The growing emphasis on complexity concerns for ontologies has attracted significant interest from both the researcher's and the practitioner's communities in modularization techniques as a way to decrease the complexity of managing huge ontologies. On the other hand, it has been widely pointed out that classical ontologies are not appropriate to deal with imprecise and vague knowledge, which is inherent to several real world domains. In order to handle these types of knowledge, some fuzzy extensions of classical ontologies are presented, yielding fuzzy ontologies. In this paper, we integrate modular ontologies with fuzzy ontologies, i.e., the notion of modular fuzzy ontologies is presented. Furthermore, we present an infrastructure for the representation of and reasoning with modular fuzzy ontologies based on distributed fuzzy descriptionlogics. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Finding correct semantic correspondences between heterogeneous ontologies is one of the most challenging problems in the area of semantic web technologies. As manually constructing such mappings is not feasible in realistic scenarios, a number of automatic matching tools have been developed that propose mappings based on general heuristics. As these heuristics often produce incorrect results, a manual revision is inevitable in order to guarantee the quality of generated mappings. Experiences with benchmarking matching systems revealed that the manual revision of mappings is still a very difficult problem because it has to take the semantics of the ontologies as well as interactions between mappings into account. In this article, we propose methods for supporting human experts in the task of revising automatically created mappings. In particular, we present non-standard reasoning methods for detecting and propagating implications of expert decisions on the correctness of a mapping.

The paper addresses the problem of searching relevant learning resources in social networks, shared between members, Therefore, a network of shared leaning resources is build up. We propose a distributed description logics based semantic model to share learning resources. Using the logics allows to infering additional interesting relatioships between learning resources that are not expressed by members. Moreover we provide a distributed reasoning algorithm that allows searching of all relevant learning resources in the social network.

The information society demands complete information from multiple sources, where available information is often heterogeneous and distributed. Because of semantic heterogeneities among ontologies of different information sources, it is rather difficult to integrate these local ontologies and get completely available information. In this paper, we propose a formal framework for integration of multiple ontologies from distributed information sources. To achieve this goal, implicit default information is extensively considered. We make a default extension to distributed description logics (DDL) for ontology integration and complete information query. A complete information query based on the integrated ontologies can boil down to checking default satisfiability of complex concept in accord with the query. Default satisfiability can be detected through an adapted tableau algorithm. Based on the proposed formal framework, a prototype system is developed, which can integrate strict as well as default information from multiple distributed information sources and global semantic information query can be performed.
