In this paper, we consider the problem of distributed detection with binary sensors over a noisy multiaccess channel. Under the assumption of conditionally independent sensor observations, we investigate the optimal decision regions at the fusion centre. For a special case, it is shown that the optimal fusion rule can be reduced to a simple threshold test on the signal received by the fusion centre. We will demonstrate that the traditional amplitude-scaling approach to satisfy the power constraint is suboptimal. With a given power budget, a solution featuring in the joint optimization of the local mapping rule and the fusion rule is proposed and is shown to lead to a gain in performance.

The goal of this work is to propose a distributed detection method for a network of radars interchanging their measurements through pulse-position modulation. The proposed approach does not need the presence of a fusion center and it is then fully decentralized. The approach is robust against node failures, as the only requirement to get the network gain is that the whole network remains connected, i.e., for every pair of nodes, there is a path, possibly composed of multiple hops, joining them. The decentralized approach is based on a distributed consensus mechanism. However, when conventional consensus algorithms are implemented over realistic channels, the receiver noise gives rise to an error on the final decision statistic that linearly increases with time. We avoid this inconvenient by properly modifying the consensus algorithm to make it suitable for communications over noisy channels. We analyze the performance of the proposed system considering the presence of both observation and communication noise present in the interaction among the radars. In particular, we show that even with a non-coherent integration, the whole system is able to achieve a sensitivity gain equal to the number of radars.

Performance Analysis of distributed Decision Fusion Using A Multilevel Censoring Scheme in Wireless Sensor Networks

Sensor-censoring schemes have been widely applied to distributed detection to achieve the goal of energy saving in limited-energy wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In the traditional censoring scheme, the sensor transmits data to the fusion center (FC) only when the reliability is beyond a specified threshold, and hereby, energy saving is achieved. To further exploit the energy-efficiency capability of the censoring decision scheme, this paper proposes a new multilevel sensor-censoring scheme. As opposed to our earlier proposed three-region censoring scheme, the number of censoring levels in the proposed scheme is not restricted. A criterion on computing the reliability of the observation in each region is quantitatively determined, which controls the power of the signal transmitted to the FC. When the observation falls within the region with high reliability, the power of the transmitted signal is high, and vice versa. Both soft- and hard-decision fusion rules under the considered multilevel censoring strategy are investigated. For a given fusion rule, the main problem of this work is to minimize the error probability of the global decisions made by the FC by obtaining the best region allocation on the observation, which corresponds to the optimum multilevel censoring regions. The performance of the proposed multilevel censoring scheme is examined in terms of both energy saving and error performance. We compare the multilevel censoring scheme with the conventional scheme, which censors no sensor observations. The results show that the multilevel censoring scheme not only offers us a more flexible design of the censoring strategy but consumes much less energy as well, compared with the conventional scheme when the same error probability constraint is given. In addition, the obtained result shows that the superiority of the multilevel censoring scheme becomes more remarkable when the signal strength of the sensor observations is small.

Channel-Aware Decision Fusion in distributed MIMO Wireless Sensor Networks: Decode-and-Fuse vs. Decode-then-Fuse

We study channel-aware binary-decision fusion over a shared Rayleigh flat-fading channel with multiple antennas at the Decision Fusion Center (DFC). We present the optimal rule and derive sub-optimal fusion rules, as alternatives with improved numerical stability, reduced complexity and lower system knowledge required. The set of rules is derived following both "Decode-and-Fuse" and "Decode-then-Fuse" approaches. Simulation results for performances are presented both under Neyman-Pearson and Bayesian frameworks. The effect of multiple antennas at the DFC for the presented rules is analyzed, showing corresponding benefits and limitations. Also, the effect on performances as a function of the number of sensors is studied under a total power constraint.

Spatio-Temporal Diffusion Strategies for Estimation and detection Over Networks

We present diffusion algorithms for distributed estimation and detection over networks that endow all nodes with both spatial cooperation abilities and temporal processing abilities. Each node in the network is allowed to share information locally with its neighbors;this step amounts to sharing and processing of spatial data. At the same time, each node is allowed to filter and process past estimates to improve estimation accuracy through an overall collaborative process. In this manner, the resulting distributed algorithms consist of three stages: adaptation, spatial processing, and temporal processing. Moreover, the order of these three stages can be interchanged leading to a total of six variations. The results indicate that whether temporal processing is performed before or after adaptation, the strategy that performs adaptation before spatial cooperation leads to smaller mean-square error. The additional temporal processing step is useful in combating perturbations due to noise over the communications links. We further describe an application in the context of distributed detection and provide computer simulations to illustrate and support the findings.

