We consider a new scheme for distributed detection based on a ''censoring'' or ''send/no-send'' idea, The sensors are assumed to ''censor'' their observations so that each sensor sends to the fusion center only ''informative'' observations, and leaves those deemed ''uninformative'' untransmitted. The main result of this work is that with conditionally independent sensor data and under a communication rate constraint, in order to minimize the probability of error, transmission should occur if and only if the local likelihood ratio value observed by the sensor does not fall in a certain single interval. Similar results are derived from Neyman-Pearson and distance-measure viewpoints. We also discuss simplifications for the most interesting case that the fusion center threshold is high and the communication constraint is severe. We compare censoring with the more common binary-transmission framework and observe its considerable decrease in communication needs, Finally, we explore the use of feedback to achieve optimal performance with very little communication.

This paper investigates an issue of massive MIMO-based distributed detection that considers transceiver hardware impairments at both a massive-antenna fusion center (FC) and multiple single-antenna sensors. First, we derive closed-form expressions of the probability of detection and the probability of false alarm, and show that hardware impairments create finite ceilings on the achievable detection performance. Then, we formulate a constrained optimization problem as sum of linear ratios programming to maximize the detection probability. By exploiting the inherent problem structures, we further develop an algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the nonideal hardware has a fundamental impact on the distributed detection performance. More specifically, in the limit of an infinite number of antennas and infinite sensor reporting power budget, the effects of FC impairment and FC receiver noise vanish, while the sensor impairment dominates the achievable distributed detection performance.

In this paper, parallel distributed detection in wireless sensor network (WSN) is investigated. Sensors are assumed to be transmitting their local decisions to a fusion center through a wireless fading channel using cooperative transmission. To enable cooperative transmission, sensors are divided into groups where sensors in each group help each other in transmitting their decisions in a way that the fusion center receives each local decision as an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) block. The fusion center detects all OFDM blocks sent by all groups to process them in order to obtain a final (global) decision. Using this cooperative transmission scheme enables the fusion center to apply diversity combining methods in order to reduce the fading effects of the channel. Optimal and sub-optimal fusion rules are derived for such system. Simulation results are provided to show the performance improvement that can be obtained compared to the conventional system where each local decision is transmitted to the fusion center individually and no diversity technique is applied at the fusion center. Optimized spectrum sensing using distributed detection techniques for secondary user spectrum access is becoming important in Cognitive Radio (CR) systems, which have been proposed to utilize the available frequency spectrum more efficiently. For achieving best performance and ensuring minimal acceptable interference to spectrum owners, it is important to accurately sense and detect the presence or absence of primary licensed users. For this purpose, the solutions learned within the framework of distributed detection in wireless sensor networks have been considered. In this paper, we review sensing algorithms and approaches of distributed detection and their relevance to CR systems.

Most results about quantized detection rely strongly on an assumption of independence among random variables. With this assumption removed, little is known. Thus, in this paper, Bayes-optimal binary quantization for the detection of a shift in mean in a pair of dependent Gaussian random variables is studied. This is arguably the simplest meaningful problem one could consider. If results and rules are to be found, they ought to make themselves plain in this problem, For certain problem parametrizations (meaning the signals and correlation coefficient), optimal quantization is achievable via a single threshold applied to each observation-the same as under independence. In other cases, one observation is best ignored or is quantized with two thresholds;neither behavior is seen under independence. Further, and again in distinction from the case of independence, it is seen that in certain situations, an XOR fusion rule is optimal, and in these cases, the implied decision rule is bizarre. The analysis is extended to the multivariate Gaussian problem.

