Support for interoperability among autonomous, heterogeneous database systems is emerging as a key information management problem for the 1990s. A key challenge for achieving interoperability among multiple database systems is to provide capabilities to allow information units and resources to be flexibly and dynamically combined and interconnected while at the same time, preserve the investment in and autonomy of each existing system. This research specifically focuses on two key aspects of this: (1) how to discover the location and content of relevant, non-local information units, and (2) how to identify and resolve the semantic heterogeneity that exists between related information in different database components. We demonstrate and evaluate our approach using the remote-exchange experimental prototype system, which supports information sharing and exchange from the above perspective.< >

We propose a new model for distributed programming, called associative broadcast, that achieves a high level of communication abstraction by using as its fundamental mode of communication a form of logical broadcast. Each message contains a predicate that specifies the local states of the objects that are to receive the message, rather than their identifies. Message delivery is asynchronous and requires no knowledge of the global slate. Associative broadcast exploits the broadcasting capabilities of distributed systems, and enables straightforward specification of state-based communication. We use state-based communication to obtain a new solution to the partitioned-network consistency problem in distributed databases.< >

There are many problems facing scientists in their efforts to use computers to manage, access, and analyze data. One serious problem is the heterogeneity of data sources. Previous research into accessing heterogeneous data has not addressed problems with accessing large data sources that are not managed by database management systems. We believe that an object-oriented database management system can be used to implement an object-oriented heterogeneous database (OOHDB) that efficiently addresses the problem of heterogeneity among large scientific property databases. The object-oriented data model provides a powerful modeling paradigm for representing complex scientific data. Objects within the OOHDB hide heterogeneity among various data sources. Efficient access to external data is achieved by representing external data with a small amount of data stored within the OOHDB.< >

Applications and services in ubiquitous computing systems often interact in a context-dependent, reactive manner. How information flows, and what services communicate when, is determined by the context of the physical space, the context of users, and the services that are available. Existing discovery systems provide basic facilities for finding services based on their static descriptions in the form of attributes. Context-dependent attributes are not included in the service advertisements as they may in turn be computed and stored in other services. We propose an infrastructure, called River that provides various context-dependent, reactive communication primitives. These primitives are implemented using a single underlying technique called relational query based dispatching (RQD), which views the set of services in the system as a federation of databases, the discovery service as a distributed query processor for these databases, and communication as a combination of query processing and dispatching. We describe the design and implementation of the River infrastructure. We also show that the context-dependent query processing within the discovery service can actually reduce the lookup latency with little effect on overall throughput.

With the inception of technology in communication networks such as ATM, it will be possible to run multimedia applications on future integrated networks. Synchronization of the related media data is one of the key characteristics of a multimedia system. In this paper we present a scheme for synchronization of multimedia data across a network where the accuracy of detecting asynchronization and predicting the future asynchrony is variable and can be tailored to the intended application. The multimedia data when sent across the network may also be stored at an intermediate node and later retrieved for display. We extend the scheme and present a mechanism wherein synchronization of all the possible temporal constructs is supported and not restricted to the "in-parallel" construct which is only one of the thirteen possible temporal relations.< >

Increasing complexity and diversity of future information systems call for new approaches that support intelligent and integrated access to heterogeneous, autonomous, and distributed information systems. Future software developments also exert strong demands on facilities for supporting code reuse, tool integration, cooperative programming, programming in the large and management of large-scale software projects. We have proposed a view mechanism that is intended to meet the needs of future data and software engineering applications. We present the design and implementation of the Zeus View System (ZVS) in a large-scale distributed computing environment. The results and our experience with the implementation issues of the ZVS are presented.< >

Cooperation is both a key concept to deal with complex design tasks and an ambiguous notion interpreted in a variety of ways. In particular, cooperation is considered from its behavioral aspects relating to the course of the dialogue (communication), and from a synchronizational viewpoint with respect to coordination issues. From the database point of view, the second perspective is more familiar, and is thus scrutinized to considerable detail. Especially, the dynamic aspects of interactions are of paramount interest for interactive, multi-user databases. In this paper, first some conceptual foundations on interaction in teams are established. Second, a new concept named conversational team-work is defined. Conversational team-work is a joint manner of data manipulation for dynamically interacting database users.< >

Information systems are often implemented as closed, monolithic applications that isolate information and functionality from other applications in a computing environment. Open hypermedia architectures, on the other hand, tend to promote information and tool integration. We examine hypermedia and information system integration from a technical perspective, and argue the case for using open system techniques to achieve integration. We believe that specialized information systems should be integrated into an overarching hypermedia model and system architecture in order to bring hypermedia functionality to these systems. This approach optimizes the functional partitioning, extensibility, scalability, and overall capability of a hypermedia-based computing environment. By way of example, we describe our experiences developing an open hypermedia system prototype, called SP2, that satisfies many of the requirements for large-scale integration of diverse information systems.< >

A timed Petri-net model of a distributed multimedia database architecture is presented. The model handles both static and dynamic media that cannot be achieved by static approach. ALCHEMIST is a general purpose object-oriented transformation generator. ALCHEMIST provides a new approach to developing transformations between any well-defined representations. It allows users to define the syntactic structure of the data representations and the related structure associations with a grammar notation. These grammars can then be augmented with semantic operations. From this description a persistent object-oriented representation is formed and a transformation module is generated automatically. This transformation module relies on an object representation of the parse tree. The principles underlying ALCHEMIST are discussed and its object-oriented design decisions are described.< >