Does More Transmitting Sensors Always Mean Better Decision Fusion in Censoring Sensor Networks with an Unknown Size?

This paper examines the impact of sensor censoring on the decision fusion performance in networks with an unknown number of sensors. In performing the decision fusion process, the fusion center applies the Chair-Varshney test;suitably modified to take account of the unknown network size. A closed-form analytical expression is derived for the error probability of the modified fusion rule. It is shown that reducing the censoring probability, i.e., allowing a greater number of sensors to transmit their decisions, does not necessarily improve the decision fusion performance. Rather, there exists a certain censoring probability threshold below which increasing the number of transmitting sensors simply incurs a greater intra-network communication overhead but without improving the global decision performance. Our findings establish that the design of energy-efficient local detection rules should commence with the censoring rate threshold. Hence, it is desirable that the value of this censoring probability threshold be known in advance. Accordingly, the present study proposes an efficient method for identifying the censoring probability threshold value and determining the corresponding local censoring rule.

Cooperative detection of areas of rapid change in spatial fields

This paper proposes a distributed coordination algorithm for robotic sensor networks to detect boundaries that separate areas of rapid change of planar spatial phenomena. We consider an aggregate objective function, termed wombliness, to measure the change of the spatial field along the closed polygonal curve defined by the location of the sensors. We encode the network task as the optimization of the wombliness and characterize the smoothness properties of the objective function. In general, the complexity of the spatial phenomena may make the gradient flow cause self-intersections in the polygonal curve described by the network. We design the hybrid wombling algorithm that allows for network splitting and merging and guarantees local convergence to the critical configurations of the wombliness, while monotonically optimizing it. The technical approach combines ideas from statistical estimation, dynamical systems, and hybrid modeling and design. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Error Probability Bounds for Balanced Binary Relay Trees

We study the detection error probability associated with a balanced binary relay tree, where the leaves of the tree correspond to N identical and independent sensors. The root of the tree represents a fusion center that makes the overall detection decision. Each of the other nodes in the tree is a relay node that combines two binary messages to form a single output binary message. Only the leaves are sensors. In this way, the information from the sensors is aggregated into the fusion center via the relay nodes. In this context, we describe the evolution of the Type I and Type II error probabilities of the binary data as it propagates from the leaves toward the root. Tight upper and lower bounds for the total error probability at the fusion center as functions of N are derived. These characterize how fast the total error probability converges to 0 with respect to N, even if the individual sensors have error probabilities that converge to 1/2.

This work presents a distributed method for control centers to monitor the operating condition of a power network, i.e., to estimate the network state, and to ultimately determine the occurrence of threatening situations. State estimation has been recognized to be a fundamental task for network control centers to operate safely and reliably a power grid. We consider (static) state estimation problems, in which the state vector consists of the voltage magnitude and angle at all network buses. We consider the state to be linearly related to network measurements, which include power flows, current injections, and voltage phasors at some buses. We admit the presence of several cooperating control centers, and we design two distributed methods for them to compute the minimum variance estimate of the state, given the network measurements. The two distributed methods rely on different modes of cooperation among control centers: in the first method an incremental mode of cooperation is used, whereas, in the second method, a diffusive interaction is implemented. Our procedures, which require each control center to know only the measurements and the structure of a subpart of the whole network, are computationally efficient and scalable with respect to the network dimension, provided that the number of control centers also increases with the network cardinality. Additionally, a finite-memory approximation of our diffusive algorithm is proposed, and its accuracy is characterized. Finally, our estimation methods are exploited to develop a distributed algorithm to detect corrupted network measurements. Published by Elsevier Ltd

In this paper, we study the problem of distributed hypothesis testing in cooperative networks of agents. All agents are trying to reach consensus on the state of nature by their private signals and the binary actions of their neighbors. This is a challenging problem because the exchanged information of the agents is highly compressed. We propose a gossip-type method where every agent's decision converges in probability to the optimal decision held by a fictitious fusion center. We prove the asymptotical property of the proposed method and provide simulation results that demonstrate the communication cost and convergence time of the method.
