In this paper, we address the challenges in supporting reliability and scalability in societal-scale notification systems that aim to reach large populations with customized alerts. We explore fault tolerance (FT) techniques in the context of Big Data Publish-Subscribe systems (BDPS), a scalable hierarchical architecture, that meshes big-data platforms (to store and operate on large volumes of data) with a distributed pub/sub broker network (to manage and communicate with a large number of end subscribers). The role of brokers in this architecture is critical since they serve to mediate interactions between subscribers and the backend big data system. We propose the REAPS (REliable Active Publish Subscribe) framework that can handle different classes of broker failures including randomized failures and geographically-correlated failures (as in a natural disaster). REAPS implements a low overhead fault tolerance service using a primary-backup approach; key features include the ability to exploit subscription similarity among brokers and techniques for quasi-active state replication to support fast recovery and delivery guarantees of notification services. We implement REAPS and conduct measurement studies on a prototype BDPS platform using real world usecases. We further evaluate REAPS under various failure scenarios to explore the scalability and performance of our proposed FT mechanisms via simulation studies.

In distributed environment, in order to manage and share data resources better, tracking the origin and evolution of the data is needed to obtain the data provenance information, used to judge the quality and credibility of the data. In order to provide the framework basis which is used to analyze the dependent relationships of data provenance, a tracking framework for distributed environment based on semantic annotation of data provenance is proposed and functions of specific modules in this framework are described. The framework is also explored in different perspective of time dimension and semantic dimension.

This paper discusses the modern approach of the implementation of Software as a Service (SaaS) for NASA as a way to reduce cost and increase efficiency. The Grid XML Datastore Framework is an extension of SaaS framework based on eXtensible Database technology (XDB). This is implemented to support the Innovative Partnership Program (IPP) for its Technology Transfer System (NTTS) project. NTTS supports NASA's entire technology transfer process and is the agency's one system with all of its technological assets. NTTS is the primary IT backbone that supports the entire technology transfer process for NASA, which includes Invention Disclosure, Intellectual Property Management, Awards Management and Payment, Software Release Management, Agreements & Partnerships Management, Success Stories Management and Leads Development. The system is intended to have three interfaces serving three distinct communities, mainly agency-wide, center specific and the public. The SaaS implementation deploys the software as an application hosted as a NASA service, which is provided across the Internet. By eliminating the need to install and run the application on the customer's own computer, SaaS alleviates the customer's burden of software maintenance, ongoing operation, and support. Using SaaS can also reduce the up-front expense of software purchases, through less costly, on-demand pricing. From a NASA software acquisition perspective, NASA pays one time for the database and storage and thus third-party application plug in on demand. This paper describes how NTTS utilizes and benefits Grid XML Datastore Framework (GXD Framework), an open and extensible database architecture that supports efficient and flexible integration of heterogeneous and distributed information resources. GXD Framework provides a novel "schema-less" database approach using a document-centered object-relational XML database mapping. Many scientific fields routinely generate huge datasets. In many cases, these datasets are not static but rapidly grow in size. Handling these types of datasets, as well as allowing sophisticated queries necessitates scalable distributed database systems, in which scientists are efficiently able to search the datasets. In this paper we present the architecture, implementation and performance analysis of a scalable, distributed database system built on software based virtualization environments. The system architecture makes use of a software partitioning of the database based on data clustering, SQMD (single query multiple database) mechanism, a Web service interface, and virtualization software technologies. The system allows uniform access to concurrently distributed databases, using the SQMD mechanism based on the publish/subscribe paradigm. We highlight the scalability of our architecture by applying it to a database of 17 million chemical structures. In addition to simple identifier based retrieval, we will present performance results for shape similarity queries, which is extremely, time intensive with traditional architectures.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technological paradigm that aims to connect millions of networked devices to provide more complex functionality. However, the heterogeneity of application/device communication standards precludes support for interoperability, which impacts developer collaboration. There are many works that propose solutions to support syntactic and semantic interoperability in IoT context. This paper aims to propose a service capable of supporting pragmatic IoT interoperability with the goal of enriching developer collaboration. This being possible through the use of inferences and similarity calculations about information provided by the developers.

Overlay networks such as distributed hash tables offer a good solution to store, search and retrieve data in distributed systems. They are scalable, self-organizing and robust. On the other hand, distributed hash tables are only able to store and retrieve single data elements. This limitation is inefficient for future and sophisticated applications such as distributed social online networks. These applications require more advanced data structures like lists, sets or sorted trees in distributed systems. In previous works, we introduced an approach for distributed Data Structures on a distributed hash table, with low overhead and delay. To improve the retrieval of this distributed data, a Structure-Cache was added, which stores further information about structures (for example a sorted tree) in advance on nodes, to allow the system to retrieve more data elements parallel and therefore be quicker. A limitation of these caches is the need to keep them up-to-date when data is added or changed in the structure. This paper, therefore, introduces different approaches to update these Structure Caches, evaluates the functionality of these mechanisms and compares them with each other.

distributed MIMO radar systems offer tremendous advantage in the detection of airborne platforms employing stealth and are resilient to single point failure. However, when multiple targets are present over the surveillance region, the reflected signals at various receivers from these targets cannot be uniquely associated to the targets easily. Incorrect associations of the received data lead to the creation of ghost targets, and hence, de-ghosting is an inherent problem in distributed radar systems. Exploiting the geometry of the measurement model into the association process, we devise algorithms that are practically implementable and computationally feasible. In this work, a novel, efficient and fast data association scheme followed by a localization algorithm is proposed that utilizes Time-of-Arrival and Doppler frequency measurements of the targets with respect to the transmitter-receiver pairs to accurately determine 3D position and velocities of the targets. The proposed approach is non-parametric as it does not need the assumption of initial states, number of targets and their motion models. It simultaneously associates up to four targets present within a minimum horizontal separation of $100m\times 100m$ for signals of bandwidth 20MHz and any number of targets that are flying far away from this minimum separation in the observation region. It can also associate and track up to nine targets that have sequential birth and random death, flying with random realizable velocities.

In increasingly diverse areas of activity, the notion of block technology appears more and more often. What benefits and how they can be applied in the health sector will be presented in this article. This system is decentralized and cannot be controlled, and records cannot be modified. Blockchain technology offers efficiency and low health costs. In this way, the health of the population is monitored worldwide, by using an encryption program for the storage of patients' databases in diagnosis, laboratory analysis, medical imaging, medicine etc. Users are encouraged to use such a platform in a peer-to- peer market to have permanent access to medical history, and last but not least, to support the medical act for a correct diagnosis, research system and pharmaceutical industry. The objective of this paper is to achieving a technology that will make the medical system more efficient by decentralization, faster access to information and the creation of a solid database that will bring essential predictability to the system.

The spatial distribution of disease epidemiology has always been the hotspot and difficulty, information technology and GIS technology have been widely applied in epidemiological studies, along with the continuous deepening of the disease spatial analysis development. In this paper taking H1N1 flu as the research object, given that China and Shandong Province, the number of infections and deaths' data was used in geographic information system software and the statistical software for the spatial analysis. The results showed that: the number of infections and deaths in coastal areas is larger than that in inland multi-region, geographic distribution showed a change distribution trend from south to north and from east to west.
