Organizations adopt new technologies, ultimately, to enhance their competitive position and profitability. A distributed database management system (DDBMS) is an example of a technology that may enhance a company's profitability but is also likely to change the way it does business. Specifically, DDBMS adoption may disturb the locus of power, alter the organizational structure, and change the culture of a company. This exploratory study examines the organizational factors that influence the likelihood of DDBMS adoption. It identifies organizational hurdles to adoption, offers an agenda for research validation, and proposes strategies for overcoming the identified hurdles.

Synchronizing Disaggregated Data Structures with One-Sided RDMA: Pitfalls, Experiments and Design

Remote data structures built with one-sided Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) are at the heart of many disaggregated database management systems today. Concurrent access to these data structures by thousands of remote workers necessitates a highly efficient synchronization scheme. Remarkably, our investigation reveals that existing synchronization schemes display substantial variations in performance and scalability. Even worse, some schemes do not correctly synchronize, resulting in rare and hard-to-detect data corruption. Motivated by these observations, we conduct the first comprehensive analysis of one-sided synchronization techniques and provide general principles for correct synchronization using one-sided RDMA. Our research demonstrates that adherence to these principles not only guarantees correctness but also results in substantial performance enhancements. This article is an extended version of [72] in which we investigate modern 400G NICs. Our findings reveal that the challenges persist even with new generations of NICs. Consequently, we turn our attention to alternative networking hardware, such as smart switches, to address some of the limitations associated with one-sided synchronization.

Learned Sharding Toward Sustainable Communications and Networking in Blockchains

Sharding scales blockchain by grouping blockchain nodes into committees each of which processes a portion of the total transactions in parallel. The issue with sharding is the enormous volume of cross-shard transactions, which results in high communication costs to ensure transaction atomicity. The account-based sharding problem can be viewed as the vertex classification problem of the account-transaction graph. However, prior studies employed traditional graph partitioning algorithms for sharding, failing to make full use of the account relationship in the graph structure. In this work, we aim to address the sharding problem from the perspective of deep learning that can learn the graph structure toward sustainable communications. We propose an efficient deep learning-based sharding scheme (DLS) based on the graph attention (GAT) network. The account and transaction information are input into the GAT for semi-supervised training and account/vertex classification. Since the performance may degrade in the case of limited label information, we incorporate the label propagation method to acquire the label information of non-trained accounts. We also extend our approach to deal with the new account scenario without retraining the neural network. Extensive experiments on Ethereum data demonstrate that our proposed DLS can effectively reduce the number of cross-shard transactions.

Many researchers have studied the problem of providing statistical analysis for centralized databases, but no one has carefully looked at the architectures and issues arising when data are distributed over many sites. Two approaches might be taken to providing an architecture for a system that supports statistical analyses in cases where the underlying raw data are distributed among different database management systems (DBMS) on different computing facilities at different sites. One way is for the distributed DBMS to obtain raw data from local DBMSs and provide statistical analyses at the global level. The other way is to distribute as much as possible of the statistical analyses to local sites and use partially processed data from the sites as input to global analysis procedures. With this approach, which is currently being used as the basis of an implementation, only summary data are normally moved between sites.

Alternative distributed database management system (DDBMS) configurations lead to different communications costs in a distributed network, and changes in database usage patterns affect different configurations in different ways. Measurement and comparison of the volumes of data communications required to support alternative DDBMS configurations are performed. A model of the communication costs associated with several alternative DDBMS configurations is provided, and the impact of changing database usage patterns on those costs is examined. Some of the alternative DDBMS configurations involve fully partitioning the system database, while others allow full or partial replication of data. The query proportion, composition of updates, and proportion of adds versus deletes versus modifications are examined. Results indicate that changes in usage have a substantial impact on relative communications costs of the alternative configurations.

This paper presents an adaptive framework for processing a window-based multi-way join query over distributed data streams. The framework integrates distributed plan modification and distributed plan migration within the same scope by using a building block called the node operator set ( NOS). An NOS is housed in each node that participates in the join execution, and specifies the set of atomic operations to be performed locally at the host node to execute its share of the global execution plan. The plan modification and migration techniques presented are for the case of updating the NOSs centralized at a single node and the case of updating them distributed at each node. The plan modification is triggered by the change of stream statistics and adjusts the join execution order and placement greedily to satisfy a cost invariant. The plan migration uses the distributed track strategy to accelerate the migration of window extents to new nodes. The migration of all window extents is synchronized. Experiments confirm the effectiveness of the developed adaptive framework on reducing the join execution cost and indicate a small additional adaptation-overhead for distributing the NOS update.

Enhancing DDBMS Performance through RFO-SVM Optimized Data Fragmentation: A Strategic Approach to Machine Learning Enhanced systems

Effective data fragmentation is essential in enhancing the performance of distributed database management systems (DDBMS) by strategically dividing extensive databases into smaller fragments distributed across multiple nodes. This study emphasizes horizontal fragmentation and introduces an advanced machine learning algorithm, Red Fox Optimization-based Support Vector Machine (RFO-SVM), designed for optimizing the data fragmentation process. The input database undergoes meticulous pre-processing to address missing data concerns, followed by analysis through RFO-SVM. This algorithm efficiently classifies features and target labels based on class labels. The RFO algorithm optimizes critical SVM parameters, including the kernel, kernel parameter, and boundary parameter, leveraging the accuracy metric. The resulting classified data serves as fragments for the fragmentation process. To ensure precision in fragmentation, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) allocates these fragments to diverse nodes within the DDBMS, optimizing the total allocation cost as the fitness function. The proposed model, implemented in Python, significantly contributes to the efficient fragmentation and allocation of databases in distributed systems, thereby enhancing overall performance and scalability.

Scalable distributed Inverted List Indexes in Disaggregated Memory

Memory disaggregation separates compute (CPU) and main memory resources into disjoint physical units to enable elastic and independent scaling. Connected via high-speed RDMA-enabled networks, compute nodes can directly access remote memory. This setting often requires complex protocols with many network roundtrips as memory nodes have near-zero compute *** this paper, we design a scalable distributed inverted list index for disaggregated memory architectures. An inverted list index maps a set of terms to lists of documents that contain this term. Current solutions either partition the index horizontally or vertically with severe limitations in the disaggregated memory setting due to data and access skew, high network latency, or out-of-memory errors. Our method partitions lists into fixed-size blocks and spreads them across the memory nodes to balance skewed accesses. Block-based list processing keeps the memory footprint of compute nodes low and masks latency by interleaving remote accesses with expensive list operations. In addition, we propose efficient updates with optimistic concurrency control and read-write conflict detection. Our experiments confirm the efficiency and scalability of our method.
