tool tolerates node failures to ensure service availability, and can be tailored to different distributed application platforms. The proposed tool is developed without changing the front-end web server and does not require manual software installation on the client side as long as a client web browser is available.

This paper presents a method for parallel initialization of distributed simulation systems that consists of a two phases setup. Object instantiation and setup are split in Config and Post Bind phases to permit fast creation times allowing distribution of initialization tasks among different nodes and removing the ordering requirement between the initialization of interdependent objects. A framework of references is presented to facilitate the use of remote objects in a MPI environment using proxies to access local and remote variables, served by a reference name server built into the simulation engine.

This paper presents a graphical environment for programming distributed applications by means of GLADE. This environment facilitates the configuration and execution of Ada distributed applications. The environment frees the user from learning the GLADE configuration language, and keeps the state and the configuration of the system in a database for reconfiguration purposes. In order to provide fault tolerance the database can be replicated;the failure is then automatically masked by the graphical environment.

The Remote Control Centers (RCC) represent the third hierarchical level of the ENEL (Italian Electricity Board) Power Generation and Transmission Control System. The power system control is performed by the National Control Center (NCC) and the eight Area Control Centers (ACC). The RCCs are responsible for carrying out the switching operations and the monitoring of unmanned generation and transmission stations. The RCCs of the new generation will replace the existing RCCs which control the majority of the stations (about 80%). The paper highlights the characteristics of the RCCs distributed intelligence configuration and its most significant functional and architectural aspects.
