This paper propose a new method for detecting distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. By using the monitors on the edge network to record the traffic information in a Sketch matrix, we can get the suspicious attack traffic information as the local detection result. Then, all the monitors that have found suspicious information about the same destination IP organize into an AutoTree to collaborative aggregate the local detection result. The local detection information will be aggregated in the AutoTree step by step, while the root of the AutoTree will be in charge of the final decision for the target confirmation. In order to verify the proposed method, we do the experiments in a simulated network. We compare the detection time, detection rate between three detection methods: Collaborative distributed detection (CDD), Routing Distribution Based detection (RDBD) and Single Point detection (SPD).

The wormhole attack is a severe attack in Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). It involves two or more wormhole endpoints colluding to capture traffic from one place in the network and replay it to another faraway place through a secret tunnel, so as to distort network routing. It may lead to even more serious threats such as packet dropping and denial of service (DoS). Although a lot of works have been done on detecting wormhole attacks, few of them actually evaluated their solutions on a testbed to consider the real network conditions. In this paper, we set up a WMN testbed for studying wormhole attacks to fill this gap. Some existing approaches used RTT to detect wormhole attacks. However, from both theoretical analysis and experimental results, we observed that the standard deviation of round trip time (stdev(RTT)) is a more efficient metric than RTT to identify wormhole attacks. Accordingly, we propose a new algorithm called Neighbor-Probe-Acknowledge (NPA) to detect wormhole attacks. Compared with existing works, NPA does not need time synchronization or extra hardware support. Moreover, it achieves higher detection rate and lower false alarm rate than the methods using RTT under different background traffic load conditions.

We present two recently developed new methods for fast and distributed strain/temperature sensing in optical fibers, based on Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA). Both methods make use of very fast (<1ns) and controlled tuning of the optical frequency of a light wave. In the Fast BOTDA (F-BOTDA) method the complete Brillouin gain spectrum is scanned, while in the Slope-Assisted technique (SA-BOTDA) only a single frequency point on the slope of the Brillouin gain spectrum is probed. A sensing speed of a few hundred Hz is experimentally demonstrated, limited only by the fiber length and the need for averaging.

In this paper, the application of hierarchical wireless sensor networks in water quality monitoring is investigated. Adopting a hierarchical structure, the set of sensors is divided into multiple clusters where the value of the sensing parameter is almost constant in each cluster. The members of each cluster transmit their sensing information to the local fusion center (LFC) of their corresponding cluster, where using some fusion rule, the received information is combined, and then possibly sent to a higher-level central fusion center (CFC). A two-phase processing scheme is also envisioned, in which the first phase is dedicated to detection in the LFC, and the second phase is dedicated to estimation in both the LFC and the CFC. The focus of the present paper is on the problem of decision fusion at the LFC: we propose hard-and soft-decision maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithms, which exhibit flexibility in minimizing the total cost imposed by incorrect detections in the first phase. The proposed algorithms are simulated and compared with conventional fusion techniques. It is shown that the proposed techniques result in lower cost. Furthermore, when the number of sensors or the amount of contamination increases, the performance gap between the proposed algorithms and the existing methods also widens.

Ensemble methods for anomaly detection and distributed intrusion detection in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

This paper examines the problem of distributed intrusion detection in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs), utilizing ensemble methods. A three-level hierarchical system for data collection, processing and transmission is described. Local IDSs (intrusion detection systems) are attached to each node of the MANET, collecting raw data of network operation, and computing a local anomaly index measuring the mismatch between the current node operation and a baseline of normal operation. Anomaly indexes from nodes belonging to a cluster are periodically transmitted to a cluster head, which averages the node indexes producing a cluster-level anomaly index. Cluster heads periodically transmit these cluster-level anomaly indexes to a manager which averages them. On the theoretical side, we show that averaging improves detection rates under very mild conditions concerning the distributions of the anomaly indexes of the normal class and the anomalous class. On the practical side, the paper describes clustering algorithms to update cluster centers and machine learning algorithms for computing the local anomaly indexes. The complete suite of algorithms was implemented and tested, under two types of MANET routing protocols and two types of attacks against the routing infrastructure. Performance evaluation was effected by determining the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves and the corresponding area under the ROC curve (AUC) metrics for various operational conditions. The overall results confirm the theoretical developments related with the benefits of averaging with detection accuracy improving as we move up in the node-cluster-manager hierarchy. We study the detection performance of M-ary relay trees, where only the leaves of the tree represent sensors making measurements. The root of the tree represents the fusion center which makes an overall detection decision. Each of the other nodes is a relay node which aggregates M messages sent by its child nodes into a new compressed message and sends the message to its parent node. Building on previous work on the detection performance of M-ary relay trees with binary messages, in this paper we study the case of non-binary relay message alphabets. We characterize the exponent of the error probability with respect to the message alphabet size D, showing how the detection performance increases with D. Our method involves reducing a tree with non-binary relay messages into an equivalent higher-degree tree with only binary messages.

