A survey of the literature on distributed data base Management Systems is presented. The problems associated with distributing data throughout a network are summarized into two major areas: data Distribution and data Transfer. Each area is described detailing some of the major proposed solutions to the problems therein. The intention here is to provide the reader with an overview and an extensive bibliography for further study on any aspect of distributed DBMS. © 1978.

A distributed medical data base. Network software design

This paper describes the software design aspects of a distributed medical data base, to be implemented on a homogeneous minicomputer loop network of PDP-11/45s, using the UNIX operating system. Eash user at a node, operating within a virtual user machine, is seen to interact with the file machines of either the local or distant node(s), through his local virtual network access machine. This last resource has two logical components: a switch, which routes messages, and a network interface. © 1976.

In this paper, the problem of determining an optimal file allocation in a distributed database is considered. The solution method is based on the isomorphism between the non-redundant file allocation problem and the “multiple choice constraints” knapsack problem, which is a well-known, classical problem of operations research. An ‘ad hoc’ branch and bound algorithm is then introduced for the redundant file allocation problem. Computational results showing the efficiency of the proposed technique are included.

On the design of elementary distributed systems

distributed systems range from the elementary to the very complex. This paper is concerned with the design of elementary systems in which there are no multiple copies of files, transactions exhibit a high degree of geographic locality, and the network topology is a tree. Issues considered include the selection of processors at different sites in the network, line topology and bandwidths, and allocation of application functions to processors. A case study is presented. © 1979.

SDD-1, A System for distributed databases, is a distributed database system being developed by Computer Corporation of America (CCA), Cambridge, MA. SDD-1 permits data to be stored redundantly at several database sites in order to enhance the reliability and responsiveness of the system and to facilitate upward scaling of system capacity. This paper describes the method used by SDD-1 for updating data that are stored redundantly. Redundant updating can be costly because it may potentially involve extensive intercomputer communication overhead in order to lock all copies of data being updated. The method described here avoids this overhead by identifying cases in which it is not necessary to perform this global database locking. The identification of transactions that do not require global locking is based on a predefinition of transaction classes performed by the database administrator using an analysis technique described herein. The classes defined are used at run time to decide what level of synchronization is needed for a given transaction. It is important to note that this predefinition activity in no way limits the transactions that the system can accept;it merely permits more efficient execution of those types of transactions that were anticipated. © 1978, IEEE. Presently, DCS is not a just technical tool of control of production units, but it's developed to be placed at the centre of the process as an essential tool for mastering and managing of production units. These technological advances are transforming DCS strategic equipment in plants and companies in general. It's necessary to properly develop and highlight the minimum requirements to be imposed when choosing of DCS, especially for production units of phosphate derivatives having specificities and particular constraints, in order to achieve the required performance and take account of the requirements of the processes operated. OCP has introduced the DCS and their new technologies since 1997 in the production units of Phosphoric Acid and Fertilizers. Now, a perfect mastering of the development of specifications and a confirmed knowledge on the functioning of DCS are certainly acquired by the local skills of OCP. As a result, the need to take benefit and exploit more resources and new features of DCS is logically emerged. This has given rise to development of other increasing axes of improvement in the production units. OCP included two main lines: the opening of DCS to other networks of the Company and the operating fully automatic and smart of production units through the use of advanced controls such as predictive control, fuzzy logic, optimal neural. Functional coordination on homogeneous distributed computer control system

The principal effort of this paper is in the development and introduction of new software architecture to the proposed homogeneous distributed computer system. Our motivations concerning this software architecture are to synthesize the total system self-organized or fault-tolerant and to improve application software productivity due to high reusability and maintainability, as well. Our primary approach is, at first, to decompose total system function into many interactive but homogeneous sub-functions, to set up a software cell composed of application tasks and local files for implementation of each of these sub-functions and then to provide software buses over these software cells for functional coordination. Practically, here, we propose the distributed Task Management System (DTMS) and the distributed data-base Management System for software buses. While these processors physically distributed and located at node computers, they are well organized to synthesize software buses.

A distributed Graphics Visualisation System in a Computer Network

A realisation of a distributed graphics visualization system working as subsystem o-f distributed star-type network system for tracking and control of vehicles-fleet in a great town is presented. The town map graphic information is distributed between the computers located in the star-centre and in the vertices connected to the centre through phone channels. The vehicles input data are centrally processed and according to current demands are dispatched to color graphics displays connected to the computers. The posibilities for further system optimisation on existing hardware are considered.
