With particular focus on distributed situational awareness in defense and security applications, we propose a value-of-information based middleware framework as a paradigm shift from crawl-index based centralized search. The proposed approach seeks to improve efficiency in search and retrieval by transforming sensors into programmable information points and enabling ubiquitous data and software flows through the infrastructure of the distributed network. We explain the different components of such a middleware framework to organize, tag and notify emerging spatial, temporal and causal patterns from the sensor measurements. We conclude the paper with a brief discussion on the top-down programming model that can realize the framework as a reconfigurable sensor query system.

Recent activities in Japan to deploy a data grid for high energy physics will be reported. Japanese collaboration of LHC-ATLAS experiment is now preparing a Tier-2 analysis center at Tokyo. Several institutes/universities have grid facilities and they are connected to the Tokyo Tier-2 center. Collaborators of Phenix of RHIC at BNL and CDF of Tevatron at FNAL are also using grid tools for data transmission. KEK-CRC is also hosting the Belle experiment VO and is running a site for it as a part of LCG. A general purpose virtual organization for Japanese high energy physics society is to be launched. The ability to use data stored in the current Earth Observing System (EOS) archives for studying regional or global phenomena is highly dependent on having a detailed understanding of the data's internal structure and physical implementation. Gaining this understanding and applying it to data reduction is a time-consuming task that must be undertaken before the core investigation can begin. This is an especially difficult challenge when science objectives require users to deal with large multi-sensor data sets that are usually of different formats, structures, and resolutions. The NASA Goddard Earth Sciences data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) has taken a major step towards meeting, this challenge by developing an infrastructure that supports a Web interface that allows users to perform interactive analysis online without downloading any data. The underlying infrastructure that integrates all the components is called GES-DISC Interactive Online Visualization and analysis Infrastructure or "Giovanni." Giovanni provides interactive, online, analysis tools for data users to facilitate their research.

Unlike distributeddata entry, which is used in many large epidemiologic studies and multicenter clinical trials, distributed data analysis is a relatively new concept. This paper reports on the usefulness of such a system in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study. CARDIA distributes the entire examination dataset to participating centers soon after completion of each round of data collection. The process was designed to encourage more numerous, diverse, and rapid publications, and to allow for more efficient use of the manpower and expertise in centers. Responsibilities of the coordinating center have changed from a conventional coordinating center but remain substantial due to the need for collating, monitoring, verifying, and documenting the distributed data analysis (DDA) system. DDA is successful from the standpoint of implementation and operation-21 manuscripts representing work analyzed at six participating centers had been submitted for publication within 3.5 years of the completion of the baseline examination.