In this paper, we consider a distributed detection problem in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) using ultrawide bandwidth (UWB) communications. Due to the severe restrictions on power consumption, energy efficiency becomes a critical design issue in WSNs. UWB technology has low-power transceivers, low-complexity and low-cost circuitry which are well suited to the physical layer requirements for WSNs. In a typical parallel fusion network, local decisions are made by local sensors and transmitted through a wireless channel to a fusion center, where the final decision is made. In this paper, we control the number of UWB pulses to achieve the energy efficient distributed detection. We first theoretically characterize the performance of distributed detection using UWB communications. Based on the analysis, we then obtain the minimum number of the pulses per detection to meet the required performance. To achieve a near-optimal design, we further propose a multiple access technique based on the random number of UWB pulses. Finally, the performance evaluation is provided to demonstrate the advantage of our design.

Statistical inference is a mature research area, but distributed inference problems that arise in the context of modern wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have new and unique features that have revitalized research in this area in recent years. The goal of this paper is to introduce the readers to these novel features and to summarize recent research developments in this area. In particular, results on distributed detection, parameter estimation and tracking in WSNs will be discussed, with a special emphasis on solutions to these inference problems that take into account the communication network connecting the sensors and the resource constraints at the sensors.

distributed detection in a one-dimensional (1-D) sensor network with correlated sensor observations, as exemplified by two problems-detection of a deterministic signal in correlated Gaussian noise and detection of a first-order autoregressive [AR(1)] signal in independent Gaussian noise, is studied in this paper. In contrast with the traditional approach where a bank of dedicated parallel access channels (PAC) is used for transmitting the sensor observations to the fusion center, we explore the possibility of employing a shared multiple access channel (MAC), which significantly reduces the bandwidth requirement or detection delay. We assume that local observations are mapped according to a certain function subject to a power constraint. Using the large deviation approach, we demonstrate that for the deterministic signal in correlated noise problem, with a specially chosen mapping rule, MAC fusion achieves the same asymptotic performance as centralized detection under the average power constraint (APC), while there is always a loss in error exponents associated with PAC fusion. Under the total power constraint (TPC), MAC fusion still results in exponential decay in error exponents with the number of sensors, while PAC fusion does not. For the AR signal problem, we propose a suboptimal MAC mapping rule which performs closely to centralized detection for weakly correlated signals at almost all signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values, and for heavily correlated signals when SNR is either high or low. Finally, we show that although the lack of MAC synchronization always causes a degradation in error exponents, such degradation is negligible when the phase mismatch among sensors is sufficiently small.

A Modular, Close-Meshed Traffic and Environmental Data Acquisition Network as a Basis for Information Services

An overall knowledge of the current traffic state is a prerequisite for a functioning traffic management both in private and public transport. Today, the acquisition of traffic data is performed mostly by stationary systems. Typically, induction loops, radar detectors, laser scanners, passive infrared detectors and also image processing systems are used for this purpose. Supplementary, floating cars, which act as mobile traffic sensors, transfer their traffic data speed and position. In Germany, stationary induction loops at traffic lights are the common devices for the acquisition of traffic data, though the underlying purpose of these systems is to enable a traffic actuated control of traffic lights. Because such measuring points are rather rare compared to a whole inner-city road network, complex models are applied in order to conclude the entire traffic state from the limited amount of data measured. Furthermore, coping with climate changes and protecting the environment plays a more and more significant role. New environmental laws and guidelines in Europe force politics and economy to act which requires e.g. innovative concepts for traffic management. Target-oriented information can save lives, protect infrastructures, increase safety and save energy. In order to gain this information, a modular, close-meshed data acquisition network is necessary for the cost-efficient capture of traffic and environmental data.