Locally optimum distributed detection of correlated random signals based on ranks

distributed signal detection schemes have received significant attention recently, but most research has focused on cases where the observations at the different sensors are independent and the statistical model for the observations is completely known, If the observations at the different sensors consist of noisy versions of random signals which were produced by the same source, then these observations may not be independent, It is also possible that the noise distribution may not be completely known, Cases where weak random signals are observed in possibly non-Gaussian additive noise are considered here, The focus is on cases where the sensor tests are based only on the ranks and signs of the observations, Numerical results are provided which indicate that distributed schemes based on ranks and signs are less sensitive to the exact noise statistics when compared to optimum schemes based directly on the observations, This is especially true for some cases where the actual noise distribution has heavy tails, which can cause the optimum schemes based directly on the observations to perform poorly, Analytical forms are given for the locally optimum sensor test statistics based on the ranks and signs of the observations, and we use these to find the hest distributed detection schemes for some cases, In the course of obtaining our results, a general set of necessary conditions is given which provide the analytical forms of the locally optimum distributed sensor tests for cases where the observations are discrete random variables, Conditions of this type have not been given previously.

We consider the problem of distributed soft decision fusion in a bandwidth-constrained spatially uncorrelated wireless sensor network (WSN). The WSN is tasked with the detection of an intruder transmitting an unknown signal over a fading channel. Existing distributed consensus-based fusion rules algorithms only ensure equal combining of local data and in the case of bandwidth-constrained WSNs, we show that their performance is poor and does not converge across the sensor nodes (SNs). Motivated by this fact, we propose a two-step distributed quantized fusion rule algorithm where in the first step the SNs collaborate with their neighbors through error-free, orthogonal channels (the SNs exchange quantized information matched to the channel capacity of each link). In the second step, local 1-bit decisions generated in the first step are shared among neighbors to yield a consensus. A binary hypothesis testing is performed at any arbitrary SN to optimally declare the global decision. Simulations show that our proposed quantized two-step distributed detection algorithm approaches the performance of the unquantized centralized (with a fusion center) detector and its power consumption is shown to be 50% less than the existing (unquantized) conventional algorithm.

The distributed hosts in the Internet are organized into a P2P network by Chord protocol for detection. The detection node uses the CUSUM's sensitivity to the slight change to detect the change in the amount of packets to destination address. Upon the abnormality detected, it is broadcast based on the node trust. The response nodes use space similarity algorithm to calculate the similarity between request node and response node. The victim end makes a comprehensive decision whether the DDoS attack happens. The scheme detects DDoS at the source end;it can prevent the DDoS attack by means of forged IP address and random IP address and trace the origin of the attack hosts. The experimental results indicate that our scheme has better performance than CUSUM and time similarity algorithm single deployed. It can reach as high as 96.1% detection rate and with only 6.9% false positives rate.

In this work, we propose a sequential fusion scheme for distributed detection in an inhomogeneous sensing environment. More specifically, the transmissions of sensors are ordered according to the observation quality and the communication channel quality to reduce energy consumption in wireless sensor networks. We devise the corresponding stopping and decision rules, as well as two transmission ordering rules, based on the log-likelihood ratio and mutual information, respectively. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can reduce the required number of transmissions substantially, while achieving the same detection performance as the conventional maximum a posteriori probability fusion scheme.

A key component of the Third Offset Strategy proposed by the United States Department of Defense is the use of unmanned autonomous systems to deter potential conflicts. Collaborative autonomy technologies are also being explored by the private sector, which is rapidly pushing towards the deployment of self-driving vehicles. For areas affected by disaster, autonomous drone swarms can assist with search and rescue operations by surveilling large regions quickly without exposing emergency responders to risk prematurely. A substantial amount of progress has been made in distributed sensing research over the last few years. However, simulation results for applications that require complex inter-agent communications have rarely been demonstrated at scale;these simulations are generally executed using tens or hundreds of agents rather than the thousands or tens of thousands envisioned for large autonomous swarms. We address this deficit here by presenting two contributions. First, we extend our previous work on efficient, distributed algorithms for weak radiation source detection to accommodate the use case of surveillance across a very wide area. We then demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithms at scale using a parallelized version of the ns-3 discrete event simulator.
